Delhi-Mumbai Expressway gets driver-friendly touch: 'Wayside amenities' stations ensure safety, comfort for long-haul truckers
Dausa (Rajasthan) [India], June 26 (ANI): The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, counted among the most ambitious and eco-sensitive infrastructure projects by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, is steadily becoming a model for world-class and commuter-friendly expressways.
Recognising the essential contribution and challenges faced by long-distance truck drivers, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a unique and much-needed initiative, driver-centric Wayside Amenity Stations.
So far, nearly 21 such stations have been built on the expressway, with four already operational. These stations aim to provide not just rest, but a sense of comfort and security to drivers who clock 12 to 14 hours daily, often navigating the highways through the night.
One such operational facility near Dausa in Rajasthan, developed by NHAI and managed by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), has been aptly named 'Apna Ghar'. True to its name, the station offers a home-like environment to drivers with amenities such as truck parking, CCTV-monitored premises, clean restrooms, bathing areas, self-cooking kitchens, a Dhaba, and free Wi-Fi, all available for just Rs 112 (including GST).
On asked how these facilities are being booked and managed, Radha Mohan, Business Manager at IOCL, told ANI, ' Earlier we had 'Swagat' outlets on highways that offered basic facilities like restrooms and food. Now, we have upgraded versions of those. We're offering air conditioning, water coolers, washing machines, clean open bathing areas, clean restrooms, TVs, free Wi-Fi, and CCTV surveillance across the parking area with live monitoring at our station.'
'If a driver doesn't want to cook, we also offer affordable meals. For under Rs 130, a complete meal is available at our dhaba. Any truck driver can come here and rest. We know that they travel long distances and suffer fatigue, which increases the risk of accidents. So the concept was to provide such facilities on highways where they can rest and refresh themselves safely.'
On booking facilities, Radha Mohan added: 'Currently, we have 35 beds available here and the charges are Rs 112 including GST. Drivers can make bookings using the 'Apna Ghar' app. If someone is unaware of the app, our petrol pump staff are trained to assist. Our managers stationed here also help drivers with the booking process. Once the app is downloaded and used, drivers have no issues making future bookings. On average, about 50-60 per cent of the beds are booked daily, meaning that a significant number of drivers are already using this facility every day.'
In addition to essential facilities, these wayside amenity stations are also equipped with a range of convenient services to enhance the overall travel experience. These include fuel pumps for quick refuelling, restaurants and dhabas offering wholesome thalis and quick snacks, and EV charging stations to support electric vehicles. There are dedicated parking bays for buses and trucks, motels for longer stays, and play areas for children.
By integrating such comprehensive services under one roof, NHAI's initiative marks a significant step toward safer highways, reduced fatigue-related accidents, and enhanced dignity for India's unsung highway warriors, the truck drivers. (ANI)

After Op Sindoor Success, Indian Drone Startup Raises Massive $100 Million
New Delhi: UAV manufacturing startup Raphe mPhibr, whose drones participated in Operation Sindoor, has raised $100 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst. The Noida-based startup has so far raised $145 million (over Rs 1,200 crore) in the biggest ever fundraise by an Indian aerospace manufacturing firm. Raphe mPhibr Chief Executive Vivek Mishra told NDTV the key to beating China in drone technology and market is to build "a very strong ecosystem for design, development, and manufacturing." Giving an example from his own startup's experience, Mr Mishra said they needed an internal combustion engine for one of their long-endurance drones, but they could not find an ideal one, so they ended up building one that perfectly matched their needs. "For one of our long-endurance drones, we needed an internal combustion engine. Anything existing in the market would be either too expensive or too heavy or would not meet performance [parameters]. So we decided that we would design and manufacture the internal combustion engine here," Mr Mishra said. "And we were able to do it. This was India's first design of an internal combustion engine. The goal was not to recreate anything, but to reduce size, weight, increase performance, and attune it to the requirement for the UAV and hence the user," Mr Mishra said, referring to unmanned aerial vehicles. He added that a lot of companies in India can focus on research and manufacturing. "We can then come up with unique products for the unique requirements of India." Raphe mPhibr proved its mettle during Operation Sindoor, when India launched strikes against Pakistan in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists. Their drones fired missiles at Pakistani targets. Since then there has been a huge surge in the Indian military's interest in acquiring more of these systems from domestic firms. The Indian Army, for instance, just ordered 450 suicide drones from a competitor and is all set to order hundreds more from the Noida-based startup. With enough resources, Raphe mPhibr is expected to innovate and deliver more capable drones to the military. "This was our Series B round where we raised $100 million, led by General Catalyst. A lot of our existing investors like Amal Parekh and Think Investment also pitched in this round as well. We$100 started almost a decade ago and this was a major [funding] round that we did to support the increase in capacity for our research and manufacturing," Mr Mishra told NDTV. On the huge interest in Raphe mPhibr's products following Operation Sindoor, Mr Mishra said their vision from Day 1 of operations was to develop a strong research and manufacturing capability in India. "We have been silently working for around a decade to develop the capacity where we are able to not only do research on the system level, but also do research and manufacturing on a subsystem level, where in each and every part of the drone, be it the structures, be it composites, be it electronics, wire harnesses, or even software - are designed and manufactured here," Mr Mishra said. "We have a unique manufacturing capability where state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques along with research are under one roof. For us, it's the same old vision. The value has increased wherein we are raising a larger amount compared to the last round, but this is towards the same vision that we have to be able to do more deep research into every field and focus on manufacturing and indigenous capabilities," the Raphe mPhibr CEO said. He expressed optimism that Indian engineers who leave the country to look for opportunities abroad would return in large numbers to work in the exciting field of drone tech. He said they have been seeing a trend where hundreds of scientists who have been working in the US for up to 15 years and even young scientists showing excitement in getting opportunities to work in drone tech and related fields in India. "The primary thing is that if you give people the kind of work that becomes an enjoyment, especially for engineers and scientists, they would definitely want to come. We are seeing this. A lot of Indians who have returned from the US and Europe are working with us. And not only Indians, we are proud to welcome other people as well who want to contribute in this sector," Mr Mishra said.

Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee visits Lord Jagannath temple in Digha
Digha (West Bengal) [India], June 26 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Lord Jagannath temple in Digha in West Bengal on Thursday, ahead of Jagannath Rath Yatra scheduled to start on June 27. CM Mamata Banerjee said, 'Lord Jagannath temple has become a major place of pilgrimage. The Rath Yatra will be held on a 1 km route from 9 am to 4 pm tomorrow. The aarti will be performed at 2.30 pm. Our ministerial team has arrived here for this.' The Rs 250 crore temple in Digha, constructed over 20 acres, was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on April 30, 2025. The temple, inspired by the 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, houses the same deities. Meanwhile, the temple town of Odisha's Puri is all set to witness the Jagannath Rath Yatra, 2025. During the festival, devotees draw the grand chariots of the three deities--Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister goddess Subhadra--to Gundicha Temple, where the deities reside for a week and then return to the Jagannath temple. On Wednesday, June 11, Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, held the sacred bathing ritual on the occasion of Snana Purnima in Puri. The three deities were ceremonially bathed with 108 pitchers of sacred water. This ritual marks a significant lead-up to the grand Rath Yatra. The Ratha Yatra, also known as the Chariot Celebration of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra, is one of the most prominent Hindu festivals in Puri, Odisha.
