The IIHF just dropped the hammer on Russia again and this time, it's Olympic-sized. Just when it seemed like global hockey might inch toward normalcy, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) reminded us that the political ice is still far from smooth.
Russia and Belarus have officially been ruled ineligible for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. That means no Team Russia, no red-and-white uniforms on Olympic ice, and no shot at gold for the league's top Russian stars.
The news doesn't pull NHLers from their teams, but it massively impacts the league's global optics, especially with names like Ovechkin, Kaprizov, and Vasilevskiy left off the Olympic radar.
And yep, hockey fans, it's a big deal.
Russia banned from 2026 Olympic hockey, but
NHL
season goes on: The big impact on international ice hockey
The IIHF announced the extended ban during its annual congress in Stockholm, citing ongoing safety and geopolitical concerns stemming from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Though the original suspension only ran through summer 2025, the federation made it clear that Russia and Belarus won't be allowed at IIHF-sanctioned events through the 2025–26 season, including the Milan Games.

Technically, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) could override the IIHF and let Russian athletes compete under a neutral flag like they did in PyeongChang 2018. But so far, the IIHF's stance is firm: if they run the tournament, Russia's not in.
NHL stars
can still play but the Olympic stage is now off-limits
Russian NHL players are still fully eligible to play for their teams. Over 50 Russians were active in the NHL last season, and they'll keep chasing Stanley Cups like normal.
But when it comes to the Olympics, the ultimate international spotlight, they're sidelined.
That stings for both players and fans. Remember Sochi 2014, when Alex Ovechkin was skating for glory on home ice? The dream of a similar moment in 2026 is dead for now. Young stars like Kirill Kaprizov and Andrei Svechnikov will have to watch the Milan Games from the couch unless, of course, the IOC makes a surprise call.

Baba Vanga warned us! Alien UFO sighting could disrupt a major 2025 sports event live on TV

Baba Vanga's 2025 UFO prediction As we move past the halfway mark of 2025, a decades-old prophecy by Bulgarian mystic Baba Vanga has reentered global discourse. Known for her extraordinary foresight—having reportedly predicted major events such as the 9/11 terror attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic—Vanga's predictions continue to fuel intrigue and debate long after her death in 1996. One particular forecast, said to be intended for this very year, has captivated the imaginations of believers and skeptics alike. According to followers and reports from the Daily Mail, Baba Vanga predicted a "new light in the sky" would appear during a globally viewed sports event in 2025. This strange occurrence, she hinted, would not only surprise the world but also mark the beginning of humanity's first contact with extraterrestrial life. Baba Vanga's UFO prediction: Alien contact at a sports event The claim that a bright light will appear in the sky during a globally watched sports event is one of the more cryptic predictions attributed to Baba Vanga. According to interpretations documented by her followers and reported in the Daily Mail, the prophecy describes this light as neither destructive nor fearsome. Instead, it is said to bring answers—possibly suggesting a peaceful encounter with non-human intelligence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo While Vanga did not specify the name, location, or type of the sporting event in question, the ambiguity has only intensified public curiosity. Some followers have associated the forecast with contact from an alien civilization, while others propose symbolic or astronomical meanings. Will Baba Vanga's UFO prediction hit Wimbledon, F1, or the World Series? Because Vanga did not specify which sporting event would coincide with the mysterious light, speculation has ranged widely. The Super Bowl, which occurred in February 2025, was initially thought to be the likely candidate due to its global viewership. However, no UFO sightings or unexplained lights were reported during or around the event. Still, the year offers several other major global sporting events that could fulfill the conditions of the prediction: Wimbledon Tennis Championships – July 2025 World Series (Baseball) – October 2025 Formula 1 Championship Final – December 2025 Any of these could potentially be the setting for the mysterious "light in the sky" Vanga mentioned. Believers are now turning their attention to these upcoming events in hopes of witnessing something extraordinary. UFOs are real? Baba Vanga's prediction aligns with US military sightings In recent years, the discourse around UFOs has shifted from fringe speculation to serious investigation. Under the Trump administration, the US government declassified several documents detailing interactions between military forces and unidentified flying objects. These disclosures included credible sightings, radar data, and pilot testimonies. The Daily Mail reported that over 100 US Customs and Border Protection agents claimed to have seen unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs). One such case involved a military fighter jet allegedly colliding with a UFO over the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range in 2023. These revelations have led many to believe that if Baba Vanga's prediction does come true, it may not be a standalone incident but part of a broader pattern of increasing extraterrestrial visibility. South American scientists claim alien DNA: Is this the light Baba Vanga saw? In parallel, South American scientists have been at the center of otherworldly headlines. Researchers in Peru have claimed to possess mummified alien bodies and mysterious objects resembling probes. Some of these specimens reportedly have DNA that does not match any known Earth species, according to preliminary analyses. In Colombia, a UFO was allegedly spotted flying in a zigzag pattern over the town of Buga. Witnesses described its movement as unlike any conventional aircraft. The object was reportedly recovered and studied by scientists, who revealed it contained three layers of metal-like material and 18 microspheres embedded around a central 'chip.' Dr. Jose Luis Velazquez, a radiologist who examined one such object, confirmed it had no welds or visible joints—an anomaly that challenges the theory of man-made construction. Could the 'light' be astronomical or symbolic Not everyone believes the prophecy implies extraterrestrial contact. Alternative theories suggest the 'light in the sky' could refer to natural celestial events. Among the leading candidates: Meteor Showers – Known to produce dramatic sky displays visible across large regions. Aurora Borealis – Increased solar activity could cause unusually vivid Northern Lights. T Coronae Borealis Supernova – Expected to be visible from Earth in 2025, this binary star system, located 3,000 light-years away, is due for a spectacular eruption. The latter theory is particularly compelling. The supernova would shine so brightly that it could be seen with the naked eye, potentially fulfilling the prophecy in a scientifically plausible way. All eyes on the sky: Will Baba Vanga's 2025 UFO prediction finally come true? The fascination with Baba Vanga's 2025 prophecy continues to grow, amplified by social media buzz and a broader shift in public interest toward UFOs and extraterrestrial theories. The combination of vague prophecy, modern-day scientific phenomena, and government disclosures has created a perfect storm of mystery and speculation. While some cling to skepticism, others argue that a prediction of such specificity—"a new light in the sky" during a major sporting event—cannot be easily dismissed, especially as similar celestial or aerial anomalies have already been reported in recent years. With several major global sports events yet to occur and cosmic phenomena expected in the sky, many eyes remain fixed on the heavens, waiting to see if Baba Vanga's mysterious forecast finally comes to light.

India tour of England: Shubman Gill's new-era team ready for England test; Pujara and Nehra reveal key to success

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal Former Indian cricketers offered advice to the Shubman Gill-led Indian cricket team for their upcoming five-Test series in England, with Michael Vaughan suggesting this tour could mark "something special" for the visitors. The guidance comes as India undergoes a transition phase following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin, while Mohammed Shami was not selected for the touring squad. Cheteshwar Pujara emphasized the importance of adapting to English conditions for success. "India's team to England must adapt quickly and play (according) to the conditions. As someone who understands batting in English conditions and team dynamics, I believe discipline, patience and support for each other are crucial. Every player will need to contribute and respect the challenges that lay ahead. I am sure this tour will be a great opportunity for the growth and success of each player and the team as a whole," Pujara told Sony Sports, the official broadcaster. "India's new squad faces a tough challenge in England, but as an all-rounder, I know adaptability is key. Gill's leadership, Pant's energy, and India's young talent must step up. England's conditions test every skill — swing, seam, and temperament. If India's players adapt quickly and stay united, they can surprise England, just as we've seen in the past with new teams rising to the occasion." Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Michael Vaughan, former England captain, spoke about India's decision to appoint 25-year-old Gill as Test captain. "Well, it's official — Shubman Gill is the new face of Indian Test cricket, stepping up as captain for the England series. It's a bold move, trusting a young leader with a new-look team after the retirements of giants like Rohit and Kohli. Gill has got plenty to prove, especially away from home, but he has shown (that) he has got the temperament for big moments. With Rishabh Pant as his deputy and a squad hungry to make their mark, this England tour could be the start of something special for India's next generation. Don't be surprised if these youngsters rise to the occasion."

IND vs ENG: 'Don't be surprised if ... ' - Ex-England captain makes big statement on Shubman Gill after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli retirements

Shubman Gill (AFP Photo) NEW DELHI: Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that naming 25-year-old Shubman Gill as India's new Test captain is a 'bold move' following the sudden retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from red-ball cricket. Gill will lead India in their first assignment of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle — a five-match series against England beginning June 20 in Leeds. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain. With Rohit and Kohli stepping away from the longest format, the responsibility of anchoring India's batting line-up now falls on the shoulders of Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal , KL Rahul, and Pant.
