March Madness 2025: Bettors are backing No. 13 High Point to pull an upset over No. 4 Purdue in the first round

High Point is bettors' preferred upset pick of the first round of the men's NCAA tournament.
The No. 13 Panthers play No. 4 Purdue on Thursday afternoon in the first game of the Midwest region. High Point opened as a 9.5-point underdog to the Boilermakers at BetMGM and that number has already come down to 7.5 points as of Wednesday afternoon.
That's because High Point is getting the most bets and money against the spread of any team in the NCAA tournament so far. Over 80% of bets and 88% of the handle bet on the game is on High Point to cover.

High Point is +280 to win the game outright and is also getting the most moneyline action of any team. The total of 153.5 — down two points from an opening total of 155.5 — is also the most-bet total of any game.
The Panthers went 29-5 in the regular season and won both the regular season and Big South conference tournament titles. The team ranks 19th in the country with over 82 points per game and is led by a rotation that features five seniors and a junior among the team's top seven scorers. Kezza Giffa leads the team with 14.8 points per game.
Purdue is led by star guard Braden Smith and is hoping to avoid a second first-round upset in three seasons. The Boilermakers became just the second No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 in 2023 when they fell to Fairleigh Dickinson. A season ago, Purdue bounced back and went to the national title game before losing to back-to-back national champion UConn.
The only game getting more action at BetMGM than High Point and Purdue is Michigan's matchup against UC San Diego. And bettors are split on that one. UCSD is getting the second-most moneyline bets at +125, but Michigan is getting the second-most bets against the spread. The Wolverines are 2.5-point favorites as a No. 5 seed after beating Wisconsin for the Big Ten tournament title on Sunday.

Rams troll Jim Harbaugh on social media, 'sign-ing off' after preseason win over Chargers

The past week wasn't a good one for Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Rams rubbed it in with a trolling social media post. The Los Angeles Chargers coach had his reputation and integrity, along with Michigan's 2024 national championship, stained by being named in the NCAA Committee on Infractions report that penalized the football program for an advance scouting scheme in which assistant Connor Stallions recorded play signals from the sidelines of upcoming opponents. Then the Chargers lost a preseason game to the Rams on Saturday, 23-22, with five seconds remaining when Stetson Bennett threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tru Edwards. The team also lost receiver Quentin Johnston to a concussion during the game.) [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Following the game, the Rams' social media team posted a graphic that made at least two references to the sign-stealing scandal that occurred under Harbaugh's watch at Michigan. The post on X said "Sign-ing off" with an image of the Rams' mascot holding up a sign that read "Hail to the Victors." Ouch. Those Rams horns aren't just hard, but also sharp. As part of the sanctions levied against the Michigan program by the NCAA, Harbaugh was issued a 10-year show-cause penalty — on top of a four-year punishment he received in 2024 — which effectively ends any possibility of him returning to coach college football with a virtual ban that lasts until 2038. From Yahoo Sports' Nick Bromberg: "Overall, the show-cause penalties mean that any school that looks to hire Harbaugh over the next 13 years must go in front of the NCAA and justify how his hiring won't lead to any other broken NCAA rules and the governing body has the right to stop the hire." Asked about the NCAA penalties after the Chargers' defeat, Harbaugh told reporters, "I'm not engaging." 'Like I said to you last year, I'm not engaging,' he said. Harbaugh left Michigan after the 2023-24 season and the Wolverines' national championship to take the head coaching position with the Chargers. He reportedly agreed to a five-year contract paying him an annual salary of $16 million. In his first season with the Chargers, Harbaugh went 11-6, turning the team around from a 5-11 record the previous year.

2025 Big Ten football favorite is not clear or unanimous

The Big Ten has in recent years been the best conference in college football. Ohio State enters this season with loads of NFL talent including safety Caleb Downs and arguably the best player in college football, receiver Jeremiah Smith. The drawback with Ohio State is the uncertainty at the quarterback position; the USC Trojans might have them beat in that category. Penn State enters this season with a fierce defense, a dominant run game, and a top quarterback in college football with Drew Allar. Penn State has the more well-rounded team, but Ohio State's talent and coach Ryan Day make the Buckeyes a tough matchup for any team they could face. With Ohio State coming off a national championship victory and Penn State being more improved, the Big Ten football season is extremely hard to predict for experts. Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports analyzes the uncertainty surrounding who will be the Big Ten champion in a recent feature. "One notable swap from the Coaches Poll finds a change atop the Big Ten. Coaches went with Ohio State, the defending national champions, at No. 2 behind the Longhorns; the media went with Penn State, believing in the Nittany Lions' clearer situation on offense and greater degree of carryover from last season. The Nittany Lions received 23 first-place votes in the AP poll - just two behind Texas. Another advantage for PSU is the addition of former OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. Clearly, coaches and the media believe both teams are good enough to win the Big Ten and deliver the league's third national championship in a row." Both teams have what it takes to win the Big Ten crown. It is easy to assume that both teams will make the College Football Playoff. With the Trojans' luck, they do not have to face either team. Uncertainty at the top of the Big Ten could bode well for the Trojans; they are coming into this season with a lot of doubts about how successful they will be. If the Trojans can take care of business in conference play and beat rival Oregon -- their toughest Big Ten matchup on the schedule -- they could earn a bid to face one of the Big Ten juggernauts in the Big Ten title game. USC could also solidify itself as a playoff team. There is no doubt the USC Trojans have a lot of talent on the roster this season, but there is just as much uncertainty regarding where they finish.
