Montreal buses change 'Go! Canadiens Go!' signage to French after complaints to language watchdog
MONTREAL (AP) — City buses in Montreal have dropped the expression 'Go! Canadiens Go!' following a complaint to Quebec's language watchdog.
Montreal's transit agency is now using the French expression 'Allez! Canadiens Allez!' on the electronic displays on the front of its buses to show support for the Montreal Canadiens' NHL playoff run. The decision was made because the word 'go' is an anglicism, said spokesperson Isabelle Tremblay.
The expression 'Go Habs Go!' is used extensively in Quebec to support the Montreal hockey team. It is also used widely by the team itself, including on social media. The hashtag #GoHabsGo appears in oversized letters outside the Bell Centre in Montreal, the home arena of the Canadiens.
Tremblay said Quebec's French-language office received a complaint last year about buses displaying the words 'Go! CF Mtl Go!' — a reference to Montreal's professional soccer club. In response, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) decided to change the word 'go' with 'allez' — the French equivalent — on all of its messaging.
Tremblay said it 'maintains team spirit' while complying with Quebec's recent overhaul of its French language charter.
The agency has been gradually changing the language on its fleet of buses since the end of last summer. Tremblay said the modification must be made manually on each bus, so the work was only completed earlier this year. The change was first reported Thursday by the Montreal Gazette.
A spokesperson for the Montreal Canadiens declined to comment on the matter. The team clinched a playoff spot last week, and trails 2-0 in the best-of-seven matchup against the Washington Capitals. The Canadiens host Game 3 of their first-round series on Friday.
In Quebec City on Thursday, the move was widely panned by opposition parties, including the Parti Québécois, which positions itself as a champion of the French language.
'We have other priorities for the French language in Quebec,' said PQ legislature member Catherine Gentilcore, adding that leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon will continue to use #GoHabsGo on the X platform.
The Quebec Community Groups Network, which represents English-speaking Quebecers, dismissed the decision as 'silliness' in a social media post.
'EVERYONE yells #GoHabsGo! at the Bell Centre,' the group said. 'Our buses should be allowed to do the same.'

Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease that can be diagnosed only by examining the brain after a person dies. Raiders defensive line looks to prove itself after release of Christian Wilkins
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Christian Wilkins' expected impact on the Raiders' defensive line was in question long before he was shockingly released last week, which if nothing else provided clarity on what kind of front Las Vegas can take into the season. Jonah Laulu has showed some promise he could take over Wilkins' spot at tackle next to Adam Butler, who comes off a career season. Maxx Crosby is an elite edge rusher, and Malcolm Koonce on the other side has shown the ability to disrupt opposing passing games. Not that replacing one of the game's top interior linemen will be simple, but the Raiders might be able to absorb such a change reasonably well. 'We're not necessarily the biggest group, but across the board everybody moves really well,' coach Pete Carroll said. 'So we're going to play to that. ... That's a real competitive group, and that's going to take us all camp. It's going to take us through the games and all of that to figure that out. There's no rush. 'But it's a good spot because there's enough guys that have something to show you, so we just got to give them the right opportunities and see if we can draw out the best in them.' Crosby is the group's star, and in practice he has resembled the player who in 2022 and 2023 had 27 sacks and 45 tackles for loss. He played through injury last season in totaling 7 1/2 sacks and 17 tackles for loss over 12 games before finally being shut down to undergo ankle surgery . At the other end, Koonce missed the entire season because of a torn ACL. It was a major setback to a player trying to build on a 2023 season in which had six sacks over the final four games. The Raiders signed him to a one-year, $12 million prove-it contract this season. 'We're counting on Malcolm to be a big factor,' Carroll said. 'He's really athletic and he's really natural player, and he's got good instincts.' Butler and Laulu occupy the two inside spots. The Raiders have a known quantity in Butler, an eight-year veteran coming off back-to-back seasons in which he had five sacks each season. He was especially effective last season, starting a career-high 16 games. Butler didn't start any games in 2023, though he played in all 17. 'You only got one chance to do this,' Butler said. 'I don't get to do my career over again. I changed my attitude, changed my approach to the game, and I just decided that I wasn't going to be just a third down player anymore. I decided that I am a starter. I'm going to prove myself in this league, and anybody that says I'm not, I'm going to do everything in my power to shut them up.' Laulu takes on the burden of being the player expected to step in for Wilkins. The second-year pro played in all 17 games last season, starting seven after Wilkins broke his foot in Week 5. Though Laulu had just three tackles for loss and one sack, he has used the extra snaps in practice this year to make a case for a bigger role, something Carroll said hasn't gone unnoticed. 'Coming in late to training camp, I came here the week before we played Week 1 and was just trying to learn the plays,' Laulu said. 'I was trying to learn our philosophy on the defense, how we operate, and how do we attack offenses. 'Being able to now transition to this year where I'm still under the same coaches on defense and being able to stack on top of last year, I'm very comfortable in the defense, even though we changed some things.' Notes By not holding out, left tackle Kolton Miller doesn't have any catching up to do in training camp after signing a three-year, $66 million extension Wednesday, including $42.5 million guaranteed. 'Each day is an opportunity, and I feel like if you're not in it, you're taking a step back and it's really not helping you,' Miller said. Rangers add veteran right-hander Merrill Kelly in a trade with the Diamondbacks
PHOENIX (AP) — The Texas Rangers acquired right-hander Merrill Kelly from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, adding a veteran starter with postseason experience to fortify their rotation at the trade deadline. The D-backs received three minor league pitchers: left-handers Kohl Drake and Mitch Bratt and right-hander David Hagaman. The 36-year-old Kelly has spent all of his seven major league seasons leagues with the Diamondbacks. He was the only Arizona pitcher to beat the Rangers in the 2023 World Series, throwing seven dominant innings in Game 2. 'We know when he takes the ball, we've seen it firsthand playing against him, and we have heard from so many people what an ultra competitor he is,' Rangers general manager Chris Young said. "So happy he's a Ranger.' Kelly is 9-6 with a 3.22 ERA and 121 strikeouts over 128 2/3 innings this season. The Rangers also beefed up their bullpen, adding right-hander Phil Maton from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers — right-hander Skylar Hales and lefty Mason Molina — and international bonus pool money. The 32-year-old Maton has a 2.35 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 38 1/3 innings. Finally, Texas added left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league left-hander Garrett Horn. The D-backs were sellers at the deadline, sending first baseman Josh Naylor and third baseman Eugenio Suarez to the Mariners in separate deals. Outfielder Randal Grichuk was shipped to the Royals. Arizona also sent pitchers Shelby Miller and Jordan Montgomery to the Brewers for cash. Arizona is 51-58 after entering the season with playoff expectations. General manager Mike Hazen said it was particularly tough to lose Kelly, given his history with the organization. 'There's the collective disappointment in how we've played,' Hazen said. 'We all feel it. The players feel it, I've certainly taken responsibility, shared that with them, how I didn't do a good enough job to keep this team in position to keep going.'
