Govt. open to discussion on new school timings after concerns raised

The Hindua day ago

The government on Wednesday said it was open to discussions if any group faced difficulties following the announcement of new school timings for high schools in the State.
The move comes after Muslim scholar and president of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama Jifri Muthukoya Thangal expressed concern that the revised schedule would affect madrassa education for around 12 lakh students.
Mr. Thangal raised the issue at a function attended by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The Samastha Kerala Jamiyyatthul ul-Ulama, known as Samastha, is an association of Sunni scholars who enjoy the highest support base among Kerala Muslims.
General Education Minister V. Sivankutty, responding to the concerns, said the government was ready to listen and consider changes if needed.
The revised timings, announced earlier in the day, extend the school day by 15 minutes in both the morning and evening sessions, except on Fridays.
Under the new schedule, high school classes will run from 9.15 a.m. to 4.15 p.m.
Talking to a news channel, Mr. Sivankutty said the government was under no compulsion on this matter.
He said this was not framed by the Education department on the basis of a government decision, but followed a court directive and a commission's decision.
'Still, if any section faces difficulties due to the new timings, the government will hold discussions with them and put in place a system that does not cause difficulties to anyone,' Mr. Sivankutty said.

UDF seeks to avoid fallout over Welfare Party support

Kozhikode: Opposition leader V D Satheesan's explanation of Welfare Party's support to UDF—saying its parent group Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) has changed its stance on a theocratic state—did not sit well with Sunnis and other Muslim groups. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now To prevent any backlash, Congress has started efforts to manage the situation. On Thursday, KPCC chief Sunny Joseph met Samastha president Jifri Muthukoya Thangal in Kozhikode. Although they did not discuss Welfare Party's support to UDF, the meeting's timing is politically important. Thangal said Samastha does not back any party and that its members are free to vote as they wish. Meanwhile, Samastha leader Ummer Faizi Mukkam, who is close to CPM, criticized Satheesan, saying he has no right to issue 'fatwas' on Islam. "That is the job of the ulema and we are here for that," he said. He also accused JEI of promoting ideas against Islamic teachings. On a more measured note, AP Sunni faction leader Abdul Hakim Azhari said Sunni groups do not interfere in political alliances or elections but added that its criticism of JEI is based on ideology. "JEI's ideology is built on the idea of a theocratic state. There is no sign they have given it up. Explanations from other political leaders aren't enough," he said. We evaluate secular and democratic values and development policies of each side and inform our members of our position. Raising opinions and criticisms is a sign of political awareness and democratic alertness, helping society develop in many ways. This should continue. Seeing these opinions as political support or opposition shows a misunderstanding of how democratic discussion can work, he said. With LDF increasing criticism of Welfare Party's support for UDF and even groups like Catholic Congress unhappy, UDF is moving cautiously to avoid any impact in Nilambur. Joseph later told the media that Thangal gave advice in good spirit. "We will accept it and move ahead," he said. When asked if his advice was related to Nilambur, Joseph said that topic was not discussed.

The West Bengal Police, in a statement on X, confirmed the coordinated action, saying, 'None of those who have indulged in violence will be spared.' 'The situation is now peaceful and under control. Prohibitory orders under 163 BNSS have been imposed in the Rabindranagar PS area in the interest of peace. The authorities have also appealed for calm and urged citizens to refrain from spreading misinformation on social media. 'Those attempting to incite unrest will be dealt with strictly, in accordance with the law,' the police said. Earlier in the day, police stopped state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar from going to Maheshtala. Majumdar then went to Kalighat to protest outside Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence along with supporters. He was detained, and later released. Sweety Kumari Police on Thursday said they have seized explosives in Budge Budge area, near Rabindranagar where clashes took place a day ago. Police said they arrested five people while they were carrying materials used in bomb-making and are investigating whether it was linked to the clash. Superintendent of Police (Diamond Harbour) Rahul Goswami said: 'Around 8:45 pm yesterday (Wednesday), acting on intelligence inputs, the police intercepted three bikes and recovered a large cache of explosive materials. These included substantial quantities of sodium powder, over 10 kg of aluminium powder, phosphorus dust, red sulphur, and iron dust — all used in making crude bombs.' 'Five arrests have been made in connection with the seizure', the SP said, adding one of them — Nabin Chandra Roy — has admitted, during the questioning, that he is an active RSS and BJP worker. 'On the day of Ram Navami, he was seen at the Bata More, where a verbal altercation occurred over the rally route and barricades. We have video footage where he could be seen throwing police barricades,' the SP said.
