MR DIY quarterly revenue hits RM1.2bil

The Star2 days ago
PETALING JAYA: MR DIY Group (M) Bhd – now with over 1,500 stores countrywide – expects no material impact on its business operations despite ongoing market volatility stemming from geopolitical tensions, tariff adjustments and changes to domestic policies, including the revised sales and service tax and the 2% Employees Provident Fund contribution for foreign workers.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the homegrown retailer said it will continue to expand its retail footprint in 2025 by launching new stores across its core and sub-brands.
'The group remains focused on delivering long-term, sustainable value to stakeholders through strategic investments in growth and technology to enhance operational efficiency,' it noted.
In the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q25), MR DIY opened 31 new stores, bringing its total to 1,502 – up 12.1% year-on-year (y-o-y).
Thanks to the expansion, MR DIY saw its topline inch up by 1.5% to RM1.21bil during the quarter from RM1.2bil in 2Q24.
'This growth came off a high base in 2Q24, which had benefited from the Hari Raya festive season,' the group noted.
Net profit for the quarter under review was up 2.2% to RM158.58mil from RM155.21mil in 2Q24, on the back of higher revenue and improved margin.
Gross profit margin climbed 2.2 percentage points to 47.7%, aided by lower average inventory costs following the ringgit's strengthening against the US dollar and Chinese yuan.
Additionally, MR DIY said total transactions during the quarter rose 5% y-o-y to 48.5 million.
But this, it said, was offset by a 3.3% decline in average basket size, mainly due to fewer items per transaction.
Furthermore, administrative and other operating expenses rose 9.7% and 9.9% y-o-y to RM53.4mil and RM309.9mil, respectively, reflecting higher staff costs from the minimum wage revision effective Feb 1, 2025, as well as increased utility costs and asset depreciation in line with store expansion.
For the first half of its financial year 2025 (1H25), MR DIY's revenue rose 5.7% to RM2.47bil from RM2.34bil in the previous corresponding period, also thanks to an expanded store network.
Furthermore, total transactions for the half grew 7% y-o-y to RM96.7mil, partially offset by a 1.2% y-o-y decline in average basket size.
Net profit for 1H25 rose 10.9% to RM332.73mil from RM300.09mil in 1H24, while gross profit margin improved to 47.8% from 45.7% in the previous corresponding period.
Administrative and other operating expenses increased by 13.7% and 10.8% y-o-y, respectively.
On top of that, the group declared a dividend of 1.5 sen per share for 2Q25, totalling RM142.1mil or 89.6% of profit after tax.
This brings total dividends for 1H25 to 2.9 sen per share, up from 2.2 sen in the previous corresponding period.
Shares of MR DIY rose one sen, or 0.63%, to close at RM1.60 yesterday.

Chinese and Asean experts gather to explore the region's digital future

KUALA LUMPUR (Xinhua): South-East Asian nations are poised to accelerate their adoption of new technologies and the digitalization of their societies, Malaysian Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has said. China's significant advantages in artificial intelligence (AI), cross-border systems, and other emerging high-technology fields will enable members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean), including Malaysia, to ensure their efforts reach all levels of society, ensuring inclusive and sustainable development, Gobind said in his remarks at the 2025 China Mobile Southeast Asia Cooperation Conference. "Building a digital future requires deep cooperation with partners such as China. China holds significant advantages in next-generation network deployment, edge intelligence, AI applications, and cross-border digital platforms. Malaysia highly values its cooperation with China in the digital domain, and we welcome further collaboration," he said. For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing said in his remarks that in recent years, digital economy cooperation between China and Asean has entered a new stage of comprehensive depth, with Malaysia and China in particular having signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) to enhance investment and cooperation in the digital economy. "These emphasize the importance of seizing opportunities brought by the digital economy, green development, and AI. This not only brings development benefits to the people of both countries but also sets a new benchmark for regional digital economy development," he said. Meanwhile, China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. Executive Vice President Li Huidi said that AI is now at the forefront of a new wave of technological and industrial transformation, becoming increasingly user-friendly and widely accessible, and emerging as a new driver of social progress. "Southeast Asia is emerging as a global hub for AI, driven by a young population, strong economic growth, and supportive national strategies. Its rapidly improving computing infrastructure is laying a solid foundation for AI development and deployment," he said, adding that China Mobile is willing to work with partners from all sectors through close collaboration. Under the theme "Envisioning Intelligent Ecosystems, Empowering the Digital Future," the conference, organized by China Mobile, brings together leaders from government, the telecommunications industry, and academia to discuss the region's digital landscape. - Xinhua

CPO Futures Close Higher On Stronger Export Data

By Rosemarie Khoo Mohd Sani KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The crude palm oil (CPO) futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives (BMD) ended higher on Friday, buoyed by stronger export performance as outlined by cargo surveyors, said palm oil trader David Ng. According to cargo surveyors, Intertek Testing Services (ITS) and Amspec, exports for the first half of August rose by 16 per cent and 21 per cent, respectively, compared with the same period in July. However, Ng said the expectation of rising output in the coming weeks is weighing down on sentiments. 'We see prices supported at RM4,380 per tonne and resistance at RM4,500 per tonne,' he said to Bernama. Meanwhile, Mumbai-based Sunvin Group commodity research head Anilkumar Bagani noted that Malaysia's strong August palm oil export, along with a resurgence in Chinese demand, has supported palm oil prices today, despite the bearish overnight soybean oil market on the Chicago Board of Trade. At the close, spot-month August 2025 was unchanged at RM4,338 per tonne, September 2025 rose RM67 to RM4,425 per tonne, and October 2025 increased RM69 to RM4,472 per tonne. The November 2025 contract rose by RM75 to RM4,511 per tonne, December 2025 expanded by RM78 to RM4,528 per tonne, and January 2026 climbed RM75 to RM4,526 per tonne. Trading volume slid to 81,890 lots from 88,920 lots on Thursday, while open interest rose to 249,718 contracts from 244,194 contracts previously.

Intel shares rise as report of likely government stake stokes hopes of US aid

FILE PHOTO: A smartphone with a displayed Intel logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken March 6, 2023. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo INTEL shares rose nearly 3% on Friday on hopes of more financial aid for the turnaround of the struggling chipmaker after a report that the U.S. government may buy a stake. The Bloomberg News report followed a meeting between CEO Lip-Bu Tan and President Donald Trump on Monday after Trump demanded the new Intel chief's resignation over his "highly conflicted" ties to Chinese firms. Trump, who called the meeting "very interesting", has taken an unprecedented approach to interventions and deal-making with corporate America. His administration had struck a deal with MP Materials that would make the Department of Defense the largest shareholder of the rare-earth producer. Federal backing could give Intel more time to revive its loss-making foundry business, analysts said, but it still faces a weak product roadmap and trouble attracting customers for new factories. Under the Biden administration, Intel had emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the 2022 CHIPS Act, as former CEO Pat Gelsinger laid out plans to build advanced factories. Tan, however, pared back such ambitions, slowing construction of new plants in Ohio. He plans to build factories based on demand for the services, which analysts have said could put him at odds with Trump's push to shore up American manufacturing. The report said a deal would help build out the Ohio plant, which has faced delays and was expected to be completed by 2030. It could be a "game-changer", said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. But he warned "government support might help shore up confidence, but it doesn't fix the underlying competitiveness gap in advanced nodes." Intel lost its competitive edge years ago to Taiwan's TSMC . It has virtually no presence in the booming AI chips market dominated by Nvidia and is losing market share in PCs and datacenters to AMD. Its latest 18A manufacturing process is facing quality issues, Reuters has reported, as only a small share of chips produced are good enough for customers, while it remains partly dependent on TSMC to make Intel in-house designed chips. "Intel also needs capability; can the US government do anything to help here?" Bernstein analysts said. "Without a solid process roadmap the entire exercise would be economically equivalent to simply setting 10s of billions of dollars on fire." - Reuters
