An investigation into the cause of the incident is currently being conducted by the West Jefferson Police Department and the Ohio State Highway PatrolA woman and a toddler have died after an SUV crashed into a retention pond in Ohio.
On Thursday, June 5, police responded to reports of 'a vehicle submerged' in the water by U.S. Route 40 and Park West Drive in West Jefferson, the West Jefferson Police Department (WJPD) said in a news release shared on Facebook.
Authorities then 'initiated a water rescue' to try and save those trapped inside the car, per the WJPD.
Three adults and two children were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash, according to a press release obtained by PEOPLE from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
The driver, Chineda Valcin, 29, was able to escape the vehicle, and another adult, Medgine Louis, 24, and a 5-year-old child were rescued before the car sank. However, a 27-year-old woman, identified as Kelita Alfred, and a 3-year-old child were pulled from the vehicle and sent to a Columbus hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, the OSHP said.
Per the OSHP, Valcin was driving a 2016 Jeep Cherokee when "she traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking a ditch and coming to rest in a retention pond" around 6:30 p.m. local time.
Footage released by WSYX shows police officers running across a field to rescue the individuals trapped in the vehicle in the pond.
Screams can be heard in the background, while one person shouted, 'I need another life jacket!'
Multiple fire departments, along with A2B Towing and Recovery, also responded to the scene to help with the rescue and assist the individuals recovered, the WJPD said.
The two surviving adults were not injured, while the 5-year-old child suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital for care, according to the OSHP.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers remain with all those affected. Incidents like this impact us all deeply, and we stand together as a community," added Smith.

US agents, protesters clash again in Los Angeles over immigration raids

Federal agents clashed with angry protestors in the Los Angeles area for a second day Saturday, shooting flash-bang grenades into the crowd and shutting part of a freeway amid raids on undocumented migrants, reports said. The standoff took place in the suburb of Paramount, where demonstrators had gathered near a Home Depot that was being used as a staging area by federal immigration officials, the Fox 11 news outlet reported. They were met by federal agents in riot gear and gas masks, who lobbed flash-bang grenades and tear gas at the crowd, according to news reports and social media posts. The immigration raids are part of US President Donald Trump's ongoing crackdown on undocumented immigrants. The Republican was elected to a second term largely on a promise to crack down hard on the entry and presence of undocumented migrants -- who he likened to "monsters" and "animals." Following the latest clashes in Los Angeles, authorities vowed to prosecute offenders and warned of an escalating security presence. "We are making Los Angeles safer. Mayor (Karen) Bass should be thanking us," Tom Homan, President Trump's point man on border security, said on X. "We are going to bring the National Guard in tonight." FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said multiple arrests had been made following Friday's clashes. "You bring chaos, and we'll bring handcuffs. Law and order will prevail," he said on X. On Saturday, amid chants for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to get out, some protestors waved Mexican flags while others set a US flag on fire, the Los Angeles Times said. Cement blocks and overturned shopping carts served as crude roadblocks. A crowd swarmed a US Marshals Service bus exiting a nearby freeway, with authorities later closing on and off ramps to keep protesters from taking over the highway. The tense standoff came a day after masked and armed immigration agents carried out high-profile workplace raids in separate parts of Los Angeles, attracting angry crowds and setting off hours-long standoffs. "An insurrection against the laws and sovereignty of the United States," White House deputy chief of staff and anti-immigration hardliner Stephen Miller said on X, sharing a video of protesters marching Friday outside Los Angeles's federal detention center. Los Angeles, the second-most populous city in the United States, is one of the most diverse metropolises in the country. The suburb of Paramount, home to about 50,000 people, is 82 percent Hispanic or Latino, according to US Census data. acb/aha

Jared Leto accused of ‘sexual impropriety' by multiple women, some who say they were underage

Jared Leto is denying allegations of years-long 'sexual impropriety' brought forth by multiple women, including DJ and music producer Allie Teilz, who recently resurfaced her more than decade-old claims against the actor. In an Air Mail exposé published on Saturday, nine accusers shared their stories of Leto's alleged misconduct with younger women, some who claim they were underage. 'It's been an open secret for a long time,' one anonymous woman told the outlet. Model Laura La Rue said she met Leto in 2008, when she was 16 and he was 36. Despite her being underage, which La Rue claims Leto knew, he asked her for number and things quickly took a sexual turn, she said. She described one incident while she visiting him when she was 17, alleging Leto 'just walked out, d– out, like it was normal.' A representative for Leto denied that allegation, saying their interactions involved 'nothing sexual or inappropriate.' They further claimed that La Rue 'later applied to work as Mr. Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate.' Another accuser similarly recalled meeting Leto while underage. She described a time, after she'd turned 18, when they were at Leo's house and he 'suddenly pulled his penis out and started masturbating … grabbed my hand, and put it on him.' The exposé, titled 'The Cult of Leto,' is filled with similar accusations against the 53-year-ol. The women accuse him of preying on cute, young girls, several of whom they say were recruited to attend his parties in the mid-2000s. A representative for the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman 'expressly denied' all the allegations in the story. The exposé comes less than two months after a viral Instagram story from Teilz, who reupped a 2012 claim that she was 'assaulted and traumatized' by Leto when she was 17. 'He knew my age and didn't care. What he did was predatory, terrifying and unacceptable,' she said. She then received dozens of replies from women who shared their own experiences with the actor — some claiming he was inappropriate with them when they were as young as 14. Teilz reposted those replies, all of which can be read in her Story Highlight. Representatives for Leto did not immediately respond to a Daily News request for comment.
