Air Force ‘Frankensteins' Two Wrecked Aircraft Into Working F-35
More than a year ago, the U.S. Air Force took on the unique task of taking two wrecked aircraft and Frankensteining them together into one operational F-35A Lightning II. Now, after a whole lot of weird science, it's alive!
In late 2023, the F-35 Joint Program Office assembled a 'dream team' consisting of the 388th Fighter Wing, the Ogden Air Logistics Complex and Lockheed Martin. The mission: rebuild an AF-211 that lost its nose cone in 2021 using the front end of an F-35 that suffered a severe engine fire in 2014. The endeavor was affectionately called the 'Franken-bird' project.

Scott Taylor, a lead mechanical engineer at Lockheed Martin, said his team was already looking into feasibility since it has already pulled off a restoration project on an F-22 with significant damage. But this was the first time trying something like this with an F-35.
'All of the aircraft sections can be de-mated and re-mated theoretically, but it's just never been done before,' Taylor told the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. 'This is the first F-35 'Franken-bird' to date. This is history.'
The work involved re-installing landing gear, rewiring the aircraft, rebuilding the cockpit, and installing several components that don't often pop up in flight line maintenance shops. It involved completing several tasks that had never occurred at the field level, resulting in valuable updates to the technical data used by all F-35 maintainers.
On top of all that new proficiency, the project is estimated to have cost under $6 million dollars, way less than the typical $80 million shelled out for a new F-35A.
After completing a successful functional flight, the 'Franken-bird' is off to Texas for final certifications before returning to service.

In addition to doubling electric vehicle sales within the first six months of 2025, GM said its share of the electric vehicle market doubled. GM has reported several production changes to electric vehicle manufacturing this year, often citing 'marketplace changes.' General Motors slightly more than doubled electric vehicle sales this year compared with the first five months of 2024, which the company said outstripped the industry average for that time period. The Detroit automaker broke with its traditional quarterly sales release cycle to report trucks and SUVs from its Chevrolet brand largely drove the difference. GM hasn't reported vehicle sales on a monthly basis since March 2018. Across all brands, GM sold 62,830 electric vehicles from January to May of 2025, with the Chevrolet brand comprising 37,620 of those sales. Crosstown rival Ford Motor Co., the only Detroit Three automaker to still report monthly sales, during the same time period, sold 34,132 vehicles across its all-electric vehicle lineup, which currently includes the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and the E-Transit van. While the high percentages seem impressive, a year-over-year comparison presents a low bar, said Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at Telemetry. Not all of GM's EVs were on the market at the same period last year. The Chevrolet Blazer's stop-sale from software challenges lasted from December 2023 and ended in March 2024, and dealerships didn't receive Equinox vehicles until mid-summer 2024. Cadillac's Optiq and Vistiq vehicles rolled out just this year. Consumer sales of the Silverado EV also didn't pick up until May 2024 ― prior to that period, the vehicle appeared in only some fleet sales of the work truck configuration. 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV: The new SS midsize SUV is the brand's fastest SS ever 'Sales have indeed grown substantially in the past 12 months, but modest increases yield big percentage changes when the numbers are small to begin with,' Abuelsamid said. 'It's a percentage bias and it's what we've been seeing in EV sales for a couple of years.' That isn't to say GM's EV growth spurt isn't still impressive. GM is a leader in the electric vehicle space, offering the broadest range of powertrains on the market, according to Alan Haig, president of dealership merger-and-acquisitions firm Haig Partners. In the firm's most recent industry report, Haig notes GM dealers see great future earnings potential across all four GM brands, which translates into stronger offers on GM dealerships when they go up for sale. Customers are pouring into dealership showrooms to check out the latest vehicles, Haig said in the report, and that demand then lifts all departments within the dealership. Sales of electric vehicles may be growing exponentially, but they still fall far short of the business the company does with gas-powered models. 'GM's in a really good spot right now. Their electric vehicles are selling well, but their (internal combustion vehicles) are selling better,' Haig told the Detroit Free Press. 'Sitting here today, most customers are choosing gas. And when that tax credit goes away, it's going to pull demand away from EVs even more.' Top-selling models Since the first 100 or so Chevrolet Equinox EVs arrived at dealerships last year, the vehicle has quickly become a top seller for the company's electric vehicle portfolio. Through the second quarter 2024, GM sold 1,013. Even without June sales figures, 21,804 electric Equinox vehicles sold in 2025. Scott Bell, vice president of global Chevrolet, said more than half of electric-vehicle sales volume this year came from customers new to General Motors. 'It's certainly the most affordable EV out there with that kind of range. It is by far the leader in the clubhouse — it doubles our Blazer volume easily on a monthly basis,' he said. 'Once you convert to an EV, you're not leaving. Especially once you've invested in the infrastructure, a home charger, 86% of them will stay.' 'Refocus on fossil fuels' Meanwhile, GM's electric vehicle sales success occurs amid growing concern that a shift to a broader electric vehicle portfolio could harm automakers' long-term profits. Bank of America analyst John Murphy said June 4 while presenting the annual 'Car Wars' report that he advised a retreat to gas-powered vehicle production to generate enough cash to protect against an uncertain market. Much of that uncertainty stems from the White House. In his second term, President Donald Trump has adopted several policies aimed at reducing clean energy incentives. His "Big, Beautiful" tax bill proposes to kill the electric vehicle tax credit by the end of this year and penalize hybrid and electric vehicle owners with annual fees to compensate for lost revenue customers would have paid in gas tax. Meanwhile, Trump's tariff plans continue to throw a wrench in the intricate multinational supply chain relied on by every automaker that builds and sells vehicles in the United States. Many automakers announced plans to adjust operations and footprints seeking to mitigate costs from tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts. But not every Trump-backed initiative has drawn criticism from the industry. The auto sector rejoiced May 22 when the U.S. Senate voted to revoke California's emissions waivers that would ban the sale of new gasoline-powered cars and trucks by 2035. The week before, GM emailed thousands of its non-hourly employees requesting they use scripted talking points to lobby senators to veto the bill, the Wall Street Journal reported. 'Emissions standards that are not aligned with market realities pose a serious threat to our business by undermining consumer choice and vehicle affordability,' the message reportedly said. California, alongside 16 other states and the District of Columbia, would have required electric vehicle sales to comprise over one-third of all vehicles sold in their respective states, which industry leaders warned would result in a dramatic reduction of new vehicle sales in affected markets. Increasing the number of electric vehicles sold, industry leaders warned, would require automakers to send dealerships fewer gas-powered vehicles, limiting the supply of cars that dealerships know they could sell. Shifting production plans GM has reported several production changes to electric vehicle manufacturing this year, often citing 'marketplace changes.' GM said April 23 that it planned to expand transmission production at its Toledo (Ohio) Propulsions Systems plant where it builds transmissions used in the Silverado and Sierra pickup trucks, while reducing electric drive unit production. The company announced May 27 its largest-ever propulsion investment would be for gas-powered vehicles, $888 million, on next-generation V-8 engine production. Yet the company remains firm that it is not turning away from its zero-emissions objectives. In addition to doubling electric vehicle sales within the first six months of 2025, GM said its share of the electric vehicle market doubled as well. Even if the market isn't where GM planned for it to be when designing its electric portfolio, consumers shouldn't consider their production changes as a sign the company will abandon its EV goals. If nothing else, Haig said, the company has already spent so much to make sure it wouldn't be left behind once the market shifted in favor of more electrified options. 'GM has spent billions of dollars on these EV products, and they're second behind Tesla. They're trying to get a return on investment on all these products,' Haig said. 'But if the CARB mandate is eliminated, ultimately, they've got shareholders they need to answer to and they're making very strong profits on their trucks and SUVs.' Customer 'not ready' to go electric Despite numerous changes from electric vehicle production, GM still believes in an all-electric future, Barra also said during a Wall Street Journal event last week. A full electric vehicle transition depends entirely on what happens with the regulatory environment and national charging network ― the former outpacing GM customer demand, the latter falling behind on the infrastructure needed to improve confidence for vehicle buyers. 'The customer was telling us they weren't ready,' Barra said onstage at the Future of Everything conference in New York City, adding that regulations requiring 37% electric vehicle sales penetration greatly exceed the 7% of vehicles sold in April. 'I've been saying for a couple of years now that I thought the regulatory environment was getting in front of the customer, and I've always said that we needed one national standard,' she said. 'We have a portfolio, we're committed, but frankly, this was necessary for the customer.' Barra touted GM's recent investments in charging infrastructure, including partnerships with Pilot Flying J and Tesla Inc. GM is also relying on its dealership network to determine underserved areas that require more charging options. 'We've got to get a little further, and I think that we will,' Barra said. STORY: Stocks fell across the board Friday after more clashes in the Middle East, with the Dow dropping about 1.8%, the S&P 500 more than 1% and the Nasdaq declining 1.3%. Iran launched missiles at Israel in response to intensive Israeli strikes aimed at crippling Tehran's ability to build nuclear weapons. Airline stocks fell on fears that fuel costs could climb, while defense stocks such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman rose. Melissa Brown, managing director of investment decision research at SImCorp, says she thinks the effect of the conflict may be short-lived. 'Over the long-termn,I've seen studies that show that wars generally don't have a major impact on stock markets over you know, say a period of a few months to a few years with some obvious exceptions. [FLASH] If we don't see a huge escalation, particularly outside of the borders where we're already seeing the conflict, I think that investors are going to go back to the idea that the Fed's going to lower rates, that we're not going to be in a recession, and even with somewhat higher oil prices, we managed quite well with higher oil prices for the past few years.' Other stocks on the move included Photoshop maker Adobe, which lost more than 5%. The company raised its annual revenue forecast but that was overshadowed by concerns that the pace of its AI adoption was too slow. And shares of Oracle jumped more than 7.5% to hit a record high. The stock is now up more than 21% in the two days since the technology company gave an upbeat forecast driven by demand for its AI services. More EVs will support homes during power outages, add energy grid capacity
Some homeowners are looking to electric vehicles to solve their power outage problems this summer. Automakers increasingly are launching EVs equipped with the ability to support bidirectional charging. The technology can allow energy from the vehicle's battery to be directed to power a plugged-in device, to restore power to a home or to return power to the electrical grid. In addition to being a benefit of EV ownership, it could be a revenue generator for customers and help support a robust electrical grid, particularly at times of peak energy demand and as data centers and artificial intelligence increase electrical needs. Leveraging the capabilities of these virtual power plants, however, could set up a battle with the U.S. energy sector. A recent report from solar company Wolf River Electric studying the Event-correlated Outage Dataset in America found Michigan had the most major power outages of U.S. states during the summer months from 2019 to 2023. Tim Addison, 41, of Northville Township, Michigan, is evaluating EV options with bidirectional charging after recently losing his power. It'd been nearly a year since he lost power, but before that, he'd experienced multiple stretches of a couple days without electricity. It's especially a problem because Addison's mother-in-law who lives with his family relies on an oxygen machine. When the house loses power, the family has to go to his mother's house or a hotel. He evaluated a $15,000 to $20,000 home generator as well as energy storage systems, but bidirectional charging looks like the best option for him: "It seems like it makes more sense than having a battery or a Generac you use 10 days out of a year." He's disappointed in how few EV models are capable of bidirectional charging now, but he also feels some pressure potentially to make a decision on a vehicle soon with the "One Big Beautiful" reconciliation budget bill in Washington expected to remove a tax credit of up to $7,500 for EV purchases. "The moment I know the tax legislation is going through, that's when I have to pull the trigger," the tax attorney said. "It just becomes a little bit more expensive." He knows his family also will have to figure out transportation needs if the EV is powering his home. Ryan O'Gorman, 51, of Beverly Hills, Michigan, who owns a 2025 F-150 Lightning, says he'll typically use another one of his family's vehicles if he needs to leave while using the bidirectional charging capability of his truck. "Typically the concern is the refrigerator or freezer, and that it'll thaw," said the energy services manager at Ford. "But that takes hours. So long as you're not going out of town, you're probably fine." About a year ago, O'Gorman used his truck for a three-day power outage at his 1845-built, 3,700-square-foot home, where he loses power a few times a year. It was cool enough where the house didn't need air conditioning, he said, but still, there was power left over in the vehicle. "It took a minute to turn on, but after a couple of hours, you forget it's running off the truck," he said. "The kids were on their phones. We were cooking and doing everything we normally do." Vehicle-to-home Ford Motor Co. in 2022 announced a partnership with solar company Sunrun and claimed to be the first to allow Americans to power their home with their truck. The extended-range model of the F-150 Lightning is capable of powering the average house for three days and up to 10 days with rationing or solar power. The pickups start at $63,345. By 2026, all of General Motors Co.'s EVs will be able to send energy to a residential home (called vehicle-to-home, or V2H) when paired with a GM Energy Home System. "Our commitment to an all-electric future," GM spokesperson Sanaz Marbley said in an email, "is focused not only on delivering a world-class portfolio of electric vehicles, but investing in the EV ecosystem that will enable mass adoption." Chrysler parent Stellantis NV's delayed electric trucks - the Ram 1500 REV and Ramcharger - also have bidirectional charging capability. And the Ramcharger has a 130 kilowatt generator on board, which the company says is close to the power of 10 home generators. Supporting the ability to power a home requires an integration system that converts energy from the truck into power that can be used by the home and connects into the main electrical panel where the grid feeds electricity to the house. The integration system Ford developed with Sunrun costs $3,895 at retail, and installation can be at least another $1,000 more, said Dave McCreadie, a Ford leader in EV-to-grid integration strategy and business development. Programs like Ford's Power Promise that covers the cost of the standard installation of a Level 2 home charger for buyers of a new EV doesn't include the integration system. McCreadie said Ford's system is built to be competitive with Generacs, but unlike a natural gas-powered generator, the EV solution is silent. Generac spokesperson Jonathan Stern in a statement said bidirectional charging remains in its infancy, and some homeowners will prefer a traditional generator to keep their EV charged and ready to get to safety, if needed. "We firmly believe that homeowners won't trade mobility for resiliency," he said. "If they are experiencing a power outage due to a severe weather event such as a hurricane, storm or wildfire, depleting your vehicle's battery to power your home could potentially put evacuation plans at severe risk." Customers of bidirectional chargers can also consider full interconnection. This technology feeds energy back into the grid (vehicle-to-grid, or V2G). McCreadie said it would require a software update and an interconnection agreement with a customer's utility. Not all vehicles with V2H capabilities also support V2G. "These batteries (in EVs) are so large, and the typical driver is only using a fraction of it every day," McCreadie said. "That leaves a lot left over to potentially put to good use for grid needs." That includes days when the power from the grid is flowing, but an EV owner could opt to power their home from their charged-up EV from overnight. They might do this to lower their bill, since electricity prices often are cheaper at night than during the day when there is more energy demand. Ford did a demonstration of this last year in Maryland. "A customer," McCreadie said, "can end up saving tens or dozens of dollars, even maybe as much as $100 per month in an extreme case on their electricity bill." V2G Interconnection also could allow electricity from plugged-in EVs to be sent back to the grid, similar to when residential solar panels produce more energy than is required by a homeowner. In return, a utility might offer an incentive or pay a rate to the EV owner for the electricity that could show up on their bill. Few utilities, however, currently offer these kinds of programs. The state of California is incentivizing bidirectional export compensation, and PG&E Corp., one of the country's largest electrical companies, is offering programs to support that. Detroit-based DTE Energy Co. says it's working with major automakers on bidirectional charging and is testing V2G technology with electric school buses since they typically are available when utilities need energy the most: during peak summer afternoons when demand is greatest. "This is an exciting, emerging technology that is still quite early in the development stage," spokesperson Ryan Lowry said in a statement. "As V2G technology matures, DTE will continue testing applications on the grid while expanding integration efforts, including evaluating export compensation, rate design, and tariffs to support customer participation and grid reliability." Michigan's largest electrical utility, CMS Corp.'s Consumers Energy, says since bidirectional charging technology isn't yet affordable or widely available for most customers, it doesn't offer any customer incentives. "Consumers Energy is committed making EV ownership convenient and affordable," spokesperson Brian Wheeler said in statement, "and we can see a point in a few years where we might play a role to support bidirectional charging as a benefit to customers and the grid." McCreadie said Ford is involved in efforts to lobby for these kinds of programs to residential customers. "There's a whole long story that has to do with net energy metering, and some of the battles that have been waged on what that export rate should be," McCreadie said. "And I think some similar things are happening or going to be happening right now with EVs." He added that power companies are motivated to offer these kinds of programs because peaker power plants that only operate during times of high energy demand are expensive and capital-intensive. Virtual power plant remedies like bidirectional charging eliminate some of the need to invest in more of those forms of generation. Collaboration for expansion A couple recently announced collaborations seek further development in this area. One is ChargeScape LLC, a joint venture among Ford, BMW AG, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. whose software platform connects EV customers with utilities and automakers, and Leapfrog Power Inc. that does business as Leap. Working together is expected to help automakers obtain information on grid demand and rates to leverage EVs as revenue-generating grid assets efficiently and at scale starting in California and expanding nationwide. The key to that is improving utilities' comfort with interconnection, which could unlock revenue earnings for EV owners of five to 10 times on an annual basis of V2H applications, Leap CEO Jason Michaels said. "There's incredible demand for this, especially if you look at the data centers that are expected to be interconnected," Michaels said. "You're talking about adding something that's equivalent to the entire state of California during the hottest heat wave in terms of load onto our grid. There's just not enough new generation that's available. Gas power plants can't be stood up in time to do it. Even solar and wind can't be deployed fast enough to meet that need. "There's a real need," he continued, "for this capacity to be participating in the grid, providing support and enabling load growth. And we need that load growth to help drive our economy, win the AI battle, have data centers and other things." Also last month,EV charger supplier ChargePoint Holdings Inc. and power management company Eaton Corp. plc announced a partnership toward creating a one-stop solution for EV charging equipment that supports bidirectional charging. "To make charging more accessible, you need access to charging infrastructure," Paul Ryan, Eaton's general manager of energy transition, said about addressing a major challenge to EV adoption. "You need more charges, whether that's on public corridor highways or in the homes. So, we need to be able to streamline this so it shouldn't be complicated. This partnership is focusing on innovation, streamlining installation and improving reliability." Hossein Kazemi, ChargePoint's chief technology officer for hardware, noted helping the country turn to EVs could double grid capacity in North America. "As the EV adoption continues," Kazemi said, "the need for the power from the utility is going to go up, and at some point, definitely the grid interactive features are going to be very important to have on the chargers."
