Terminally-ill woman plans solo round-the-world sailing voyage

Powys County Times20 hours ago
A terminally-ill woman is planning on competing in a solo round-the-world sailing voyage.
Jazz Turner, 27, lives with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a debilitating genetic condition that affects connective tissue.
She wants to take part in next year's Royal Western Yacht Club of England's WorldStar challenge, which would make her the first female, disabled sailor to complete such a feat.
Ms Turner, from Seaford, East Sussex, was diagnosed with the illness, which causes fainting and seizures, when she was 18.
Due to complications, doctors have told her that her condition is now terminal.
'As my condition has progressed, the one thing I made sure of was that I never stopped sailing,' she said.
Next year's challenge follows her recent circumnavigation of the UK and Ireland, known as Project Fear, but she now needs to secure the right boat and sponsorship to carry her around the globe.
'I've always been drawn to challenges that push me to my edge,' she said.
'Project Fear was born off the back of the announcement of the WorldStar 2026. I face many a 'no' in my life, I do my best to turn them into 'yes'.
'The right partnership could turn this vision into reality.
'Whether it's a boat owner willing to lend their yacht or sponsors eager to back a remarkable human and sporting story, I'm inviting them to join me on this journey.'
The WorldStar 2026 leaves Plymouth in September next year and tests sailors to circle the globe without outside assistance or stops.
Adrian Gray, commodore of the Royal Western Yacht Club, said: 'Jazz is the epitome of why we created this Corinthian-style race.
'This is a race for sailors, run by sailors and the only one of its style in the UK.
'When we initially reached out to Jazz and she told us her 'Project Fear' campaign, a solo, non-stop, unassisted circumnavigation of the UK and Ireland, was started following our announcement of the WorldStar, we knew we wanted to help Jazz fulfil her life's dream.'

MasterChef winner defends John Torode and admits 'I feel awful'

MasterChef winner defends John Torode and admits 'I feel awful' Thomasina Miers became the first winner of a new look MasterChef when it launched in 2005, but now she has spoken out on what she thinks of the recent allegation against John Torode John Torode has been axed from MasterChef (Image: BBC) Former MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers has said that she "feels awful" after John Torode sacked from his role on the BBC show. ‌ After the pair were chosen to co-host the rebooted MasterChef in 2005, John Torode and Gregg Wallace formed what quickly became one of the most iconic duos in British TV. ‌ But their partnership was torn apart in recent weeks after 45 complaints were upheld against Wallace, which included one for "unwelcome physical contact" and three involving a state of undress. Meanwhile, soon after Wallace's demise his co-host Torode saw one allegation of racism upheld against him, leading to his dismissal. ‌ Torode has passionately denied the allegation of racism and has expressed his shock and sadness. Thomasina Miers won MasterChef in 2005 (Image:for Pen) Thomasina shared a look back to her time on the show during a chat on the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast. She disclosed what she thought about the news of Torode's upheld allegation: "I felt awful for John. I mean, and also the elegance of his response to it, how he conducted himself." ‌ She added: "I think, yeah, I was kind of gobsmacked by John (the news of the allegation being upheld), who was so caring and intent on the people under his watch, under his care." Thomasina was crowned winner of MasterChef in the first of the rebooted series of the show in 2005. A year after winning the competition, she co-founded her own restaurant chain, the popular Mexican-style street food brand Wahaca, which now has 14 sites in the UK. John Torode saw an allegation of racism upheld against him (Image: Dave) ‌ Thomasina is not the only celebrity to show their support for Torode following the racism allegation. Amanda Holden and McFly star Danny Jones liked the former MasterChef star's post on Instagram from July 14 where he confirmed that he was the individual who was alleged to have used "racial language". A BBC spokesperson released a statement saying: "John Torode has identified himself as having an upheld allegation of using racist language against him. "This allegation – which involves an extremely offensive racist term being used in the workplace – was investigated and substantiated by the independent investigation led by the law firm Lewis Silkin. John Torode denies the allegation. ‌ She was the first winner of the rebooted MasterChef in 2005 (Image: Getty Images for Freuds) "He has stated he has no recollection of the alleged incident and does not believe that it happened. He also says that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. "The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed." Article continues below The first three episodes of the latest series of MasterChef - featuring Torode and Wallace before they were axed - dropped on iPlayer yesterday morning (Wednesday, August 6). The episodes appear to have been edited to include fewer jokes between the pair and less chat between them and the amateur chefs than usual.

Abbey Clancy flashes her svelte physique in a gold skimpy bikini and sports trendy £430 Gucci bucket hat on luxury south of France holiday with shirtless husband Peter Crouch

Abbey Clancy flashed her svelte physique in a gold skimpy bikini as she enjoyed a day at the beach in the south of France with her shirtless husband Peter Crouch on Tuesday. The bikini-clad model, 39, was every inch the style icon in a trendy £430 Gucci bucket hat and stylish crochet cover up. Former footballer Peter, 44, showed off his abs as he strolled along the beach in turtle pattern shorts. Abbey looked as though she couldn't bare the sweltering heat as she wrapped a scarf around her head to keep out of the sun. Abbey and Peter's trip to France comes just days after they holidayed in Almancil, Portugal with their children. The loved-up couple share four children - Sophia, 14, Liberty, ten, Johnny, seven, and Jack, six. Peter and Abbey, who married in 2011, looked more than loved-up on their relaxing break away. The couple jetted off for their sun-soaked holiday just weeks after celebrating their 14th wedding anniversary. They got married at Stapleford Park on June 30, 2011, and renewed their vows in the Maldives to mark their ten-year anniversary. Abbey recently opened up on the way she's kept her marriage to Peter thriving over the years. She admitted the key was 'growing together' throughout time with Peter and always staying 'in sync' with him. 'When we look back at our wedding day, some of the choices we've made, some things we've done in the past, we're like ''Bloody hell, who were we then?'',' the TV star told The Mirror. 'But today? We're still in sync, we've got the same interests and the same things that make us laugh. It's really a happy time for us at the moment. 'We honestly do everything together, except work - actually even work, because we have our podcast.' Peter later slipped into a blue linen shirt as he sipped on a glass of wine The couple jetted off for their sun-soaked holiday just weeks after celebrating their 14th wedding anniversary The model looked incredibly stylish in her beach wear The couple often give humorous insights into their relationship on their podcast, The Therapy Crouch, not shying away from discussing anything and everything. During one chat on their podcast, the couple revealed the strict rule they've placed on their four children to improve their behaviour. They implemented an iPad and phone ban at Christmas, insisting it's led to a more positive attitude in their household. Peter explained: 'We said to them iPads and phones are gone and I feel we've stuck to that. We made a conscious effort amongst ourselves to cut them out and they've properly cut them out.' They mentioned other rules they've put in place include focusing on homework, spending time as a family before having quality time together once the kids go to bed. Though their new rules were a success, it is not always plain-sailing and Abbey admitted Peter can sometimes get on her nerves when it comes to parenting. She told OK! magazine: 'Pete's good cop and I'm bad cop. I'm the one going, 'Do your homework, eat your veg', and Pete's like, 'Let's play, kids!' which can be annoying but… it works. 'Our kids are very good, though. They've all got distinct personalities but they're all easy-going. That's not to say family life isn't chaotic – it's chaotic! There's absolutely nothing chilled about, but we wouldn't have it any other way.'
