Iraq exhumes +65 mass graves of Yazidi victims in Sinjar

Shafaq News – Duhok
Specialized forensic teams have exhumed 68 out of 162 known burial sites—both mass and individual—where ISIS committed massacres against Yazidi civilians across Sinjar district since 2014, according to the Investigation and Evidence-Gathering Authority in Duhok.
Nechirvan Suleiman, head of the Authority, told Shafaq News that excavation efforts continue in partnership with local and international organizations to open the remaining graves and formally document evidence of the crimes.
So far, the identities of 293 victims have been confirmed and buried in designated cemeteries in Sinjar, while the remains of over 450 individuals are still unidentified, he noted, adding that 'the fate of 2,883 Yazidis is still unknown.'
Calling for increased technical and logistical support to accelerate the process and ensure accuracy, Suleiman pointed out that excavation teams are working under harsh conditions due to difficult terrain, weather challenges, and overlapping skeletal remains.
Families of victims and the missing have renewed their calls to speed up excavation and uncover the fate of their loved ones who remain underground and unidentified.
Soumaya Khalaf, a Yazidi woman whose father and two brothers were abducted, told Shafaq News that the remains of one relative were recovered and buried in the Kojo cemetery—designated for Yazidi victims of ISIS in Sinjar—while the others remain missing.
Jalal Jassim, another relative, said his son and two brothers disappeared more than 11 years ago, and the family has received no information about their fate, despite repeated follow-ups with relevant authorities and submitting DNA samples.
Yazidi lawmaker Mahma Khalil revealed earlier that more than 2,300 Yazidis remain missing, and 52 of 93 documented mass graves in Sinjar have yet to be opened.
The Yazidi community, a Kurdish-speaking ethno-religious minority in Iraq, faced persecution by ISIS after the group seized Sinjar on August 3, 2014. Around 1,290 Yazidis were killed, and over 70 mass graves have since been uncovered. The community, numbering about 500,000 in Iraq, observes its New Year on April 17, which the Kurdistan Regional Government has designated a public holiday.

Trump hails new tariffs: Billions now flowing to US

Shafaq News – Washington On Thursday, US President Donald Trump welcomed the rollout of new tariffs on imports from dozens of countries, describing the move as a significant victory for American trade policy. 'Billions of dollars in tariffs are now flowing into the United States,' Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. In a separate post, he had called the measures 'reciprocal,' targeting nations that had 'taken advantage' of the US for years. The tariffs, authorized by an executive order signed last week, raise import duties from 10% to between 15% and 41% on a broad range of products. Affected countries include major trading partners such as the European Union, Japan, South Korea, India, and others.

Oil production resumes at two Kurdistan Region fields

Also in ECONOMY Baghdad says ready to receive any amount of oil from KRG KRG registers over 800k employees for digital financial initiative Erbil hands over oil to Baghdad, receives budget share Baghdad to resume payment of KRG salaries Tuesday: Deputy PM A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Oil production in the Kurdistan Region's Sarsang and Atrush oil blocks has resumed, an oil firm said on Wednesday, after damages sustained due to drone strikes last month halted production. ShaMaran Petroleum, a Canadian oil development and exploration company with shares in the two fields, said that production at its facilities has now resumed after it was halted on July 15 when a drone strike targeted the Sarsang block. 'The Atrush Block was not impacted, and production restarted at full capacity. The Sarsang Block restarted production at a reduced rate due to the damage sustained,' ShaMaran said in a statement. The Kurdistan Region has come under dozens of rocket and drone attacks in recent weeks, including strikes on its oil facilities. The Kurdish government has blamed Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi) for the attacks - charges strongly denied as 'unacceptable' by Baghdad. The strikes have badly damaged the Kurdistan Region's oil infrastructure, halting production in some fields entirely and cutting total output by about 70 percent. According to ShaMaran, half of Sarsang's oil production is expected to remain offline 'until late October 2025.' On July 15, HKN Energy, Sarsang's main stakeholder, reported an explosion at the oil field following a drone strike. The facility caught fire and operations were immediately suspended. ShaMaran explained that despite no attacks at the Atrush block, production in the two facilities was suspended 'as a precaution following several similar incidents.' The production drop at the Kurdistan Region's oil facilities has also delayed the transfer of oil to Baghdad, which has in turn stalled salary payments, as the federal government cites insufficient funds. The strikes also came amid suspended oil exports through Turkey. Oil exports from the Kurdistan Region through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline have been suspended since March 2023 after a Paris-based arbitration court ruled in favor of Baghdad against Ankara, saying the latter had violated a 1973 pipeline agreement by allowing Erbil to begin exporting oil independently in 2014. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), federal authorities, and international oil companies continue to negotiate a long-term framework to restore full oil export capacity from the Region. ShaMaran holds a 50 percent working interest in the Atrush block and an 18 percent share in the Sarsang block.

Suspected ISIS attack kills two SDF fighters in east Syria

Also in Syria SDF captures suspected senior ISIS operative in Hasaka Suspected ISIS attack injures three Asayish in east Syria UNSG urges calm amid renewed violence in northern, southern Syria State-affiliated factions, Kurdish-led forces clash again in northern Syria A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Wednesday that two of their fighters were killed in a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) attack in eastern Syria's Deir ez-Zor province, vowing to continue the fight against jihadist remnants. 'At approximately 8:00 pm today, two ISIS terrorists riding a motorcycle targeted one of our military vehicles with machine gun fire, resulting in the martyrdom of two of our heroic fighters … in the town of al-Bahra, in the Hajin area of eastern Deir ez-Zor,' the SDF said in a statement. It labeled the attack as 'part of ISIS's ongoing efforts to destabilize the security and stability in areas our forces have liberated from the grip of terrorism,' vowing to continue the fight against the jihadists' 'growing threat' in the region. ISIS rose to power and seized swathes of Iraqi and Syrian land in a brazen offensive in 2014, declaring a so-called 'caliphate.' The SDF defeated the group in Syria in 2019 with the help of the US-led global coalition against ISIS. The Kurdish-led and US-backed SDF, the de facto army of northeast Syria (Rojava), has carried out numerous operations this year to counter what they say is a resurgence in ISIS activity, targeting both their forces and civilians. On Wednesday, the SDF announced the capture of a senior ISIS operative in Rojava's Hasaka city, in an operation with support from the US-led global coalition. Earlier in the day, at least one Kurdish-led internal security forces (Asayish) member was injured in two separate suspected ISIS attacks in Deir ez-Zor.
