Rafizi says attack on son unrelated to Ismail Sabri, KJ

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli's 12-year-old son was attacked at a shopping mall in Putrajaya last week.
PETALING JAYA : PKR's Rafizi Ramli today denied any links between the recent attack on his son and former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
In a post on X, the Pandan MP said there were claims that information was provided by a whistleblower a week before the attack on his son about a money laundering case allegedly involving Ismail, the country's ninth prime minister.
There were also claims that the same information revolved around projects connected to Khairy when he was the health minister, he said.
'Both of these allegations are false. It has nothing to do with Ismail Sabri or Khairy or any other politician,' he said, describing such claims as a malicious attempt to divert attention from the case.
The former PKR deputy president's 12-year-old son was attacked at a shopping mall in Putrajaya last week.
Rafizi said CCTV footage showed that two men, dressed in black with their faces fully covered by helmets, had followed his wife's car on a motorcycle.
His son, who was dragged and stabbed with a syringe, was rushed to hospital for treatment and a check-up. The assailants meanwhile escaped.
Rafizi said he suspected that the attack was planned, and that his wife was likely observed by the assailants for a few days beforehand.
The former economy minister also said he believed it was a warning for him not to speak out on certain issues.
A day after the attack, Rafizi said he suspected that it was linked to a case he was looking into, recalling an earlier meeting with a group of whistleblowers.
He also revealed that his wife had received a text message from an unknown number, reading: 'Be quiet. If you continue, AIDS.'

The National Defence Ministry said that the IOT, led by Malaysian Defence Attaché to Cambodia Col Nazlee Abdul Rahim, will visit the areas surrounding the world-famous Preah Vihear Temple. bootstrap slideshow 'They are visiting the province this morning to observe, verify and report on the updates of the situation after the ceasefire,' said the ministry's spokesperson Maly Socheata, during a media briefing. Led by Malaysia, the IOT comprises military attaches from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam, who are scheduled to visit conflict-hit zones in the northern part of Cambodia. PropertyGuru Verified Badge – tailored for Malaysia – introduced to curb scams

KUALA LUMPUR: PropertyGuru Malaysia has introduced the PropertyGuru Verified Badge for property agents on its platform, in partnership with the Board of Valuers, Appraisers, Estate Agents and Property Managers (LPPEH), to curb property scams in the local market. PropertyGuru Malaysia country manager Kenneth Soh said the initiative is tailored for Malaysia, where consumer awareness remains lower compared with its other markets. 'This particular push is Malaysia-specific. The badge helps prevent scams by ensuring consumers can easily identify verified professionals with traceable details, giving them recourse if anything goes wrong,' he said at the official launch yesterday. He said Vietnam already has verified agents and listings, while Singapore's smaller market benefits from stronger consumer awareness, making risks more manageable. In contrast, many Malaysians are still unclear on how to verify an agent's licence. Soh said this gap has fuelled rental scams, one of the most common fraud tactics, where conmen pose as agents, show units booked on short-term rental platforms and disappear after collecting deposits. 'Scammers are getting more and more creative. By starting from the discovery stage, we want consumers to look for verified agents on PropertyGuru. We have their identify card, licence tag and phone number, so if anything happens, there is recourse. Without verification, consumers are often left with no way to trace the scammer,' he added. Soh said over 100 had already been verified on the day of its soft launch (Monday), and numbers are expected to rise quickly. PropertyGuru currently has close to 10,000 agents in Malaysia. 'Our target is to get as close to 100% as possible within the year, depending on submissions from our agent partners and the verification process through eKYC and licence checks,' he said. Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department head SAC Mohd Razali Mohd Idrus said property-related scams have become increasingly sophisticated, often involving impersonation of licensed agents to deceive unsuspecting buyers and tenants. 'Public awareness and preventive measures are critical. PDRM welcomes collaborative initiatives such as PropertyGuru's Verified Badge, which can help Malaysians make safer property decisions and reduce opportunities for market exploitation,' he said. The PropertyGuru Verified Badge is awarded to registered real estate negotiators, real estate agents and probationary estate agents with active licences via LPPEH which completes PropertyGuru's secure verification process. This process involves confirming agents' identity through eKYC, validating their professional licence details, verifying their registered contact information and acknowledging the Verified Badge terms. Once completed, the PropertyGuru Verified Badge will appear on the agent or negotiator's profile, listings, and search results, making it easier for property seekers to engage with legitimate professionals. According to the LPPEH, unlicensed individuals defrauded more than 1,500 victims, resulting in nearly RM60 million in losses between 2019 and 2023.

Xi makes second-ever visit to Tibet as president

Xi Jinping last flew to Tibet in July 2021 where he urged people there to 'follow the party'. (EPA Images pic) BEIJING : Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa today for his second-ever visit as China's leader to mark the 60th anniversary of Tibet's founding as an autonomous region. Six years after the 14th Dalai Lama fled into exile in India following a failed uprising, China's ruling Communist Party established the Tibet autonomous region in 1965, the country's fifth and final autonomous region after Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Guangxi and Ningxia. The designation was meant to offer local ethnic minority groups such as the Tibetans greater say over policy matters, including freedom of religious belief. But international human rights groups and exiles routinely describe China's rule in Tibet as 'oppressive', an accusation that Beijing rejects. Xi last flew to Tibet in July 2021 where he urged people there to 'follow the party' in a visit largely perceived by outside observers to signal the Communist Party's confidence that order had finally been established in a region with a long history of protest against Chinese rule. During a brief period following the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when China further opened its doors to the outside world, Tibet was rocked by protests by monks and nuns, and then a series of self-immolations. Prior to 2021, the last Chinese leader to visit Tibet was Jiang Zemin in 1990. More broadly, Tibet is a highly strategic region for China due to its border with India. Troops from both sides had clashed at their border over the years. Xi's arrival in Tibet coincided with a rare trip this week by China's top diplomat Wang Yi to India, where both countries pledged to rebuild ties damaged by a deadly 2020 border skirmish. Xi was accompanied by Wang Huning and Cai Qi, the party's fourth and fifth-ranked leaders. In 2015, the party sent the now retired Yu Zhengsheng, who held the equivalent rank of Wang at the time, to Tibet for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Tibet autonomous region.
