Keanu Cupido's Mamelodi Sundowns journey: From holiday dreams to automatic starter

Keanu Cupido thought he'd be flying out to the United States for an all-expenses paid holiday when he made Mamelodi Sundowns' final squad for the Fifa Club World Cup.
But rather than finding himself soaking up the sunshine of Florida, Cupido became an integral part of coach Miguel Cardoso's plans. The Portugal-born coach surprisingly drafted Cupido into the starting lineup from the onset, and ended up starting the next two group matches too.
Cupido, speaking on the sidelines of the MTN8 launch this week ahead of their quarter-final tie at home to Richards Bay Sunday, admitted he was shocked after getting the nod to start.
'It's not about (walking) straight into the team. It's been about working behind the scenes. So, it's just hard work that paid off,' the central defender explained.
'It did surprise me (to get the nod), because I hadn't played for a while. So, I thought going to a major tournament like this would be a holiday for me, but God works in mysterious ways.'

Cupido is understandably surprised. Breaking into the star-studded Sundowns team is not easy, and no coach wants to tamper with his defensive organisation.
The 27-year-old, though, insisted that he was welcomed with open arms in the starting lineup as those who played alongside him gave him words of advice.
'The players at Mamelodi Sundowns make it very easy for one of us to perform on the day,' Cupido explained. 'If you go to a big game, the players will tell you: just do the basics, and simple things, then your confidence will grow. And that's what I did.
'So that helped me a lot to settle into the first game, and from then on it was a smooth ride for me.'
Cupido didn't only settle at Sundowns with the help of his teammates and technical team. It also took someone close to his heart to keep him going after a tough start at the club.
'In all honesty, it was tough for me at first, but my wife made it easy for me,' said Cupido, who had only made two appearances for the team prior to the Club World Cup.
'She said 'everything works through God, if it's his timing, then it will happen'. That kept me going.
'So, I feel she played a major part in this. She kept me motivated, head down and working hard. I think that support structure is very important.'

Cupido also credited his former Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler for pushing him after a promising start to his career.
'You need someone to trust you,' Cupido acknowledged. 'At the end of Eric's last two seasons in his last spell, he felt like he trusted me more and more.
'So, I also felt like I needed to give him back. So, since he made me the vice-captain, that gave responsibility for me as a player.
'I think it made me grow as a player as well. If you are comfortable in one spot, then you don't grow. He needed to put more responsibility on me.'
There'll be more responsibilities and expectations that will be placed on Cupido and Co ahead of the new season after winning the hearts of many in the US.
Cupido, though, is not fazed by that, saying the players know that their job at Sundowns comes with expectation, including giving their best season in and season out.
'We feel like we need to take care of our bodies as players firstly, and then the team will come into it when we need to do our recoveries,' Cupido said.
'We also need to look at what we eat because nutrition is very important. So that's the thing that separates professionals from the rest.
'You could see that Tebza [Teboho Mokoena] and [Lucas] Ribeiro played so many games last season, so they are used to the workload.'

Where is former Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer?
Heyneke Meyer is one of the most celebrated coaches in South Africa, having been the first South African coach to win the Super Rugby trophy. With nearly 30 years of experience coaching professional teams, the Mbombela-born coach has secured multiple trophies, including the 2007 Super Rugby trophy with the Vodacom Bulls. After coaching youth and school teams, Meyer rose to the position of head coach for the SWD Eagles in 1998, where he led the team to strong performances in the Currie Cup. He also served as the forwards coach for the Stormers and Emerging Springboks in 1999. In 2000, Meyer joined the Bulls, guiding them to four Currie Cup titles and a historic Super Rugby title in 2007, making him the first South African coach to achieve this feat. The Bulls also became the first and only team to lift the Super Rugby title at that time. After losing the 2007 Currie Cup semifinal against the Free State Cheetahs, Meyer left the Pretoria franchise. On June 30, 2008, he was named head coach of the Leicester Tigers in England. His tenure was short-lived after he took compassionate leave to attend to family matters in South Africa after just 15 matches. The South African coach subsequently stepped down from his position on January 28, 2009 and later took up an executive role with the Bulls. In January 2012, Meyer was appointed head coach of the Springboks on a four-year term, taking over from Peter de Villiers. During his time, the Springboks played commendable rugby but were often dominated and outplayed by the All Blacks during their golden era. Meyer coached the Springboks in their first-ever game against Japan in the 2015 World Cup. The Brave Blossoms produced one of the biggest upsets in rugby history by defeating the Springboks 34–32 with a try in the corner deep into injury time. Following that match, Meyer faced criticism for favouring 'experience over talent' and was required to issue a public apology to South Africans after the embarrassing defeat. After losing to the All Blacks in the 2015 World Cup semifinal, he expressed a desire to continue as coach, but many opposed the extension of his contract. After departing from the Springboks, Heyneke Meyer took on the head coach/director role at Stade Français in the French Top 14 for the 2018–2019 season. As of mid-2025, Heyneke Meyer serves as the Director of Rugby for the Houston SaberCats in Major League Rugby (MLR), a position he has held since July 2021 and is contracted through the end of the 2025 MLR season. Siyabonga Mabena returns: Young stars ready to support Mamelodi Sundowns' title quest
Siyabonga Mabena and the other youngsters are not expected to carry Mamelodi Sundowns this season, though they must strive to succeed with every passing game. Mabena made his long-awaited return to competitive football in the MTN8 quarter-final against Richards Bay last Sunday, following a lengthy injury layoff. The 18-year-old made his return count as he put the final nail in the coffin, helping Sundowns thrash Bay 4–0 to reach the semi-final, where they'll face Orlando Pirates. Mabena's comeback has fuelled belief among some Masandawana supporters that he will finally fulfil his potential this season and come of age. After all, his injury not only saw him miss the U20 AFCON — which Amajita won — but also ruled him out of the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup in the US last month. Kutlwano Letlhaku, 19, meanwhile, featured in both tournaments, paving the way for other young players at the club. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, however, stated that the youngsters are not expected to carry the team on their shoulders, as they are still undergoing gradual development. 'We started working with these youngsters last year, but Mabena was injured,' said Cardoso during the launch of the Betway Premiership this week. 'Letlhaku has been with us. 'That's the way we've been doing things — following procedures that we believe are right for developing youngsters, and teaching them the tools they need at a professional level. 'These are things they didn't have at Diski or youth level in order to succeed. As the level rises, they need to develop additional skills too. 'We are trying to upgrade them, but obviously there's been great work done by the coaches who worked with them before. 'The challenges are much bigger now. From time to time, we shouldn't expect them to carry the responsibility of a team like Sundowns, though we do expect them to succeed.'
