Milwaukee police officer facing felony for firing gun toward homes, near school

Yahoo22-04-2025

A Milwaukee police officer has been charged with a felony for firing a gun near a school and toward homes three years ago.
Prosecutors say Vashaun Young fired a gun twice toward two homes while driving late at night through the 2300 block of West Burleigh Street on March 20, 2022. The 36-year-old man has been an officer for about five years and is on full suspension from the Milwaukee Police Department, according to a press release.
The gunfire occurred within 1,000 feet of the Nova High School at 2320 W. Burleigh St. and occurred while Young was off duty, according to prosecutors.
According to a criminal complaint:
The investigation began in March when a Milwaukee police detective reviewed an 11-second cellphone video which showed Young driving with a handgun in his hand. As Young drives, he fires the gun toward the two homes.
Prosecutors write he did not appear to be looking in the direction of his gun fire and, afterwards, began singing.
In an interview with investigators, Young confirmed he was the man in the video.
Police investigators also confirmed the shooting through Shotspotter, a controversial audio detection technology that triangulates where gunshots occur, and police dispatch records.
Young is charged with endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon. If convicted, he could be sentenced up to 17 years and six months in prison and fined up to $25,000.
Young is scheduled for an initial court appearance on May 12.

Woman pleads guilty to aggravated robbery at Urbana car dealership

Editor's Note: Video aired in 2023, after police arrested multiple people in connection to the armed robbery at Crispin Auto. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Nearly two years after the crime occurred, a woman has pleaded guilty for her role in an armed robbery at an Urbana dealership in 2023. On June 7, 2023, a Crispin Auto employee was robbed at gunpoint and a car was stolen. The next day multiple people were arrested in a McLean County town. Police officials said the car they were driving in was stolen from an Urbana dealership. Michaella Campbell pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery on Monday. She was ordered to serve 48 months of probation, 180 days in the Champaign County Correctional Center (with credit for 145 days previously served) and 100 hours of public service work. If Cook County approves, the probation will be served in their jurisdiction. WCIA previously reported that surveillance video obtained after the aggravated robbery shows the incident started with a test drive involving an employee and two White women. When the three returned to Crispin Auto, two Black men were recorded on surveillance footage running up to the car as the employee was getting out. One pointed a gun to the back of the employee's head and shoved her out of the way. Seconds later, the same employee was pepper sprayed by one of the women before she got in the car with the other suspects and drove away. Third defendant in U of I pro-Palestine protest pleads guilty to misdemeanor Three other people were arrested alongside Campbell, according to the Urbana Police Department. This included Michael Roberts, Deandre Young and an unnamed female juvenile. Roberts and Young previously pleaded guilty, in June and December of 2024 respectively, to aggravated robbery. They each received 48 months of probation, and a 180-day jail sentence. Roberts received 366 days credited for time served, while Young received 545 days credited for time served. Authorities in Washington state search for Pewaukee native whose daughters were found dead

WENATCHEE, Wash. - Police in Washington state have begun a manhunt for a Pewaukee native suspected of killing his three daughters there. A warrant has been issued for Travis Decker, 32, for three counts each of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, the Wenatchee Police Department said in a June 3 news release. The girls — Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5 — were found dead in Chelan County on June 2, three days after they were reported missing. Decker was still being sought as part of an investigation that began May 30, when he failed to return the three girls to their mother under a custodial arrangement. Wenatchee police attempted to get the Washington State Patrol to issue an Amber Alert, but circumstances did not warrant a child-abduction alert at that time, according to the release. According to police, Decker has been living mostly out of his pickup truck, staying occasionally in motels and campgrounds. When the girls were reported missing, authorities — including Wenatchee police, Chelan County sheriff deputies, detectives and a Homeland Security helicopter — began searching those area businesses and sites, and also used Flock surveillance cameras to try to trace his vehicle's path. Decker's GMC Sierra truck was eventually located at about 3:45 p.m. June 2 near the Rock Island Campground, in Chelan County, but neither Decker nor his daughters were in it. Shortly thereafter, the girls' bodies were discovered in that vicinity. Police offered no specifics about how they died or precisely where they were found. Authorities added that Decker, who has extensive military training, is considered to pose "a significant risk." It was not known if he was armed with any weapons. Anyone with information was asked to call 911. Wenatchee Police Capt. Brian Chance, in a phone interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, indicated that Decker has not been formally charged with murder or kidnapping. The court-issued warrant indicates, however, that there is probable cause on the charges for his arrest. Chance added that that the Chelan County Sheriff's Office will be the lead agency in the investigation. Decker was a member of a standout 2010 Pewaukee wrestling team, wrestling in the state finals that year.
