Messi appears likely to play against Minnesota United on Saturday

Yahoo09-05-2025

It's looking increasingly likely that soccer fans who shelled out big bucks for a chance to see Lionel Messi take the Allianz Field pitch will get their chance on Saturday.
Minnesota United are set to host Messi's Inter Miami side in MLS action this weekend in perhaps one of the biggest soccer games ever played in the state. Widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, Messi joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023. This will be the first time the Loons and Miami have played each other since Minnesota lost 2-1 at Miami in June of 2022.
Michelle Kaufman, who covers Inter Miami for the Miami Herald, reported earlier on Friday that Miami head coach Javier Mascherano said that star forward Luis Suarez was traveling for "personal reasons" and that an injury update would come later in the day for goalkeeper Drake Callender.
With Messi not being mentioned in that update, and Miami having their first full week of training since mid-April, it appears likely that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner will suit up to take on the Loons on Saturday.
Neither Messi nor Suarez appeared on the team's Matchday 12 Status Report, leaving open the possibility of both playing Saturday at Allianz Field. Messi was featured in the team's Instagram story of players arriving to the team plane taking off for Minnesota.
Of note, however, is that Miami are set for a midweek game in California before returning home to take on Orlando City the following Sunday. Balancing the quick turnarounds poses the risk that Messi doesn't take the field on Saturday. But with Minnesota sitting in second place in the West (San Jose sit 10th) and Orlando being a conference foe, it's entirely possible Mascherano puts out a full-strength squad at Allianz Field before going with a rotated squad on Wednesday in San Jose.
Since joining Miami in the summer of 2023, Messi has scored 43 goals and added 25 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions for Miami. So far this season, he has scored four goals and added two assists in seven league appearances, adding another five goals and one assist during the team's run to the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals.
The Loons are coming off the back of a 1-0 win over Louisville City in the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday. Minnesota used a squad heavily featuring players from the MNUFC2 squad to see out that win, deciding to keep their typical starters rested ahead of this weekend's clash with Miami.
The Loons will follow up their game on Saturday with a trip to Texas to take on the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday before returning home to take on St. Louis City twice in four days, once in league play and another time in U.S. Open Cup play.
Saturday's game begins at 3:30 p.m. CT at Allianz Field and can be seen on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV, and heard locally on the 1500 ESPN radio broadcast.

World Cup host city organizers acknowledge immigration crackdown may impact next year's tournament

(AP Photo/Ronald Blum) NEW YORK (AP) — Philadelphia's host city executive for the 2026 World Cup says organizers accept that an immigration crackdown by President Donald Trump's administration may be among the outside events that impact next year's tournament. "There are certainly things that are happening at the national level, the international level, there are going to be geopolitical issues that we don't even know right now that are going affect the tournament next year, so we recognize that we're planning within uncertainty,' Meg Kane said Monday at a gathering of the 11 U.S. host city leaders, one year and two days ahead of the tournament opener. Advertisement The World Cup will be played at 16 stadiums in the U.S., Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19 next year, a tournament expanded to 48 nations and 104 games. All matches from the quarterfinals on will be in the U.S., with the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. 'Whether it's the Olympics, whether it's a World Cup, whether it's a Super Bowl, you name it, anytime you've got a major international sporting event, geopolitics is going to have a role,' said Alex Vasry, CEO of the New York/New Jersey host committee. Kane said the host committees must adapt to decisions made by others. 'One of the things that I think we all recognize is that we have to be really good at operating within that uncertainty,' Kane said. 'I think for each of our cities, we want to be prepared to make any person that is coming and makes the decision to come to the United States or come to this World Cup feel that they are welcome. We do not play a role necessarily in what is happening in terms of the decisions that are made.' Advertisement Trump's travel ban on citizens from 12 countries exempted athletes, coaches, staff and relatives while not mentioning fans. 'We allow for FIFA to continue having constructive conversations with the administrations around visas, around workforce, around tourism,' Kane said. FIFA is running the World Cup for the first time without a local organizing committee in the host nation. Asked in late April whether FIFA president Gianni Infantino was available to discuss the tournament, FIFA director of media relations Bryan Swanson forwarded the request to a member of the media relations staff, who did not make Infantino available. Legislation approved by the House of Representatives and awaiting action in the Senate would appropriate $625 million to the Federal Emergency Management Agency 'for security, planning, and other costs related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.' Advertisement The 11 U.S. host committees have been consulting with each other on issues such as transportation for teams and VIPs, and for arranging fan fests. At the last major soccer tournament in the U.S., the 2024 Copa America final at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, started 82 minutes late after fans breached security gates. 'Certainly we were not involved in the planning or the logistics for that particular match,' said Alina Hudak, CEO of the Miami World Cup host committee. She said local police 'have done an extensive review of the after-action reports related to that in collaboration with the stadium and so all of the things that happened are in fact being reviewed and addressed and I can assure you that everything is being done within our power to make sure that the appropriate measures are being placed, the appropriate perimeters.' ___ AP soccer:

Ex-NASCAR star Danica Patrick sounds off on trans athlete debate amid Simone Biles-Riley Gaines feud

Former NASCAR Cup Series star Danica Patrick added her two cents after Simone Biles fired off a personal attack against Riley Gaines in social media posts. Biles called out Gaines after the former All-American NCAA swimmer criticized Minnesota high school softball officials for turning off comments on a post celebrating the team that won the state championship with a transgender girl pitcher. Patrick wrote on Instagram on Sunday that she believed "common sense will prevail." "But until then, I am grateful for people like Riley Gaines who are making sure no one gets away with it. Not to mention the fact that she actually lived it," she wrote, via the New York Post. "Defending men in women's sports is the woke mind virus and/or another issue that requires therapy. Either way, it is so irrational." Biles sparked the feud with Gaines on Friday night. "@Riley_Gaines_ You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser," Biles wrote on X. "You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! "But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!" Gaines responded to Biles' attack. "This is so disappointing. My take is the least controversial take on the planet," Gaines wrote in response to Biles' post. "Simone Biles being a male-apologist at the expense of young girls' dreams? Didn't have that on my bingo card. "Maybe she could compete in pommel horse and rings in 2028." Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Riley Gaines reveals gymnast sister's reaction to Simone Biles' personal attack

Riley Gaines revealed in the latest episode of her podcast what her sister thought of Simone Biles' personal attack on her as the debate over trans athletes in women's and girls' sports escalated. Neely Gaines is an elite-level gymnast and was a Tennessee state champion in 2023. Riley Gaines spoke on OutKick's "Gaines for Girls" podcast about how they would work out together early in the mornings even with her younger sister's hectic schedule. Gaines said that her sister is a huge fan of Biles but the Olympic great's social media posts aimed at the former NCAA All-American swimmer stunned her. "So, I saw her this morning and she almost had tears in her eyes with this internal dilemma that she was facing," Gaines said. "She looks up to me so much as I would imagine many younger sisters do to their older sisters. She always tells me, 'I want to be just like you.' She's as fit as can be. "… But she loves Simone Biles and she saw me this morning and she's like, 'Riley, like, I thought you guys were on the same team. I thought you and Simone were fighting for the same things and amplifying and promoting the idea of women in sports what this looks like.' And she said, 'Clearly, you guys are not.' She said it was all her gym could talk about – how awful Simone Biles treated me and the message that she sent to those young girls. It breaks my heart." Biles went after Gaines as the fairness in women's sports advocate reacted to a transgender pitcher competing in the Minnesota state softball championship.
