Stokes seeks dominant comeback as all-rounder
Among the big question marks for England ahead of a packed upcoming home summer, is the return to fitness of red-ball skipper Ben Stokes.
Stokes was confirmed as the England captain for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe starting May 21, which will be followed by a five-Test series against India starting June 20 - marking the beginning of the next ICC World Test Championship cycle.
There are doubts on whether the 33-year-old can go full-throttle as an all-rounder after recovering from a nasty hamstring injury during the Hamilton Test in New Zealand back in December.

England players reflect on Ben Stokes' finest moment - and even New Zealand have good things to say about the world-class all-rounder at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022
Stokes however, is confident he can make a roaring comeback for England in whites.
"I feel great. Training and playing are completely different. No matter what you do at training, you cannot replicate the intensity your body is put through in a game,' he told Sky Sports.
'As excited as I am to get back on the field I do know it's going to be different to my training.
"But in terms of my role as a player, that full seamer, batting at six, trying to dominate every situation I find myself whether I've got a bat or ball in my hand is what I want to get back doing out on the field, on the biggest stage.
'I know I've done it before, it's something I'm very confident in myself, I can do (it)."
Elaborating on what he believes was 'one of the longest rehab periods of his career', the England captain shared that he is at the back end of his recovery process.
"I always work hard," Stokes said. "My ethos when I'm injured is I come back fitter than I was before I got injured.
"I've worked incredibly hard on all aspects of everything, from my cricket to fitness, and know I'm going to be in a position when I am back on the field to potentially be in physically the best possible shape I have been in."
"I'm not fully through that yet but we're at the back end of the four-month period, and I'm excited to get back to playing this summer."
Stokes has been appointed captain of a 13-member squad for the Test against Zimbabwe - the first between the two countries in England since 2003.

Archer back in England Test squad after four-year absence
Paceman Jofra Archer has been named in England's squad for the second Test against India after an absence of more than four years. The 30-year old fast bowler, hampered by injuries during his career, has played just 13 Tests and none since February 2021. His most recent match for England was in March against South Africa in a one-day international at the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Archer returned to first-class action for his English county team Sussex for the first time in four years on Sunday, taking a single wicket in the drawn match against Durham. He admitted returning to red-ball cricket was a mental challenge but said he was ready for Test cricket. "Yeah. I guess so," he told the BBC. "I just want to get through the game. I'm glad I've finished a day of four-day cricket." Ben Stokes's team secured a thrilling five-wicket win on Tuesday in the series opener against India at Headingley. Archer's addition on Thursday was the only change to the squad for next week's second Test in Birmingham. The Barbados-born player burst onto the scene in 2019, hailed as a key weapon for England in their search for genuine pace to unsettle opponents. He bowled the decisive super over in England's World Cup win over New Zealand at Lord's in 2019 and took 22 wickets in four Tests that followed against Australia in the drawn Ashes series. But Archer was dogged by an elbow injury first sustained in 2020 that required multiple operations and had to work his way back from a recurring stress fracture in his back, first sustained in 2022. He was ruled out of England's recent ODI series against the West Indies with a thumb injury sustained while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. Archer has taken 42 Test wickets in his 13 Tests at an average of 31. Warwickshire batter Jacob Bethell and bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, who did not feature at Headingley, have retained their places in the squad for the second Test, which starts at Edgbaston on July 2. England squad Ben Stokes (capt), Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wkt), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.

England urged to be patient with Archer for second India Test
Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace had a good view of Archer's red-ball return and the highly-rated mentor echoed Vaughan's sentiments upon erring on the side of caution with the right-armer's immediate return to the Test arena. England play the second most amount of matches during this ICC World Test Championship cycle and have a highly-anticipated five-match Ashes series at the end of this year to consider when plotting Archer's return. "He bowled with good pace, good accuracy and his body's in good shape which is fantastic," Farbrace said of Archer's efforts against Durham. "We would all love to see Jofra playing for England because he makes England a much better team, and he would give them a much better chance of winning the big series. "But let's look after him, let's be careful with him. The conversation we'd had (with England) was that he would play in this game, and then we'd reassess. "All I will report back to them is that he bowled nicely, he looks like he's in good rhythm, he's bowled 18 overs and it's up to them whether they pick him." The second Test between England and India commences in Birmingham from July 2.
