Rebel Uncle, Rebel Nephew: Tale Of 2 NCP Foundation Day Events In Pune

Pune: The final phase of the 1990s marked a turning point in Maharashtra's political history. For the first time, the state saw a Shiv Sena-BJP coalition in power, while the Congress faced a major setback with one of its strongest leaders walking out over differences with the high command. That leader was Sharad Pawar. In his rebellion, he took along a band of young leaders from across the state, each rooted in different regions and sectors like education, agriculture, and cooperatives. Among them was a relatively young but prominent face: Ajit Pawar, his nephew. Though not senior in age or hierarchy, Ajit commanded attention for both his lineage and his prompt, unorthodox style of leadership. Little did the 40-year-old leader know that decades later, he would not only challenge his uncle's authority but also lay claim to the very party Sharad Pawar had founded, with the same symbol, and backed by many of the senior leaders who once rebelled with his uncle. Fast forward to June 10, 2025. Ajit Pawar's NCP (AP) is nearly two years old. Yet, he too will celebrate the 26th foundation day of the Nationalist Congress Party-thanks to the Election Commission of India's recognition of his faction as the official NCP. The contrasting scenes at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sports Complex in Pune reflect the mood and political positioning of both factions in the state. At Bal Gandharva in Shivajinagar, not more than 50 people - mostly local party workers - were seen quietly preparing for the big day. A small mandap was set up, and modest arrangements were in place by the afternoon. "It is a very happy moment, but also one of curiosity. The party has been in power and opposition. In the next four months, we have local body elections coming up. Pawar saheb will give a good message for the party and the MVA," said NCP (SP) Pune chief Prashant Jagtap. Ten kilometres away, the preparations were grander at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sports Complex. Pink banners covered the venue. Over 100 workers were busy with final touches, under the supervision of 35-year-old Parth Pawar, the elder son of Ajit Pawar. "Tomorrow, the party is celebrating 26 years. Our leader, Ajit Pawar, will be addressing us. Sunil Tatkare and Parth Pawar contributed to this programme. Fifty thousand people from across the state are expected," said Anand Paranjpe, chief spokesperson of the NCP (AP). The Big Question What makes this year's celebration nationally significant is the buzz around a possible merger between the two factions of the NCP. Sharad Pawar has delegated the decision to his daughter, Supriya Sule, while the Ajit Pawar faction is awaiting an official proposal. "If Pawar had to go with the BJP, he would have gone in 2014. Even in 2019, there was an attempt. If we had to go, we would have gone with Ajit Dada earlier. Sharad Pawar has spent more time in the opposition than in power-he has never aligned with the BJP. People like me are sure it's not going to happen. No discussion about party merger has happened, or will happen," said Mr Jagtap. On the other hand, the Ajit Pawar faction - fresh off a victory in the Vidhan Sabha - is optimistic about a flood of new entries. "After tomorrow's program, there are going to be a lot of additions. A lot of people want to work with Ajit Dada. Many will be on the ground. A different message will be given by our leader-things will become clear soon. Many are ready to join us," said Suraj Chavan, NCP (AP) spokesperson. The Upcoming Civic Polls Beyond the merger rumours, the Foundation Day also kicks off preparations for the upcoming local body elections, long overdue in the state. Pune, in particular, remains a stronghold for both factions. "The 'Ladki Bahin Yojana' isn't reaching people, inflation is up -we're paying more, but getting the same money back. It's been two months since anyone received funds. Petrol prices, unemployment, high school fees, and expensive bus tickets are all issues we'll be taking up," said Dilshad Akhtar from NCP (SP). The Ajit Pawar faction, too, sees this event as a stepping stone toward civic poll strategies. "Directions for the upcoming elections will be given by the party chief," said Anand Paranjpe.

Google battling ‘fox infestation' on roof of £1bn London office

It is intended to be an ultra-modern central London office that will serve Google for decades, but the new £1bn headquarters is beset by one of humanity's oldest-known pests: foxes. The canines have taken over the rooftop garden of the new 'landscraper' in King's Cross and had an impact on construction – although the company stressed it was 'minimal'. The infestation, first reported by the newsletter London Centric, was confirmed by sources familiar with the construction. One told the Guardian it had been a rolling three-year saga and said some foxes had begun to dig burrows in the perfectly manicured grounds. 'There's a little hole in the garden where one lives,' they said. 'We've seen her all around the building – one second she's on the fifth floor, the next she's on the garden floor. No one has been able to catch her.' Others said they have seen fox poo on the grounds of the Thomas Heatherwick-designed building. Mosh Latifi, a co-director of the London-based pest control firm EcoCare, said they could be living off rats. 'Foxes thrive quite well on rodents – we don't live more than three metres away from the nearest rat,' he said, adding that he had also witnessed foxes in building sites scouring for food left behind by workers. Leaky pipes, or even generous handouts from local businesses, could be sustaining the skulk, according to another London pest control expert, who did not wish to be named. 'London is a big playground for foxes – they will go absolutely anywhere,' they said. A Google spokesperson said: 'Fox sightings at construction sites are pretty common, and our King's Cross development is no exception. While foxes have been occasionally spotted at the site, their appearances have been brief and have had minimal impact on the ongoing construction.' According to a search using the firm's own search engine, the best way to get rid of foxes is to remove food sources, install secure fencing and fill in any gaps. It is not the first time a pricey London building has had such a problem. In 2011, a fox called Romeo was discovered living in the Shard. He survived by living off scraps left by construction workers. Romeo was captured and, after a checkup, released back on to the streets of London. Facebook had to contend with a family of foxes at its Menlo Park headquarters in San Francisco. They were eventually honoured on the social media site – being granted a set of stickers on its Messenger app. Plans for the new Google building were announced in 2013, as its first completely owned and designed company site outside the US. The 11-storey building will accommodate up to 7,000 employees. The 300-metre rooftop garden runs along the length of the building and encompasses the seventh to eleventh floors. It's believed that 40,000 tonnes of soil has been brought to support 250 trees, with a running track winding through them. The garden was designed to accommodate bees, bats, birds and butterflies. It features a space for dining, deckchairs and a fitness area. It also has an indoor pool. The nearly 1m sq ft building has been under construction since 2018, and is estimated to be completed later this year. In 2022, a topping-off ceremony which featured non-alcoholic Pimm's and luxury canapés was attended by Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, and Keir Starmer, whose Holborn and St Pancras constituency includes the office. 'This project represents a real vote of confidence in London, in our communities and in our flourishing tech sector,' Khan said at the time.

Mumbai NCLT allows 90-day extension of insolvency resolution for Lavasa Corp

Mumbai: The Mumbai bench of National Company Law Tribunal ( NCLT ) has allowed a 90-day extension in the ongoing consolidated corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) of Lavasa Corp beginning May 29. The planned city project is undergoing a fresh CIRP after the NCLT, in September 2024, directed that the entire process be restarted, following the successful bidder's failure to implement the approved resolution plan within the specified time frame. The company has admitted liabilities of more than ₹6,642 crore, while the erstwhile successful bidder, Darwin Platform Infrastructure , had proposed to pay ₹1,814 crore. "We are of the view that the present application deserves to be allowed," the division bench of judicial member Ashish Kalia and technical member Sanjiv Dutt observed on June 2. "Since the CIRP is at an advanced stage and resolution plans have already been submitted by PRAs (prospective resolution applicants), which are required to be considered by the CoC (committee of creditors), the extension is being sought in the interest of value maximisation and to ensure that the objectives of the Code ( Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code ) are duly met." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 모공각화증, 저는 집에서 이렇게 해결했어요 (전후사진) 현명한소비자 Undo
