IND vs ENG: Time to turn to Kuldeep Yadav as India's bowling unit looks for answers
It is tough to be Kuldeep Yadav, essential enough to be picked in most Indian Test squads but deemed unnecessary as the morning of the match dawns. The Leeds Test that India lost to England by five wickets is only the latest example.
The left-arm wrist spinner made his debut back in March 2017 against Australia in Dharamshala. Since then, he has played a paltry 13 matches across nine series. Twice he has been the player of the match only to not play the subsequent tie. In fact, he has featured in more than one fixture in the same series just two times.

There is a combination of factors at play. If at home, the superior batting returns of R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel put paid to his chances, the reluctance to include more than one spinner in overseas XIs has held him back.
All of this was supposed to change in the new, post-Ashwin era of Indian cricket. With Mohammed Shami not match-fit and Jasprit Bumrah unable to play for long stretches, Kuldeep's attacking nous and wicket-taking ability – even under batting-friendly conditions – were expected to be prized and cherished.
Yet, in Headingley last week, on a mostly flat and dry pitch, Kuldeep warmed the bench. The irony was that the last time India played England, in Dharamshala in March 2024, Kuldeep was adjudged the best player as he ran through a batting order that had Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root and Ben Stokes.
After the Leeds shellacking, there is heightened clamour to draft Kuldeep in. Social media chatter can be bereft of depth, but there is a good case to be made ahead of the Birmingham Test starting July 2.
The Edgbaston strip is expected to be as true and good for batting as Headingley. It has also been an unusually dry summer in England, and local weather reports are predicting a heat wave from July 1. Though rain is always in the air in the British Isles, temperatures in the West Midlands are expected to hover around 30 degrees.
More than this, Kuldeep's skill is not limited by the conditions. In the 2024 home series in India, England struggled against the 30-year-old on fair wickets. And in the first Test here, as well as Duckett – and to an extent Stokes – played, the southpaws did not trust their defence against fellow left-arm spinner Jadeja, a potential cue.

The only thing that may go against Kuldeep is that his presence lengthens the tail, for he will have to bat at No. 8, a place higher than his usual slot. But he is no disaster with the willow.
In his player-of-the-match effort against Bangladesh in Chattogram, he scored a career-best 40 after coming in at 293 for seven. Then, in the Ranchi Test against England last year, he staged a spectacular rescue-act alongside Dhruv Jurel, making an important 28 after coming in at 177 for seven. More than the runs, he batted time on both occasions, eating up 114 and 131 deliveries, respectively.
Above all, it is a no-brainer that Kuldeep is among the four best bowlers in this Indian touring party to England, along with Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Jadeja. Surely, there should be a place for him?

I am still saying that as much as we do for Rohit Sharma, or Virat Kohli, or Sachin Tendulkar, we don't do the same for Jassi. Definitely more than what a bowler usually has. He's got a lot of respect. He's got a lot of fans. A lot of people love him. I am his number one fan. Maybe his wife could be number one, competing for it. I am his number one fan," Ashwin further said. One of the trickiest things for a batter while facing Bumrah is his action. Bumrah's bowling style does make it difficult for batters to read him, but for Ashwin, it's the pacer's execution that made him his No. 1 fan. "He is on a different pedestal. He is in a different world. And the problem is, it's not about the uniqueness of his action. It is about the quality of execution. How does he execute? The way he troubled Joe Root in the first innings, proper. Joe Root was not able to pick the length. The ball was a little far. He could have played the rest of the bowlers in the backfoot, would have tapped it to third man. But not to Bumrah. "He came forward. Because he was worried about the ball nipping back in. And he didn't pick the length. He chased it a little. It went in the slip. He is just a fabulous bowler. The ball of Zak Crawley in the first innings, how many can he bowl that? He is almost past the vertical. From there, he dropped it in the middle stump. He has taken that out. That needs great awareness, great wrist position, quality execution, and an unbelievable amount of work to try and keep his body in that shape to do this," Ashwin added. "He is on a different plane altogether. And I would be very proud to say I played with Jassi. I batted against Jassi. I was in a team with Jassi. And I have seen some fabulous victories. And I have played together with him. He is one of the legends. He is right up there. If not, better than some of the batters in our country."

Rishabh Pant has established himself as one of Team India's best players in Test cricket. The 27-year-old became the first Asian wicket-keeper batter, and the first Indian batter, to score centuries in both innings of a Test match in England, doing so in the recently-concluded first Test between India and England. However, Pant's rise to stardom has been far from rosy. Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja has narrated an incident from 2015, when Pant was 18 years old, giving us an insight into his mentality after he had been dropped from Delhi's Ranji Trophy squad. Pant did not find a spot in Delhi's Ranji Trophy team at the start of the 2015/16 season, ahead of which Ajay Jadeja had quit as the head coach of the side. Jadeja revealed that he had insisted Pant to attend Delhi's training session despite missing out on their Ranji Trophy squad. However, Pant's clear-cut reply took him by surprise. "I will never forget our first meeting. I was the coach of Delhi for a few days before quitting (in 2015). The selectors and captain kept arguing over the players they wanted to have in the team. Pant wasn't picked," Jadeja narrated. "I still told him (Pant) to attend the practice session for the Ranji Trophy, telling him that it doesn't matter that you've not been selected, there will be a chance in future. They've got to play Kuldeep Yadav…it is an absolute no-brainer: Michael Clarke
Indian bowling attack in the first Test has looked toothless. Despite the heroics of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj looked off-colour, Prasidh Krishna could not find the ideal length for the placid Headingly surface and Shardul Thakur, who has the knack of picking wickets, could not wield his magic. Although Ravindra Jadeja did find a bit of grip and turn for his wily left-arm spin, he lacked a partner in crime to support him and provide the X-factor. Former Australian cricketer Michael Clarke said he will play Kuldeep Yadav going forward in the series. 'Bowling-wise, I do not want to be hard on any individual, but I think they've got to play Kuldeep Yadav. I think it is an absolute no-brainer. I think he's a wicket-taker and would have offered a lot more than what he saw the attack do in this Test,' Clarke said on the Beyond23 Podcast. 'India have done this for a while. They care so much about extra batting or stacking the batting deep, and they are willing to risk picking the number one spinner to do that. I think to win in England, you've got to look to pick 20 wickets,' Clarke added. Former England cricketer Nick Knight, speaking to this publication about the dry summer in England this season, said he will also look to play Kuldeep. 'I would be looking for every opportunity to play Kuldeep Yadav. England will find it hard against Kuldeep. If Kuldeep is on top of his game, that could be a defining moment in the series, or moments, because England likes to be aggressive. When you want to be aggressive, you have to be certain about which way the ball is turning. If there is a little bit of assistance from the pitch, Kuldeep will be able to bowl all his varieties,' he said.
