Man in US gets 8 years in prison for sending weapons to N Korea

A Chinese national has been sentenced to eight years in prison for smuggling firearms and other military items to North Korea, the US justice department said.Shenghua Wen, 42, received around $2m (£1.5m) from North Korean officials to ship the items from California, according to a statement from the agency on Monday.A resident of Ontario, California, Wen has been detained since December 2024. He pleaded guilty in June to conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and being an illegal agent of a foreign government.Wen's case shines a light on the various ways in which North Korea circumvents international sanctions on its arms trade.
Describing Wen as an "illegal alien", the justice department said he entered the US on a student visa in 2012 and remained in the country after his visa expired in December 2013."Prior to entering the United States, Wen met with officials from North Korea's government at a North Korean embassy in China," the agency said. "These government officials directed Wen to procure goods on behalf of North Korea."According to the justice department, two North Korean officials reached Wen via an online messaging platform in 2022 and told him to smuggle firearms and other goods from the US to North Korea. In 2023 he shipped at least three containers of firearms from the Port of Long Beach to China, with their final destination being North Korea. He filed false export information about the container's contents. One such container, which he had reported as carrying a refrigerator, arrived in Hong Kong in January 2024 before being sent to Nampo, North Korea. He also purchased a firearms business in Houston with money from a North Korean contact, and drove the weapons from Texas to California, where they were arranged to be shipped.Last September, Wen bought around 60,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition with plans to ship them to North Korea.US authorities also said that Wen obtained "sensitive technology" which he had meant to send to North Korea, such as a chemical threat identification device and a handheld broadband receiver."Wen admitted in his plea agreement that at all relevant times he knew that it was illegal to ship firearms, ammunition, and sensitive technology to North Korea," the justice department said.Under sanctions by the UN Security Council, North Korea is banned from trading arms and military equipment. The US has also imposed its own sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear and ballistic missile activities. But North Korea has developed ways to get around the sanctions. In 2015, the US blacklisted a Singapore-based shipping firm for allegedly supporting illicit arms shipments to North Korea. In 2016, Egyptian authorities intercepted a North Korean ship containing more than 30,000 grenades bound for Egypt. And in 2023, British American Tobacco had to pay more than $600m (£445m) for selling cigarettes to North Korea in violation of the sanctions.

Florida man arrested after trying to retrieve drone ‘carrying drugs' which he crashed into house

A man was arrested after he allegedly crashed his drone carrying drugs into a residential property in Florida. Doorbell camera footage shows Jason Brooks, 49, knocking on the door of a property after the device went down in a back garden on Tuesday (19 August). The property owners were startled when they heard a loud bang at around 1.30am, so went out to investigate where they discovered the drone with bags of methamphetamine and fentanyl attached. The residents called the police, who found Brooks in the property's driveway where he claimed he was searching for a lost drone. Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office then arrested Brooks, who is facing multiple charges including possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell or deliver with a suspected license.

Six Flags' slow summer leads to $100 million in losses as investors launch an investigation into ‘fraud' at parks

After a slow summer for thrill seekers — and $100 million total losses — Six Flags investors have launched an investigation into fraud at the theme park. Los Angeles-based Schall Law Firm says it is investigating whether Six Flags issued false or misleading statements or failed to disclose information pertinent to investors. The lawsuit comes as the amusement park announced its second-quarter financial results earlier this month, which included a devastating $100 million net loss and the news that CEO Richard Zimmerman would step down by the end of the year. Shares were also down 47 percent year to date, according to Morning Brew. While the park's profits plummeted, Six Flags also reported a seven-figure drop in visitors. The park also saw 1.4 million fewer visitors during the second quarter. Despite the North Carolina-based park's losses this year, its competitors, including Disney and Universal, weren't facing similar struggles. Revenue at Disney's domestic parks rose 10 percent year over year in its most recent quarter, and Universal recently opened its $7 billion Epic Universe theme park, according to Morning Brew. Six Flags has made some efforts to turn its financial troubles around, including announcing it would close a park in Maryland and sell the land. Even still, the company recently laid off hundreds of full-time staff following its 2024 acquisition of Cedar Fair, the entertainment company responsible for Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. Schall Law Firm, a national shareholder rights litigation firm, is inviting investors of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation to join the lawsuit. Six Flags did not immediately return The Independent's request for comment on the case, but recently blamed the decrease in visitors on several parks removing winter events and adverse summer weather. "July was a turning point as weather normalized and guests had a chance to experience our new rides and other attractions," a Six Flags spokesperson told Chron. "We're seeing a surge in demand for our parks, and sales of season passes and memberships are climbing fast. While we know we have ground to make up from a tough May and June, these results send a clear message: when the gates are open and the product is strong, people will visit."

Father of NBA superstar Jaylen Brown arrested for attempted murder after 'stabbing man in Vegas parking dispute'

Marselles Brown, the father of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown, was arrested in Las Vegas on Wednesday night for attempted homicide following a parking lot dispute. The 57-year-old former professional boxer was taken into custody by Las Vegas Metro Police on Wednesday following the incident at All American Park. According to officials, the altercation began as an argument over a parking spot before it turned physical and Marselles allegedly stabbed the victim in the stomach. The victim, a local youth coach, was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery. His current condition is unknown. Police say Brown fled the scene but was later tracked down and arrested. He is facing a charge of attempted murder and is due in court Thursday afternoon. Brown, who made his professional boxing debut in 1989, finished his career with a 33-18-1 record, including 25 knockouts. His last recorded fight was nearly a decade ago. Jaylen Brown, 28, is one of the NBA's top stars and helped lead the Boston Celtics to a championship title in 2024. The team has not yet issued a statement on the arrest.
