Maxis aims to link over 100,000 Penang homes with fibre network
KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis has expanded its fibre network in Penang, aiming to connect over 100,000 homes by 2027.
The rollout will cover all districts, focusing on high-demand urban areas like Jelutong, Georgetown, Batu Maung, Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru and key locations in mainland Penang.
The initiative underscores Maxis' long-term commitment to supporting the state's digital agenda towards achieving the Penang 2030 vision of becoming a family-focused, green and smart state.
Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the initiative supports the state's digital agenda towards achieving the Penang 2030 vision to build a smart, green and inclusive state.
"High-quality internet connectivity is a critical driver for education, talent development and economic growth, all of which will further solidify Penang's position as a regional hub for technology and innovation.
"We will continue strengthening our state's digital infrastructure to close the digital divide and ensure every Penangite is equipped to prosper in the future economy," he said.
Maxis chief executive officer Goh Seow Eng said the fibre expansion supports Penang's digital journey, unlocking new opportunities for the people.
"Building our own fibre network gives us full visibility of our service quality, ensuring fast, reliable and secure connectivity our customers can count on," he said.
Maxis' fibre expansion in Penang was also facilitated by the Last Mile Connectivity Guidelines recently introduced by the state government, a first-of-its-kind initiative in Malaysia.
This progressive initiative streamlines pole-sharing guidelines and enables various telecommunications providers to deploy fibre networks more quickly and efficiently across the state.
Maxis currently operates its fibre network spanning over 23,000km across the country, with the capacity to serve more than half a million homes.
Its own-built fibre footprint is complemented by fibre access through other infrastructure providers, expanding the accessibility of its services nationwide.

(Johnshen Lee pic) GEORGE TOWN : All outstanding issues between the federal government and the Penang government regarding the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) have been resolved amicably. Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said he had chaired the meeting with Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow at his ministry in Putrajaya last month and resolved outstanding issues, including the release letter from the state government. 'Physical work will begin soon, in one or two months. So we ask them (the state government) to ensure there is a traffic diversion plan when piling work and construction begins to ensure the project doesn't have a negative impact on road congestion,' he said during a media conference after ending his one-day working visit to Penang today. On Rapid Penang On-Demand service by Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd (Rapid Bus), Loke said the service, which began in phases from August 2024, was running smoothly with 50 vans covering 13 zones in Penang – seven on the island and six in Seberang Perai. 'The average daily users stand at 1,944 people, with an average of 39 passengers per van daily and an average travel time of 16 minutes and a waiting time of 19 minutes,' he said. He added that there were 150 additional drivers to handle the vans to ensure smooth operations and that passengers would enjoy a fare of RM1 per trip.
