Russia And Ukraine Turn To Ground Robots For Frontline Resupply

As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, both sides are facing the same challenges with resupply. The supply lines are long since soldiers are rapidly expending resources at various locations stretched out across the 600-mile front. As the resupply convoys approach the forward locations, they are frequently targeted and destroyed by enemy drones. Similar to other challenges in the war, both sides are adapting new tactics and technologies to address this issue. In this case, they are both turning to ground robots to deliver resupply.
The use of ground robots for resupply makes practical sense, especially given the manpower shortages of both countries. Instead of using soldiers to run resupply convoys, the soldiers can be allocated towards more direct combat roles. Meanwhile, if enemy drones destroy a ground robot, they only lose a relatively inexpensive system that can be easily repaired or replaced.
Further, these resupply robots are able to leverage the advances in robotics and autonomy that both countries have honed from their ongoing battle for aerial drone supremacy. The algorithms are somewhat less complicated, since ground robots only move in two dimensions and can be programmed to follow a network of roads to a specific location. These systems can rely on basic sensors to stay on the road and use distance traveled to determine when to turn, reducing the need for external signals that can be jammed, a key feature on this battlefield.
Russia initially led in deploying ground robots for resupply, driven by Ukraine's extensive use of aerial drones and Russia's own high rate of equipment losses. One of the newest Russian platforms is the Volchanin, under development by the Volsk Military Logistics Institute for resupply and casualty evacuation. Russia has also been using the Courier, which was designed to carry a large payload allowing for both combat and logistics roles. Russia has a number of other wheeled and tracked robotic platforms in their arsenal as well.
A social media post from December 2023 shows Russian troops training on resupply with fairly simple wheeled robots. In the video, soldiers load the four-wheeled robot with supplies, which are transported across the battlefield to a waiting soldier, who unloads them and places a casualty onto the robot. Another post from last year shows a tracked robot loaded with resupply being targeted by Ukrainian drones in the Donetsk Oblast. Last month, Ukrainian forces released a compilation of videos on social media of Russian resupply robots, operating around Chasiv Yar. These ground robots are of various types, including both tracked and wheeled, with one featuring an anti-drone cage. These robots are noticeably larger and moving faster than the ones in the earlier videos, indicating more sophisticated systems.
Similarly, Ukraine has a number of ground robots in its arsenal, including the domestically, produced Sirko-S1 and Volia-E, both of which entered service last summer. The payloads for these ground robots are each around 150-200 kg, such that they can be used for casualty evacuation as well. Ukraine has also received a number of ground robots in foreign aid packages, including the German Gereon RCS vehicles, Estonian THeMIS robot, and the Czech Trail-Blazer.
Recently, Ukraine began deploying the Targan robotic system, which is specifically designed to support frontline logistics. Developed by Ukrainian engineers under the Brave1 Initiative, the Targan was approved by the Ministry of Defense in late 2024. It uses a silent electric motor and large rubber wheels to carry up to 200 kg across rough terrain. There are multiple versions of the Targan in service, with the baseline model having a range of 20 km.
These ground robots have become a regular presence along the front. A recent Ukrainian social media post included images of ground robots being loaded with resupply by the 93rd Mechanized Brigade, which is operating around Pokrovsk. Meanwhile, a recent Russian social media post shows two Ukrainian resupply robots moving at a fast speed through Chasiv Yar, prior to them being targeted by a Russian drone. The Ukrainians seem to be particularly being used in urban areas, where resupply is especially challenging.
Both Russia and Ukraine will likely increase their usage of ground robots for logistical operations, especially as they face increasing manpower shortages. Similar to their aerial counterparts, future iterations will likely become faster, stronger, and more autonomous over time. They will also likely move into other warfighting domains, especially for casualty evacuation, which many of these drones are already equipped for.
Although both countries have showcased armed versions of these robots, their usage in direct combat roles will likely be limited. On the Russia-Ukraine battlefield, all systems have to be able to operate with their signals degraded by electronic warfare equipment. While resupply can be done with only limited user interactions and limited control system, shooting requires a direct user feed, which is susceptible to jamming.
The use of robots has become a defining characteristic of the Russia-Ukraine war. While ground robots may not achieve the same notoriety as their aerial counterparts, their role is equally important. If the soldiers do not get resupplied, they cannot hold their positions. Their current usage is shaping the current front lines, and their role will likely increase as the war continues.

The leaders of the program believe its benefits will go beyond efficiency and being better for the environment. It should also be a significant source of job growth in the region. With that in mind, the government of Australia awarded the development team half of the program's $3 million budget. This is only the latest use of drone technology to benefit the environment. Trump order seeks to boost U.S. drone industry

June 7 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump is taking aim at drone technology from two directions -- boost the U.S. industry and crack down on malicious activity. Trump on Friday signed executive orders on efforts to spur U.S. production relevant to drone technology, increase U.S. drone security and regulation efforts, and an unleated one to promote design and eventual use of commercial supersonic aircraft. "Unmanned aircraft systems, otherwise known as drones, offer the potential to enhance public safety as well as cement America's leadership in global innovation," an executive order titled Restoring American Airspace Sovereignty read. "But criminals, terrorists, and hostile foreign actors have intensified their weaponization of these technologies, creating new and serious threats to our homeland. Another order, titled Unleashing American Drone Dominance, declares that "building a strong and secure domestic drone sector is vital to reducing reliance on foreign sources, strengthening critical supply chains and ensuring that the benefits of this technology are delivered to the American people." There are more than a million registered drones in the United States, according to the FAA with more than 400,000 commercial drones and more than 350,000 for recreational use. In a press release, the Commercial Drone Alliance said it has "believed that innovation and security are two sides of the same coin. Outdated regulations have long impeded technological innovation and hindered transparency in our airspace." Lisa Ellman, chief executive of the Commercial Drone Alliance, also lauded the executive orders for aiming at both innovation and security simultaneously. "We fully support the long-overdue steps taken by the Trump administration in these Executive Orders -- establishing a framework to scale safe and secure drone operations while enhancing drone security and airspace transparency -- to modernize our domestic drone policy and assure American aviation leadership into the next century of flight," she said in the release. Drone dangers Trump has warned that drones have been used to smuggle drugs across borders, and could threaten large public gatherings, such as the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics, both in the United States. "It is the policy of the United States to ensure control over our national airspace and to protect the public, critical infrastructure, mass gathering events, and military and sensitive government installations and operations from threats posed by the careless or unlawful use of UAS," the security related order reads. Chinese-made drones from companies like DJI or Autel are not outright banned, but the Federal Acquisition Security Council has been called on to "publish a Covered Foreign Entity List ... identifying companies that pose supply chain risks." In 2022, the U.S. Treasury added DJI and seven other companies to its Chinese Military-Industrial Complex list, which indicates some level of national security concern. The includes a ban on U.S.-based companies exporting technology to them. The majority of drones are estimated to be built in China, The New York Times reported. The Justice Department and FAA were told to enforce civil and criminal penalties for drone operators who violate laws or airspace restrictions. There will be grants for state and local law enforcement to access drone-detection and tracking equipment. The Federal Aviation Administration requires all drones weighing more than 0.55 of a pound to be registered, in addition to restricting how high they can be flown without authorization. The Justice Department and FAA were told to more robustly enforce civil and criminal penalties for drone operators who violate laws or airspace restrictions. Grant programs are planned for state and local law enforcement to access drone-detection and tracking equipment., the order also indicates Drone industry growth In his first term, Trump sought to increase the use of drones and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has been directed to promote exports of U.S.-made drones, in addition to federal agencies being ordered to prioritize purchases of them. "The United States must accelerate the safe commercialization of drone technologies and fully integrate UAS into the National Airspace System," the order reads. "The time has come to accelerate testing and to enable routine drone operations, scale up domestic production, and expand the export of trusted, American-manufactured drone technologies to global markets." The order directs the FAA to allow commercial users and public safety officials not to fly drones beyond their range of sight, meaning that a user must be able to see the drone they are operating. "Building a strong and secure domestic drone sector is vital to reducing reliance on foreign sources, strengthening critical supply chains, and ensuring that the benefits of this technology are delivered to the American people," the order says. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy was directed to initiate artificial intelligence tools to assist in and expedite the review of a UAS waiver application, and the Transportation Department was told to develop an Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Pilot Program to accelerate the deployment of safe and lawful eVTOL operations in the United States. Supersonic flight An additional executive order titled "Leading the World in Supersonic Flight" seeks to promise planes that travel at supersonic speeds, which are greater than the speed of sound at approximately 768 mph at sea level, or Mach 1. "The United States stands at the threshold of a bold new chapter in aerospace innovation," the order reads. "For more than 50 years, outdated and overly restrictive regulations have grounded the promise of supersonic flight over land, stifling American ingenuity, weakening our global competitiveness, and ceding leadership to foreign adversaries." The order noted that "advances in aerospace engineering, materials science, and noise reduction now make supersonic flight not just possible, but safe, sustainable, and commercially viable." The order repeals regulations prohibiting cross-country supersonic flights, which for decades have precluded nonmilitary air travel over land at faster-than-sound speeds. The Concorde was manufactured from 1965 to 1979, but are no longer flown by airlines, however, Boom Supersonic and NASA are currently developing new supersonic passenger jets.

France to produce drones in Ukraine, minister says

French automotive and defense companies will produce drones on Ukrainian soil, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced on June 6, Le Monde reported. "We are going to embark on a completely unprecedented partnership where a large French car company – I won't name it because it's up to them to announce it – will join forces with a French defense SME (small to medium-sized enterprise) to equip production lines in Ukraine to be able to produce drones," Lecornu said, as quoted by the newspaper. Lecornu did not specify the types of drones to be produced. He said that, apart from Ukraine, the drones will be also provided "to our own armies… to have ongoing tactical and operational training that reflects the reality." Lecornu also said there is "no need" to send French citizens to work on the production line, since it will be set up in Ukraine, where Ukrainians "are better than us at designing drones and especially at developing the strategies that accompany them." Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has been developing and deploying technological innovations and cutting-edge unmanned systems. Both Ukraine and Russia have increasingly relied on drone warfare, using aerial, naval, and ground-based drones for reconnaissance and combat missions. In late March, presidential advisor Alexander Kamyshin said in an interview with Radio Khartia that Ukrainian manufacturers had the capacity to produce over 5 million FPV drones per year.
