
Surrey hospice development benefits from Guildford crowdfunding
A new hospice development is the latest project to receive funding from a Surrey council's local crowdfunding campaign.Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care is set to replace its building in Farnham with a larger, more modern facility thanks to £52,335 from Guildford Borough Council (GBC) and its Crowdfund Guildford initiative.Jenny Peat, director of income generation at Phyllis Tuckwell, said: "This funding will help us to build a new facility that is fit for the future, helping tens of thousands of people across Surrey in the years to come."Created by the council in partnership with crowdfunding platform Spacehive, Crowdfund Guildford was founded to give community groups the opportunity to "imagine, create, and fund projects that matter to them".
A total of 27 backers pledged money to Phyllis Tuckwell's Crowdfund Guildford campaign.The spring round of funding from Crowdfund Guildford is open until 12 March.Carla Morson, lead councillor for community and organisational development, said: "We want to fund projects that help vulnerable groups, make rural areas better, improve green spaces, encourage people to enjoy nature and improve wellbeing."

Phyllis Tuckwell thanks volunteers for decades of service
A hospice service in Surrey is using Volunteers Week to thank people who have donated their time, some for more than two Tuckwell has sites in Guildford, Farnham and has 653 volunteers, who fill 91 different roles across the Week runs from the 2 to 8 June, with the aim of encouraging more people to offer their services to their communities. Roles range from working in the hospice's shop to providing physiotherapy and complementary therapy, or simply sitting with patients and talking with year, Phyllis Tuckwell organises long service Morpeth, voluntary services manager, said: "This year, we will be celebrating the fantastic contribution of 50 of our volunteers, who have supported us for the milestones of 5, 10 and 20 years."We'd like to say a huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers, whose support is so very much appreciated."Without you, we simply wouldn't be able to provide our vital care - so thank you."

Stoke Park paddling pool reopening delayed over unsafe water
Contaminated water has delayed the reopening of a paddling pool in Stoke Park paddling pool was expected to open on Saturday ahead of the half term school final water testing after resurfacing works revealed it was not yet safe to open the facility, according to Guildford Borough McShane, leader of the local authority, apologised to families, adding: "Your safety and your children's safety is our utmost priority." In a video posted on Facebook, McShane explained: "In the last phases of the water testing, we discovered the water has been contaminated..."So we have taken the decision that it isn't safe to open the paddling pool."I'm really sorry, we are all devastated."McShane said the council had "worked so hard" to get the pool resurfaced and the staffing in place for the scheduled opening but said it would look into what had happened and "put things right". Maksim Fedosov, who has a two-year-old child, told BBC Radio Surrey his family used the pool last said: "It's quite disappointing, especially in the hot weather. It's quite useful."Adrian Fuller, 71, said: "When you start getting the good weather it gets very, very busy down there with the kids. It's a very popular thing."It's absolutely choc-a-block in the good weather." The paddling pool, which typically opens annually from May until September, also suffered opening delays in 2024 due to staffing last underwent a refurbishment in 2022.
