What is GPT-5? OpenAI's latest AI model explained

Artificial Intelligence is dominating the news cycle and it's only getting more powerful, as demonstrated by the release of OpenAI's GPT-5, one of the smartest AI models ever.
Taking advantage of the latest GPT-5 update are ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity, as well as a range of other AI chatbots available to the public.

Previously running on GPT-4, these AI's have now received a major upgrade, with GPT-5 allowing for more complex answers to more complex questions. They also have expanded creation capabilities allowing for better image and video creation.
What is GPT-5?
GPT-5 is OpenAI's latest, and now flagship, AI model. This new version is now the default system for a range of AI chatbots.
OpenAI says GPT-5 is much more intelligent that the previous GPT-4 mode, with major improvements in complex front-end generation.
The major benefits of GPT-5 include enhanced reasoning which provides faster responses to complex questions as well as expanded creation capabilities when it comes to image and video generation.
This also means you can expect more human-like responses when compared to the previous version.
When did GPT-5 get released?
OpenAI announced GPT-5 on August 7, 2025, and was immediately implemented within AI that uses OpenAI's software including ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot.
It was rolled out to a range of AI software that use OpenAI's model straight away, including both free and paid editions of the variety of software.
For those who don't want to use the new GPT-5 model, paid ChatGPT subscribers can still make use of the previous GPT-4 model by adjusting their settings. You might want to consider this as well, as there are a number of users complaining ChatGPT has changed its personality.
What does GPT-5 do?
OpenAI claims that GPT-5 is the smartest, fastest and most useful AI model yet with PHD level thinking which puts expert intelligence right in the palm of your hand. You can use GPT-5 for just about anything including simple admin tasks right down to more complicated image generation depending on what AI you're using.
You can use GPT-5 as a simple chatbot just to ask questions or have a conversation, but there's much more that's possible. Its only limited by its physical interface – while it can't fold clothes for you since it doesn't have working arms or legs, it can tell you exactly how to fold clothes yourself.
GPT-5 is more advanced that its predecessor GPT-4 thanks to a deeper reasoning model which allows it to solve harder problems. Pair this with its new real-time router that can quickly decides on a response based on conversation type, complexity, too needs and your explicit intent within your message and you get a much smarter model which really feels human when you're speaking to it.
Here is a list of everything that is new to GPT-5:
It's free for all users, with those on the free tier getting switched to GPT-5 mini when their main use ends
It will modulate how much reasoning it does on
It can now connect to Gmail and Google Calendar, so it can understand your schedule better (Pro users first)
It's designed to hallucinate less, offer greater reliability in its responses and generally be more dependable
It offers a more natural, less 'AI-like' writing style
Subscribers can alter the color scheme
The Voice mode is coming to all tiers, and you can customize the responses to this (even down to 'only answer with one word')
Study mode is more advanced, where you can 'get personalized, step-by-step help to learn anything'
Which devices support GPT-5?
You can use GPT-5 on a range of platforms from your browser on your PC or Laptop right down to the mobile app on both iOS and Android devices. How you access GPT-5 will be down to which AI you actually choose to use with options like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity.
The apps for these AI's are practically identical to the web version with nearly all of the features you'd find on desktop. There's also an official ChatGPT app for Mac which supports GPT-5 too.
How can I get GPT-5?
You don't need to change or do anything differently in order to use GPT-5. Since being rolled out, ChatGPT has automatically been using GPT-5 for all users so as you continue to use ChatGPT as you normally would, the AI is taking advantage of the new and updated edition.
Users who on paid tiers of ChatGPT such as Plus, Pro and Team also have access to the model picker which allows you to select previous and current versions of the model.
This means you can select GPT-5 if its not already selected as well as take advantage GPT-5 Thinking edition which thinks even deeper about the answers to questions.

If You Get This Voicemail, Your Google Account Is Under Attack

Google has confirmed that user accounts are under attack. And while the spiraling threat from infostealers is now out of control, almost 40% of 'successful intrusions' come from phishing attacks that steal user names and passwords. While Gmail accounts are prized above all, once a hacker has control of your Google account credentials they can access all the Google services you use, as well as any other third-party apps and services that rely on your Google credentials to sign-in. Old school phishing attacks using poorly written messages and emails are being replaced by nicely written, grammatically correct lures courtesy of AI. And when you click a link through to a fake login page, it's now a perfect replica of the real thing. Attacks even include hijacks of Google's own suspicious sign-in warnings and its 'no-reply' email addresses, plus the exploitation of legitimate infrastructure such as Forms, Sites and even Translate. If it's out there, one bad actor or another will try to use it. Courtesy of Redditor anuraggawande, there's even a malicious voicemail doing the rounds — or at least a voicemail notification. 'I received an email claiming I had a 'New Voicemail Notification'. The email included a big 'Listen to Voicemail' button.' The link 'used a legitimate Microsoft Dynamics domain to host the initial page, instantly boosting credibility.' But 'after solving the captcha, the site redirected to a Gmail login clone hosted on the same malicious domain and not to The page was pixel-perfect, ready to steal credentials.' Typically now, this attack looked 'looked professional and harmless, but just as with any message, email or notification from Google or any other provider, you should never log into any website or platform from a link. Always use your regular methods of entry to access your accounts — apps or websites. The other critical advice is to use a non-SMS form of two-factor authentication and to add a passkey. As Google explains, 'passkeys offer users a convenient and secure authentication experience across websites and apps. Unlike passwords, which can be guessed, stolen, or forgotten, passkeys are unique digital credentials tied to a user's device.'

This Growth Stock Is Up 100% in the Last Year, but Still Down 15% From All-Time Highs: Should You Buy Today?

Key Points Shopify is growing quickly as it expands its commerce tools around the globe. It keeps adding new tools for customers, such as cryptocurrency payments and artificial intelligence (AI). Even though the business is great, the stock trades at an expensive valuation. 10 stocks we like better than Shopify › Shopify (NASDAQ: SHOP) is still in the middle of its 2021 hangover, as shares are down 15% from all-time highs set during the COVID-19 pandemic stock market bubble. The stock is up over 100% in the last 12 months, but still has not eclipsed previous highs after going through a brutal drawdown in 2022. At the same time, business performance has been rock-solid if not stellar, as management keeps adding new commerce tools and attracting new businesses to join the platform. With Shopify stock still down from all-time highs, should you buy shares in 2025 for your portfolio? Here's what the numbers say. Steady global expansion As a software and payments provider for online businesses, Shopify has grown to dominate the North American market. Now, it is moving internationally. Last quarter, growth in payments volume for its European division was 42%, outpacing overall growth. The company has built up a best-in-class set of tools for entrepreneurs and businesses of all sizes to sell and process payments online. Last quarter, even Starbucks signed a deal with Shopify, which shows the capabilities of the platform for online shopping. Overall revenue grew 31% year over year in the quarter, with strong growth expected for the rest of the year. Profit margins remain strong, with free cash flow margins of 16% in the quarter. This combination of growth and profitability is impressive and the key reason why Shopify's stock has soared in the last 12 months. As more and more businesses sign up for Shopify's software tools and payment processing, the more growth Shopify will achieve. Add new features such as advertising and the Shop Pay application for consumers, and it looks like growth will continue for many years into the future. AI, crypto, and new products Shopify is embracing new technologies as a way to leverage more usage from its business customers. It now has two artificial intelligence (AI) services called Sidekick and Magic that help analyze trends for a business, create content, and marketing products. Providing more value for enterprises will help customers stay entrenched within the Shopify ecosystem, leading to revenue growth and pricing power. What's more, Shopify is now beginning to expand and accept more forms of payment, such as Circle's stablecoin USDC. This should help with cross-border transactions and make it easier for shoppers who want to pay in different ways on Shopify's e-commerce storefronts. It will not only help drive new payment growth (which directly translates to revenue for Shopify), but also adoption of shopping across borders. On the whole, Shopify is building a huge ecosystem of products for businesses trying to sell things online. Its breadth of tools is unmatched in the software world, which is why so many commerce companies are signing deals with them. Expect this growth to continue for many years, as long as product innovation remains top tier. Should you buy Shopify stock? Shopify is a fast-growing business, but that does not necessarily make the stock a buy. Total revenue was $10 billion over the last 12 months. Revenue growth is expected to be over 20% for the rest of 2025. At the same time, 20%-plus growth cannot continue forever, no matter what company you are. On a long-enough timeline, a growth rate significantly above global economic growth would mean absorbing the entire global economy, which is not going to happen (no matter how good Shopify's commerce tools are). Revenue growth will be strong for many years, but it will eventually slow for Shopify. If Shopify's revenue grows at an average rate of 15% for the next five years, it will reach $20 billion in revenue by 2030. With a gross profit margin of 50%, I believe that Shopify can achieve a 20% net income margin once the business matures. This would turn $20 billion in revenue into $4 billion in annual net earnings five years from now. Today, Shopify has a market cap of $187 billion, which would give the stock a forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of 47 based on these earnings growth projections. Despite how good of a business it is, this nosebleed P/E ratio means investors should avoid Shopify stock after its recent 100% run over the last 12 months.
