A 32-year-old man who had been arrested on suspicion of violating the Stimulants Control Act temporarily escaped from a police station after a police officer dozed off, in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, police said Sunday.
The man, Kohei Takai, was caught after he got about 200 meters from Kawasaki Police Station at around 9:35 a.m. on Saturday, TV Asahi reported. He had turned himself in at a koban (police box) at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, confessing that he had been using stimulants.
According to police, Takai was taken to Kawasaki Police Station where an officer questioned him in an interrogation room. While waiting to be transferred to a cell, he fled the station when the police officer supervising him in the interrogation room dozed off.
Another police officer saw Takai and immediately gave chase and apprehended him.
Kawasaki Police Station Deputy Chief Yoshinari Hagamine said, "We will work to prevent a recurrence of such an incident.'

At around 10:35 a.m. on April 1, Tomohiro Goto allegedly possessing 68 grams of kakuseizai (methamphetamine), 916 grams of marijuana, 229 grams of cocaine and 50 grams of MDMA, or Ecstasy, inside a vehicle parked on a street in Hanno City. The contraband has a street value of 14.5 million yen, the Machida Police Station said. Tomohiro Goto (X) Upon his arrest on suspicion of violating the Stimulants Control Act and the Narcotics Control Act over possession of profit, Goto admitted to the charges. 'I was making a profit by trafficking illegal drugs,' he said. The arrest is not the first for Goto. He was arrested twice in April and May on suspicion of unlawful arrest and confinement, assault and other offenses. According to police, he assaulted and confined a man and his acquaintance with whom he was having financial problems in February. When his car was searched as a part of that investigation in April, the large quantities of meth and the other drugs were found.

KANAGAWSA (TR) – A man who in custody for violating the Stimulants Control Act temporarily escaped from a police station in Kawasaki City on Saturday after a police officer dozed off, reports TV Asahi (May 25). At around 4:30 a.m., suspect Kohei Takai, 32, turned himself in to a police box in Kawasaki City. 'I used kakuseizai yesterday,' he said in referring to methamphetamine. Police then arrested him over the alleged possession of a bag of methamphetamine. After being interrogated at the Kawasaki Police Station, he fled the premises after the police officer supervising him in the interrogation room dozed off. Another officer who noticed immediately gave chase, secured him on the street about 200 meters away and arrested him on suspicion of attempted escape. Takai is said to have admitted to the charges during interrogation. A representative of the Kawasaki Police Station commented, 'We will confirm the facts and work to prevent a recurrence.'
