‘What happened to me should never happen to you': Campaign aims to combat online sex offences against children
Northern Ireland
last year, with 187 relating to grooming and sexual communication, police have said.
The
Police Service of Northern Ireland
(PSNI) and the Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland have announced a campaign to raise awareness of online dangers for children.
Clips from a BBC documentary about
prolific catfish abuser Alexander McCartney
are being used for the social media campaign.
McCartney was sentenced to life imprisonment
last year after admitting to 185 charges of online child sex abuse crimes and blackmail. The case led to the death of a 12-year-old girl in the US, who took her own life after being targeted and abused by McCartney.

The PSNI said online sexual offences against children are an increasing crime type in Northern Ireland.
'There were 2,187 sexual offences against children recorded in 2024, 187 of which relate to grooming and sexual communication with a child,' it said in a statement.
There were '799 offences relating to taking, possessing, sharing or publishing indecent images of children' reported last year, it said.
The PSNI said its child internet protection team is the busiest it has been since its inception in 2010.
'In 2024, 120 searches were carried out relating to tens of thousands of indecent images of children and thousands of devices were seized,' the force said. 'As a result of these searches, they made 43 arrests.'
Another
prolific online groomer, Max Hollingsbee
, was sentenced in May for a litany of online sex offences against underage girls. One of his victims offered her support for the new campaign.
'I think more young people should know that not everyone online is who they say they are,' said Immy (not her real name).
'What happened to me should never happen to you, but if it does – speak out. The police can and will help you. As a child or teenager, you're not going to be thinking rationally in that situation. I wasn't.
'A trusted adult or the police will know what to do to keep you safe. I have been to therapy and am taking steps to tackle my anxiety. I start university soon. It does get better.'
Det Supt Jordan Piper said groomers such as McCartney and Hollingsbee 'operate in a very similar way, concealing their identity online, pretending to be the same age as a child'.
'They use fake profile pictures, pretending to have similar interests to gain the trust of the child before steering the conversation to a sexual nature,' she said.
'Once trust in established, they use power and control to make, force, blackmail, guilt or trick a child into doing what the groomer wants.'
Ms Piper added: 'It is a crime for anyone to possess, make, distribute or show anyone an indecent image of a child under 18 years of age.
'This offence can be committed by an adult or a child. It is also a crime for an adult to send a sexually explicit image of themselves to a child.'
Independent chair of the Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland, Bernie McNally, said no child 'should ever feel alone, afraid or manipulated by someone hiding behind a screen'.
'Yet every day, online predators exploit the trust and innocence of young people, often in silence and secrecy. This campaign is a vital reminder of the urgent need for education, vigilance and open, honest conversations with our children.

Pictured: Custody image of sicko jailed for raping nine-year old child
Jason Harkness was handed a 13-year sentence for a total of 15 offences last week Police have released the custody image of a Co Tyrone man convicted by a jury of multiple offences including raping a nine-year old child. A judge told the 31-year-old, from Drum Road in Cookstown, that his offending indicated he had a "deviant sexual interest in children." Jason Harkness was handed a 13-year sentence for a total of 15 offences last week. These included raping and both sexually and physically assaulting the girl as well as possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornographic images. Speaking after the sentencing last week, Detective Sergeant Mallon praised the victim's 'bravery.' 'To take a child's innocence away from them in such an abhorrent way is sickening,' he said. "Our thoughts are with the victim today, who was only six years old when these offences began. 'We hope that the bravery shown by this victim in coming forward will encourage others who have experienced any form of sexual abuse to come forward to Police. 'Today's sentencing illustrates that we remain committed to investigating all reports of sexual offences against children and young people, building robust cases to get justice before the courts.' Jason Harkness was jailed today. On Wednesday 13 August, Judge Brian Sherrard at Dungannon Crown Court in Belfast sentenced Harkness to 13 years, split equally between prison and supervised licence. In addition he was told that he will be on the sex offenders' register and will be the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order. Harkness stood trial in Dungannon last year and, despite his claims that the young victim was making up allegations against him, he was convicted by a jury last November. During the trial, the jury heard how his offending emerged when the child became upset during a well-being lesson in school in September 2021 and made disclosures to a teacher. An investigation was launched and in December 2021 the child spoke to the PSNI when she outlined the abuse she has suffered over a period from 2019 to 2021. This included being sexually abused in the shower and being raped when she was aged nine. Harkness was arrested on March 9, 2022 and during a search of his home, officers seized electronic devices. When these were examined, officers located over 1,000 indecent images as well four extreme pornographic images. After deliberating for four hours, the jury returned unanimously guilty verdicts on all 15 charges.

PSNI investigating possible offences following pro-Palestine rally in Belfast
Police in Northern Ireland have said they are investigating whether any criminal offences were committed following a pro-Palestinian rally in Belfast city centre. Hundreds of people attended the event at Belfast City Hall on Sunday, with a small number displaying posters and placards in support of Palestine Action. The PSNI had previously warned that anyone carrying placards or wearing clothing showing support for the proscribed group may be committing an offence. Palestine Action was proscribed by the UK government in July, with the ban meaning that membership of, or support for, the group is a criminal offence under the Terrorism Act 2000. READ MORE No arrests were made during the Defend the Right to Protest rally on Sunday. However, police said they attended the event in Donegall Square North area and have launched an investigation. A statement said: 'Officers were deployed to the operation, including specially trained evidence gatherers, assisted by the Air Support Unit. 'During the demonstration, those involved blocked Chichester Street for a short period of time. Officers issued a number of warnings in relation to potential offences being committed. 'Several individuals in attendance were identified as being suspected of possessing articles indicating support for a proscribed organisation. 'Police are reviewing the evidence gathered in order to establish whether any offences have been committed.' The PSNI said it also received a report of an assault involving a protester and a member of the public which it was investigating. The force said inquiries are ongoing into this incident and has made an appeal for footage that could assist the investigation. The statement added: 'The right to protest, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly are fundamental human rights. 'These are protected in law and allow individuals to engage in peaceful protest, balanced against the rights and protection of others. [ Sally Rooney: I support Palestine Action. If this makes me a 'supporter of terror' under UK law, so be it Opens in new window ] 'We encourage anyone engaging in protest activity or attending demonstrations to do so lawfully and with consideration for other members of the public who wish to go about their daily business. 'A full investigation has been launched and police will review all available evidence to establish whether any further offences have been committed.' Anyone with information is asked to contact the PSNI on 101 and quote reference 776 of 17/08/25. The previous weekend, a 74-year-old woman was arrested for wearing a Palestine Action T-shirt in Belfast at an anti-racism rally. Amnesty International has called on the PSNI to 'uphold people's right to protest against the genocide being perpetrated in Gaza'. - PA
