From stray to legend: Kerala village immortalises Eldho the beloved dog with statue

KOCHI: At a time when the Supreme Court has ordered the swift rounding up and permanent detention of stray dogs in New Delhi, after taking suo motu notice of their growing menace, a quiet corner of Tripunithura is telling a very different story.
In Kozhivettumveli, Eroor, residents are making headlines for honouring a stray — by giving him a statue. His name was Eldho.
Sanakan K V, an autorickshaw driver at the local stand, recalls the day Eldho padded into their lives 14 years ago. 'He wasn't well. There was a burn scar on his left flank. We found out later he'd been picked up elsewhere under the ABC programme, sterilised, and released here,' he says. From day one, the dog's liquid brown eyes and gentle manners won over the neighbourhood.
Once he claimed a spot at the autorickshaw stand, Eldho stopped being 'just' a stray and became family to every home in the ward. His name, too, had a spark of local humour.
'Remember the dialogue from the film Mannar Mathai Speaking where Harisree Ashokan shouts, 'Eda Eldho… Ninne Cinemayil Eduthu!'? That's how we started calling him Eda Eldho — and it stuck,' says Sanakan.

‘Non-application of mind': What Supreme Court observed while cancelling Kannada actor Darshan's bail; pulls up Karnataka HC for giving ‘acquittal order to accused'

BENGALURU: Cancelling the bail granted to Kannada actor Darshan and his six aides in the Renukaswamy murder case, the Supreme Court Thursday observed that the order of the Karnataka high court depicted "non-application of the mind". The apex court noted that courts are not expected to render findings on the merits of the case at the bail stage. On Dec 13, 2024, the high court single bench judge Justice S Vishwajith Shetty granted regular bail to Darshan (accused number 2), Pavithra Gowda (accused no 1) along with other accused - R Nagaraju, Anu Kumar alias Anu, Lakshman M, Jagadeesh alias Jagga and Pradoosh S Rao - on grounds of non-furnishing of a memo for reasons of arrest as per the mandate of CrPC, several inconsistencies in statements of witnesses, etc. The state govt challenged the verdict. Now, after 244 days, the Supreme Court reversed the order. The bench, in the 66-page order, stated: "In the present case, the high court failed to properly evaluate the nature of allegations, involving premeditated murder and conspiracy, attracting Section 302 of IPC read with Section 120B IPC; the chain of circumstantial evidence, including CCTV footage, call records and forensic report showing a deliberate attempt to destroy evidence (e.g., by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo disposal of blood-stained clothes and vehicle cleaning); and the incriminating role of A2 (Darshan), who was in constant touch with A1 (Pavithra Gowda) and other co-accused before and after the incident, and who facilitated the conspiracy and cover-up. On the other hand, it simply recorded that A2 (Darshan) had 'no direct role' and there was 'no prima facie case', without discussing or analysing the incriminating material on record. This amounts to non-application of mind and renders the order unsustainable in law." By treating Darshan's stature as a mitigating factor, the high court committed a "manifest perversity" in the exercise of its discretion, thereby warranting cancellation of bail. "A2 is not a common undertrial. He enjoys celebrity status, mass following, political clout and financial muscle. His conduct inside jail - including recorded instances of VIP treatment, violations of jail rules and registered FIRs for misuse of facilities - reflects his capacity to defy the system even while in custody. If a person can subvert the prison system, the risk of interference with evidence, threatening or influencing witnesses and tampering with the course of justice is both real and imminent," the top court observed. Misconduct & influence Moreover, Darshan's immediate return to social events sharing the stage with prosecution witnesses, and continued influence over police witnesses, despite being on bail, establish that his liberty is a threat to the integrity of the proceedings, the court noted. "Granting leniency to such persons despite grave charges of conspiracy and murder sends the wrong message to society and undermines public confidence in the justice system. Accordingly, the accused's antecedents, influence, jail misconduct, and the seriousness of the charges against him make him unfit for bail," the SC stated. The apex court noted that on a cumulative analysis, it is evident that the high court suffers from serious legal infirmities. The order fails to record any special or cogent reasons for granting bail in a case involving charges under Sections 302, 120B and 34 of IPC. Instead, it reflects a mechanical exercise of discretion, marked by significant omissions of legally relevant facts. Moreover, the high court undertook an extensive examination of witness statements at the pre-trial stage, highlighting alleged contradictions and delays - issues that are inherently matters for the trial court to assess through cross-examination. The trial court alone is the appropriate forum to evaluate the credibility and reliability of witnesses, the SC observed. 'Five-star treatment? Face the music': Kannada filmstar Darshan, Pavithra back in jail; 'he abused the liberty of bail', says Supreme court

NEW DELHI/BENGALURU: In a big setback to Kannada filmstar Darshan in the Renukaswamy murder case, Supreme Court Thursday cancelled the actor's bail, ordered his re-arrest and speedy trial in the case, while warning the state govt against allowing any five-star treatment to the accused in jail. About five hours after the verdict came in, the actor was taken into custody along with his girlfriend Pavithra Gowda and five other accused, whose bail was similarly revoked by the top court. With two of the accused in transit from Chitradurga, Darshan, Pavithra and three others were remanded in judicial custody and sent to Bengaluru Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara Thursday night. Observing that persons regardless of popularity are equal before the law, a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan set aside the Karnataka HC order of Dec 13, 2024, saying it suffers from "various infirmities". Moreover, the high court undertook examination at the pre-trial stage," the bench said. Justice Pardiwala said the bail-cancellation judgement conveys a message that however big the accused may be, he or she is not above the law. Five-star treatment? Face the music, SC tells govt The top court cautioned the state govt against providing special treatment to the accused in jail. 'The day we come to know the accused persons are being provided five-star treatment, the first step would be to place the superintendent into suspension along with all other officials,' the court said, adding the HC committed a 'manifest perversity' in the exercise of its discretion, warranting cancellation of bail. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! Read More Undo The top court said popularity cannot be a shield for impunity, nor influence, resources and social status be the basis for grant of bail, adding evidence in the case indicates a premeditated and orchestrated crime, where the accused allegedly took the law into his own handsand engaged in systematic destruction of evidence. 'The bail order was granted primarily on the basis of the alleged urgent medical condition of the actor. However, a bare perusal reveals the plea was misleading, vague and grossly exaggerated. This establishes he abused the liberty of bail,' Justice Mahadevan, who penned the judgment for the bench, said. All seven arrested — including Nagaraju R, Lakshman M, Jagadeesh alias Jagga, Pradosh S Rao, and Anu Kumar — were taken to Annapoorneshwarinagar police station in west Bengaluru late Thursday. They were produced before the magistrate at his official residence in Koramangala and remanded in judicial custody. S Vishwajith Shetty of the high court granted the bail in Dec, citing delays in recording the statements of the witness and not furnishing the details of their arrest. After he came out of jail on regular bail, Darshan started participating in film-related events and acted in his next movie, which was shot in Dubai and Thailand. Arrested within hours of verdict Sources said Bengaluru city police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh formed multiple teams, fanned them out across the city to arrest the accused within hours of the SC verdict. While Pavithra was arrested from Rajarajeshwarinagar, Darshan was picked up from an apartment in Hosakerehalli, Banashankari III Stage, around 4.15pm.
