Gas processing to bolster Coastal's revenue
PETALING JAYA: Coastal Contracts Bhd 's earnings are expected to be underpinned by the upcoming capacity expansion at its Papan gas processing plant in Mexico and strong momentum in its shipbuilding division, says TA Research.
Coastal has been advancing its gas processing operations by expanding the Papan plant's capacity and also, modifying the Perdiz plant, both of which serve the Mexican oil and gas sector to incorporate liquified petroleum gas recovery capabilities.
TA Research said in a report the expansion of the Papan plant, operated in partnership with Mexico-based Pemex, is expected to increase capacity by at least 150 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd), with commissioning targeted by the end of this year.
Although the group saw temporary declines due to unplanned outages in the first quarter of this year (1Q25) , operations have since stabilised with processing volumes fully recovering to optimal level of 345mmscfd.
Now, both plants are operating at full capacity, with the Papan plant running at 345mmscfd, while the Perdiz plant has reached 185mmscfd.
'The upcoming expansion is expected to further strengthen Coastal's processing capabilities and support Pemex's broader gas infrastructure strategy,' TA Research said.
On the shipbuilding front, the research house said that Coastal's expanding order book will continue to support the shipbuilding division towards growth.
Coastal's current pipeline includes three utility support vessels and three high-end offshore support vessels.
These are scheduled for delivery between the second half of this year (2H25) and 1H27.
TA Research said the group is projecting up to RM600mil in vessel sales during this period, aligning with its long-term strategy to scale operations and improve earnings visibility.
Separately, Coastal's TC7 liftboat under Coastal's vessel chartering division will continue to remain as a key contributor to the group.
The asset is said to enter the final extension phase of its contract structure, set to end in September.
Since securing a 35% increase in charter rates in September 2022, TC7 had contributed meaningfully to the group's earnings.
'With a strong operational track record and potential for redeployment in sectors such as offshore wind, TC7 remains a strategic asset, though longer-term contract visibility beyond the current extension remains an area to monitor,' said TA Research.
The research house, which made no changes to its earnings forecast has maintained a 'buy' call on Coastal with a target price of RM2.04.
It added Coastal is expected to secure contract extension for the jack-up gas compression service unit and capacity expansion contract for the Papan plant, thus providing additional recurring income to the group.

Interview: China-Africa expo highlights deepening economic ties, says Zimbabwean expert
HARARE, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE) showcases the deepening economic ties between China and Africa and serves as a platform for advancing pragmatic, mutually beneficial cooperation, a policy expert told Xinhua on Friday. "The ongoing CAETE shows that China and Africa can work together to develop pragmatic solutions that will enhance cooperation and mutual benefit, while enhancing sustainable development and modernization in Africa," Munetsi Madakufamba, executive director of the Southern African Research and Documentation Center, a Zimbabwe-based think tank, told Xinhua in a written interview. Noting that trade between China and Africa has expanded significantly since the inception of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in 2000, Madakufamba said platforms such as CAETE help further deepen trade, drive Africa's industrialization and narrow trade disparities. "Africa aspires not only to import finished goods but also to develop its manufacturing sector, which requires the development of infrastructure and machinery to produce finished goods," he said, adding that Africa welcomes China to establish more manufacturing hubs in Africa to facilitate the continent's modernization and industrialization. Such cooperation, he added, would allow Africa to leapfrog with cutting-edge technology and build robust industrial capacity, while creating new trade and investment opportunities for both sides. Besides strengthening economic and trade relations, Madakufamba said that the expo also aligns with the 10 partnership action plans proposed at last year's FOCAC summit. During a ministerial meeting in Changsha city ahead of the expo, China announced plans to extend zero-tariff treatment on 100 percent of tariff lines to all 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic ties. "In today's environment characterized by trade wars and worldwide tariff impositions by the United States, the CAETE presents a platform for pragmatic solutions that have the potential to balance global trade," he said, noting that engaging with African entrepreneurs and innovators is essential to address the unique demands of the African market. Malaysian businesses increase connections with China, HSBC survey shows
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian businesses are adapting their trade strategy to significantly increase connections with China (61 percent) amid global uncertainties, a survey by HSBC showed. The bank said in a statement on Thursday that Malaysian businesses have been hit with surging costs and supply chain disruptions and are having to rethink their strategy and planned investments as U.S. tariffs and shifting trade policies continue to impact their enterprises. Considering current trade dynamics, Malaysian businesses have also been keen on increasing their connections with South Asia (55 percent) and North Asia (44 percent). Meanwhile, the survey found that currently, the biggest concern for more than half of Malaysian businesses (55 percent) is rising costs due to tariffs and other trade-related factors. In response to this, 42 percent of Malaysian businesses have shifted their focus to domestic markets, prioritizing local customers and reducing international exposure while 40 percent of businesses plan to do the same. In addition, 37 percent of Malaysian businesses have increased their inventory levels to manage supply disruptions, with 49 percent planning to do so as well. Despite global uncertainties, 250 Malaysian-based companies surveyed are optimistic about their international growth but are in need of external strategic advice on the matter. About 91 percent of companies are confident they can grow international trade, ahead of the 89 percent global average. More encouragingly, 73 percent think that trade uncertainty has encouraged their business to evolve and explore new opportunities while 55 percent are seeking strategic advice on international expansion, restructuring or supply chain realignment. "Despite the challenges posed by the uncertain tariff and trade landscape, businesses in Malaysia are demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the way they operate," said Omar Siddiq, chief executive officer and head of banking, HSBC Malaysia. While supply chains may be further reconfigured, he noted there continues to be strong potential for local companies to leverage on Malaysia's strong trade ties particularly in Asia.
