Vandals accused of 'insulting' war heroes after damaging memorial wreath in Scots town
Vandals in a Scots town have been accused of 'insulting' war heroes after a memorial wreath was damaged.
A special ceremony had been held at the war memorial in Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway on Thursday to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
However, by Saturday night members of the RH Youth Organisation – who had laid one of the wreaths – discovered one had been damaged.
The group's Robert Humes said: 'I went along and had a look and it was just a mess. I don't know or understand why someone would do that.
'We had all had such a great week in Lockerbie. The community council had organised the event on Thursday and we had our own event on Saturday. People came and joined in our picnic and we had war time music.
'To find that on Saturday just dampened the whole thing. All the people who gave up their lives and the people that are serving – it was an insult to those who fought and died for their country.
'You just get some disrespectful people and it's really disappointing to happen in this day and age.'
Mr Humes said that as well as the RH Youth Organisation wreath, there was one from toe town's Rotary club and one on behalf of everyone in Lockerbie.
He added: 'Someone had made the wreath so time and effort has gone into that and it's been destroyed.
'The police have apparently been informed so I hope they find whoever has done it and there's cameras on the high street as well.
'People might say it's just a wreath but it represents something. It's a generic insult to the whole country. I'm hoping they'll find the culprit – I don't know if it was youth or adults. Even if they just apologised and replaced the wreath it would help.
'Young people were paying their respects and one or two in the organisation have their dad serving. Their mum was on the street as well and was there representing on behalf of her husband. It's a knock-on effect.
'There's a lot of comments from upset people about it, people have messaged saying they're sorry to hear it and who would do such a thing.

Friends of mum killed in 'murder-suicide' urged not to attend husband's funeral
The children of a Scots woman who was reportedly killed in murder-suicide at the hands of her husband have asked that her friends not attend his funeral. The bodies of Andrew Searle and Dawn Kerr, originally from Musselburgh, were discovered by a neighbour at their home in Les Pesquiés, south of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, France in February. The couple had lived in the area for around ten years and were 'well integrated' into the community. Following a post-mortem, French police confirmed that Searle died from hanging and Ms Kerr suffered 'several blows to the skull using a blunt and sharp object'. Prosecutor Fabrice Belargent said that 'the analysis carried out did not so far show any evidence that a third party was involved'. In a statement shared on social media, Ms Kerr's son, musician Callum Kerr, and sister Amanda, said that the 'prevailing hypothesis remains that of a murder-suicide'. STV News Dawn Kerr and Andrew Searle were found dead at their home in France They added: 'There is also no evidence whatsoever of any third party's involvement at this stage. 'While the official investigation is still ongoing, we cannot ignore the circumstances as they stand.' The children have asked that their mother not be included in 'any way' in the funeral arrangements being made for Searle. Their statement adds: 'Please do not share photographs of them together. 'Please do not attend Andrew's service if you were a friend of our mother. 'It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death. 'We ask for understanding, privacy and respect as we continue to grieve and seek justice for our mum.' A statement issued by French prosecutors in February said: 'The two deceased persons, a man and a woman, were the owners of the house in which their bodies were discovered. 'They were British expatriates, retired, and had been living in Aveyron for five years. 'The first victim, Ms Kerr, has a significant head injury. 'A box containing jewellery was found near to her, but no item or weapon which could have caused the injuries were located. 'Mr Searle, who was found hanged … did not show any visible defensive injuries.' Hollyoaks star begs pals of Scots mum 'murdered' in France to avoid stepdad's funeral
Andrew Searle and his wife Dawn Kerr died at their property in rural France earlier this year sparking headlines across the world. The family of a Scots woman who was found dead in a home in rural France in a suspected murder-suicide have issued a blistering statement to urge people not to attend the funeral of their stepdad. Andrew Searle and his wife Dawn Kerr died at their property in Les Pesquiès, south of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, earlier this year. The bodies of Andrew, 62, and Dawn, 56, were discovered on February 6 after neighbours became concerned. Dawn, who was originally from Musselburgh, was found lying outside the front door with jewellery scattered around her, while furniture was flipped inside the property. Mr Seale was found hanged with a gag in his mouth and it was initially believed the couple had been attacked in a staged robbery. Detectives later suspected, however, that the husband killed his wife before taking his own life. Now Callum - who has appeared in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks and in Virgin River on Netflix - has issued a statement alongside his sister Amanda, where they urged people not to attend the funeral. In a lengthy statement shared online, the pair said: "In the absence of any evidence suggesting third-party involvement in the tragic death of our mother, Dawn Kerr, the prevailing hypothesis remains that of a murder-suicide. "Our mother was killed by multiple blows to the head, and Andrew was found deceased by hanging. His injuries are consistent with self-hanging, and no defensive wounds were found on his body. There is also no evidence whatsoever of any third party's involvement at this stage. "While the official investigation is still ongoing, we cannot ignore the circumstances as they stand. For this reason, we must respectfully but firmly request that our mother not be included in any way in the funeral arrangements being made for Andrew. Please do not share photographs of them together." They added: "Please do not attend Andrew's service if you were a friend of our mother. It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death. We ask for understanding, privacy and respect as we continue to grieve and seek justice for our mum." Dawn and Andrew Searle married in September 2023 and were originally from Musselburgh, in East Lothian. Callum was beside his mother as she tied the knot with Andrew just two years ago. Sharing photos from the big day online at the time, he wrote: "Not many people can say they walked their own mother down the aisle. What a pleasure!! I love you mum. Congrats to Dawn and Andy on their wonderful wedding day and here's to a tremendous life together for the happy couple." Dawn and Andrew had moved from Scotland to Les Pesquies, near Toulouse, southern France, 10 years ago to start a new life. The pair were retired but Dawn worked from time to time as a project manager and Andrew did freelance financial work. The area where they lived has always been popular with British expats and those who own property abroad and the Searles regularly held dinner parties and gathering for their friends nearby. *If you're struggling and need to talk, the Samaritans operate a free helpline open 24/7 on 116 123.
