Barcelona star departs training prematurely

Yahoo31-01-2025
A leading member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona was forced into a premature departure from training on Friday.
That's according to Jijantes, who point towards Raphinha as the player in question.
Wide-man Raphinha is for his part of course fresh off another stellar individual showing during the week, which saw the Brazilian notch a brace of assists en route to Barcelona's 2-2 Champions League draw with Atalanta.
As much only added to what has been nothing short of a spectacular campaign on the part of the former Leeds United man to date.
Those of a Blaugrana persuasion, in turn, may be left concerned by news that Raphinha departed group training at The Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper early on Friday.
As confirmed by Jijantes, however, there is no need to fret.
This comes with the 28-year-old having been suffering with the effects of a common cold, expected to be fit and ready to play his part against Deportivo Alavés on Sunday as a result.

MMA Junkie's Submission of the Month for June: Merab Dvalishvili chokes Sean O'Malley

MMA Junkie's Submission of the Month for June: Dvalishvili taps O'Malley in rematch With another action-packed month of MMA in the books, MMA Junkie looks at the best submissions from June 2025: Here are the five nominees, listed in chronological order, and winner of MMA Junkie's Submission of the Month award for June. At the bottom of the post, let us know if we got it right by voting for your choice. Nominee: Kevin Holland def. Vicente Luque at UFC 316 Kevin Holland (28-13 MMA, 15-10 UFC) flipped the script when he tapped Vicente Luque (23-11-1 MMA, 16-7 UFC) with a choke similar to the Brazilian's signature maneuver in their welterweight bout. Holland defeated Vicente Luque with an anaconda choke (officially announced as a D'Arce choke) just 63 seconds into the second round,. The submission came after a strong first-round effort put forth by Holland, as he stunned Luque with a big standing elbow that wobbled him. Holland swarmed, but Luque was able to evade and make it long enough to get submitted. Nominee: Kayla Harrison def. Julianna Peña at UFC 316 First, an Olympic gold medalist. Then, a PFL champion. Now, a UFC champion. Kayla Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) added a new trophy for the case in emphatic fashion when she put away Julianna Peña (13-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) to claim women's bantamweight gold. The first round was all Harrison, as she dragged Peña to the canvas with relative ease. Though the moment proved not to matter in the end, referee Vitor Ribeiro deducted a point from Peña for multiple illegal upkicks to the grounded Harrison. Early in Round 2, Harrison dragged the fight back to the canvas, where she grabbed hold of Peña's arm in a kimura and torqued until the submission came. Nominee: Ronnie Gibbs def. Biaggio Ali Walsh at 2025 PFL World Tournament 7 One of the biggest upsets in PFL history – and the sport – was registered courtesy of Ronnie Gibbs (2-0) against Biaggio Ali Walsh (2-1) Ali Walsh, grandson of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and one of PFL's most promoted names, was submitted by promotional newcomerGibbs in a shocking result. Ali Walsh entered the bout on some sports books as high as a -2000 favorite. Gibbs was also fighting at lightweight, a weight class above his usual fighting weight of 145 pounds. Nominee: Alexandre Pantoja def. Kai Kara-France at UFC 317 Alexandre Pantoja (30-5 MMA, 14-3 UFC) is still on top of the UFC's flyweight division after turning in another dominant title defense against Kai Kara-France (25-12 MMA, 8-5 UFC) . The fight was one-way traffic throughout for the champion. Pantoja kept the pressure high by getting Kara-France to the ground early in Round 3. He once again found the back with plenty of time to work. This time, Pantoja went harder for the submission. He found the rear-naked choke opening and clamped down until the tap came. The winner: Merab Dvalishvili def. Sean O'Malley at UFC 316 Merab Dvalishvili is a "Machine." In the UFC 316 main event, Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) defeated Sean O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) even more emphatically than he did the first time the two fought, as he retained his title via North-South neck crank. The stoppage came at 4:42 of Round 3. Dvalishvili found success in the opening round, as he relied on his signature relentless pace and aggression. O'Malley tried his best to fend off takedown attempts, but they came repeatedly at him. Dvalishvili mixed in his striking in the clinch and on the ground. In Round 2, O'Malley found increasing success. In one particular sequence he cracked Dvalishvili with a hard left hand on the break. But Dvalishvili kept moving forward. The round ended with a crazy spinning sequence from both fighters, who somehow ended up tied up with one another when the bell sounded. The crowd let them know their appreciation. Round 3 saw Dvalishvili drag O'Malley down. Just as the crowd became restless, Dvalishvili shifted into North-South position, grabbed hold, and cranked. Then came the tap. Cast Your Vote!

What's Next For Lionel Messi? The Inter Miami Star's Options Before 2026 World Cup

In less than a year from now, Lionel Messi is expected to be starring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Argentina attempts to repeat as champions and win its fourth overall title. But there has been some recent buzz over Messi's club situation as the 38-year-old's contract at Inter Miami is set to expire at the end of 2025. After Messi and Miami were eliminated by PSG (Messi's former team) from this summer's Club World Cup on Sunday, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reported Monday that there is mutual interest to extend the player's deal with the MLS club. "The necessary steps are being taken with the right mindset to make it happen," Romano reported. But what would be Messi's options if he did leave Miami ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup? Would a return to Barcelona be feasible? Any other potential offers out there? We take a look. Stay at Inter Miami? Messi has been at the MLS club since summer of 2023, and he is already the team's all-time scorer (50 goals across all competitions). He has also helped the team win two trophies (Leagues Cup, Supporters Shield) but he has yet to win the MLS Cup. He's being handsomely paid as well. Messi is the league's highest-paid player with a total annual compensation of nearly $20.5 million – greater than the entire payroll of 21 MLS teams. Inter Miami is on track to open a new stadium in March 2026 and team owner Jorge Mas has repeatedly stated that he wants the star player to be part of the team that inaugurates it. "We wish for Messi to finish his career here. I said a few months ago that we should have news in the summer about that, but hopefully it will be as soon as possible," Mas told ESPN in June. Off the pitch, Messi has settled in nicely in Miami. His sons are part of Inter Miami's development academy and his family is often seen on the sideline of home games. Barcelona return? Join Guardiola at Manchester City? The image of Messi in tears as he bid farewell to the club in 2021 where he became a global icon (672 goals in 778 appearances) remains seared in the memories of Barça supporters. But it likely won't spur a return to the club anytime soon. Similar to Miami's stadium situation, Barcelona is racing toward a re-opening of the venerable Camp Nou following extensive renovations. A return home for Messi would certainly be appealing. But the club's financial struggles, which prompted Messi's departure in the first place, have not been fully resolved. Financial rules hampered Barcelona from often fully registering players, such as like Dani Olmo last season. And even after winning LaLiga this past season under teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, the team continues to face financial difficulties. Recent reports of them wanting to sign star forward Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao have been dampened due to Barcelona's salary situation. What about other European teams? A report by Argentine journaist Esteban Edul stated that Messi did want to play at a "more competitive club" ahead of the 2026 World Cup, although no specific teams have been stated. Similar to a hypothetical return to Barcelona, an improbable reunion with Pep Guardiola - his former coach at Barcelona with whom he won three Champions League trophies - would create some buzz. Manchester City had previously been linked with Messi, especially before he signed with PSG in 2023. Guardiola has continued to be complimentary of his former player, but joining up at the Premier League team would be difficult. Rekindle Ronaldo rivalry in Saudi Pro League? Messi was reportedly offered a deal to join Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal in 2023, which would rekindle his El Clásico rivalry with former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo. Nonetheless, soccer insider Guillem Balague debunked the buzz about Messi's father having a recent meeting with Al Hilal. So, what will happen? The likeliest scenario is that Messi signs a new deal with Inter Miami ahead of the 2026 MLS season, which will secure his future through next summer's World Cup. Any big developments in Messi's playing career will occur after next summer, whether or not he lifts another World Cup crown. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? 30 Most Important Bears of 2025: Cairo Santos (No. 28)

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for an exciting 2025 NFL season, which features some new faces within the organization poised to get the franchise back to its winning ways. That starts with the hiring of Ben Johnson as head coach, as well as overhauling the interior offensive line, adding pieces on defense and a potenital impactful rookie draft class. Every day from now right up through training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Bears for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025 and tackle the biggest question facing them this year. At No. 28 is kicker Cairo Santos, the reliable kicker who should be counted on during big moments yet again for the 2025 season. Background Position: Kicker Age: 33 Experience: 12th season 2025 cap hit: $4.26 million 2024 recap Santos entered the 2024 season with no questions regarding his status as the primary kicker after signing a four-year extension at the end of the 2023 campaign. The Brazilian kicker has been as consistent as they come for the Bears, and even with two new battery mates at long snapper (Scott Daly) and holder (Tory Taylor), there was no reason to be concerned about a slump. Santos didn't have his best season, though. For the first time since rejoining the Bears in 2020, Santos finished the season with a field goal percentage below 85%, with a pair of misses standing out. In Week 11, Santos had a game-winning field goal lined up to vanquish the Packers' long winning streak against the Bears. The kick was blocked, however, and time expired. A week later, Santos missed another field goal, seemingly going through a slump in the middle of the year. Santos exorcised his demons in Week 18 against the Packers with a game-winning 51-yard field goal to give the Bears their first win over Green Bay since 2018. 2025 outlook Entering his sixth consecutive season with the Bears, we have a pretty good idea of who Santos is as a kicker. He has excellent accuracy with a limited range. His longest field goal of 54 yards in 2024 was tied for 29th in 2024. That being said, Santos is the most accurate kicker in Bears history and has continuity on his side going into 2025. Despite the Bears overhauling their coaching staff over the winter, the special teams unit remained relatively unchanged. Richard Hightower is returning as special teams coordinator, while Daly and Taylor are back at long snapper and holder, respectively. Kickers love consistency, and Santos will have it for the upcoming season. Big question: Is Santos in danger of losing his job? Kickers can never get too comfortable in one spot for long. While Santos has been solid during his second stint in Chicago, rumblings about his job security surface from time to time for a variety of reasons. Even though the 33-year-old signed an extension a year and a half ago, the Bears could easily cut bait during the preseason after his up-and-down season and save $3.2 million, per Over the Cap. The other variable that could throw a wrench into things is Jonathan Kim, the former Michigan State kicker. Kim finished his career as the best kicker in Spartan history and knocked in a 58-yard field goal during his tenure. He's an accomplished kicker and could give Santos a run for his money. While we have seen kicking competition come and go during Santos' time with the Bears, you can never count out a new challenger. There's a chance a training camp battle ensues, with Kim giving Santos a run for his money. 30 Most Important Bears of 2025
