CRPF dog killed in bee attack during Korgotalu hills anti-Naxal operation
Rolo, a two-year-old female sniffer dog of the CRPF, was the only casualty suffered by the security forces during their biggest anti-Naxal operation at the Korgotalu hills as the four-legged soldier was attacked and stung around 200 times by a swarm of bees.
Officials told PTI that the canine was tasked with sniffing out explosives and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during the mega 21-day operation that concluded on May 11. Rolo was killed in action on April 27, they said.
The CRPF DG has awarded a commendation medal to the dog posthumously.
The security forces led by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Chhattisgarh Police units have claimed to have killed 31 Maoists, a 'deadly blow' to the armed cadres of the Naxalites.
A total of 18 troops were injured, including some who underwent leg amputation due to blast injuries, in this operation that the forces said was the 'biggest coordinated' operation against the Maoists till date.
The Korgotalu hills lie on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border (Bijapur and Mulugu districts of the two states respectively) and are home to wild animals, including bears, insects and bees, apart from water bodies and natural caves. The dense jungle makes them an ideal hideout for the Naxals.
Rolo, a Belgian Shepherd, was carrying out a search operation when the party was suddenly attacked by the swarm of bees on April 27, a senior CRPF official said.
Rolo's handlers covered it with a polythene sheet but the bees slipped inside and bit it. Due to intense pain and irritation, the dog went berserk and came out of the cover, making it vulnerable to more stings, the officials said.
The dog was stung around 200 times and fell unconscious. She was evacuated from the spot and emergency treatment was given to her by the handlers, the officials said.
However, Rolo succumbed to the pain on the way to a medical facility on April 27 and was declared brought dead by the veterinarians of the force.
The dog was deployed for anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh in April last year after being trained at the CRPF canine training centre at Taralu near Bengaluru in Karnataka.

A district task force will be immediately constituted in every district to carry out detection of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and ensure strict enforcement of the Inner Line Permit regime," Mithi said. The MHA had last month issued a 30-day deadline for all states and Union Territories to verify the identity and documentation of individuals suspected to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Those failing to produce valid documents would be liable for deportation, officials said. It also instructed states to invoke their statutory powers to detect, detain and deport illegal immigrants. Cop detected 58 crimes: Court; grants 4 years minimum prescribed jail term in '16 graft case
Mumbai: A special court on Wednesday convicted former assistant police inspector (API) Suresh Naik (65) in a 2016 corruption case, but sentenced him to the minimum prescribed four years' of rigorous imprisonment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The court observed that Naik committed misconduct as a public servant by breaching integrity and honesty, thereby tarnishing the image of public service, but noting his extensive service as an investigating officer, which led to the successful prosecution of culprits in 58 crimes, the judge awarded the minimum prescribed prison sentence and imposed a Rs 1 lakh fine. Naik was charged under Sections 7 and 13(1)(d) read with Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, which deal with public servants accepting illegal gratification and criminal misconduct, for demanding and accepting bribe from Ramkrishna Kute, then a 50-year-old driver employed with BMC's executive engineer of transport city who was trapped in a corruption case. On March 25, 2016, Kute was arrested after an acquaintance, Surve, misused his name and collected Rs 4 lakh from a chawl resident promising to reduce his water bill. It was alleged that of this amount, Rs 50,000 was handed to Kute. He was later released on bail, with a condition to attend Parksite police station every Thursday and Sunday. On May 5, 2016, Naik, who was the investigating officer in the case, demanded a bribe of Rs 5.3 lakh from Kute to show undue favour in an ongoing investigation and to cancel mandatory police station attendance. Two days later, Kute approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau. A trap was laid near Vikhroli police station and Naik was caught accepting the first instalment of Rs 30,000 from Kute. In a 172-page judgment sentencing Naik, special judge Shashikant Eknathrao Bangar said, "Though the accused served dutifully as a police officer for a long time, his misconduct during the incident in question casts serious doubt." The judge denied Naik's claims of false implication by Kute. The Rs 30,000 seized during the trap was ordered to be confiscated to the state.
