Mumbai train blasts: Shock, anger among those hurt, families of deceased
MUMBAI: Shock, anger and a sense of futility overcame the families of those who were killed or injured in the 11/7 serial train blasts. Monday's acquittal of all 12 accused prompted them to ask who actually perpetrated the crime, with some remarking sarcastically, 'No one did it!'
Decades of fruitlessness have sealed the lips of Priti Sawant, whose husband, Parag (36), became the face of the tragedy.
Parag died in 2015 after a long spell in coma. Priti is currently employed with Western Railway at Bhayander station but declined comment to TOI, saying she did not wish to relive the trauma. She was an expectant mother in 2006, and her daughter was born after Parag's injury.
Harshal Bhalerao (23) of Vasai was killed in the blast. His mother Saguna said Monday, 'No verdict will bring my son back. But the guilty must be punished.'
Harshal's father, Yashwant, said, 'Not a single victim's family will like this judgment. We have named our bungalow 'Harshal 11/7' after him. He was our only boy, now our daughter takes care of us.' Harshal was on his first day of work in Andheri when he fell victim at Borivli.
Artist Mahendra Pitale lost an arm. He said, 'The order is a massive shock. Is it going to take law enforcement agencies another 19 years to find the real perpetrators?'
Pitale too was given a job by railways.
'My prosthetic limb is very expensive and I have to find sponsors or depend on trusts to be able to afford it,' said Pitale, who has changed prosthetic limbs seven times in the past two decades.
'No one killed 200 people & injured 700...,' tweeted chartered accountant Chirag Chauhan, who had suffered a spinal injury that left his legs and lower body paralysed.
Vishakha Seksaria, sister of Vrindesh, who was killed, said, 'I am unable to digest this news.'
Subhash Saboo said, 'I can never forget that day as my father (Nathmal) was on the train towards Malad and he never made it home.'
Rishi Bobra (38), who spent a month in the ICU, said he had nothing to say on the verdict and had moved ahead.
Garden landscaper Harish Pawar was injured when a train rod pierced his chest. He bubbled over in anger on Monday. 'Why was the evidence that was deemed acceptable by the lower courts for conviction, entirely negated by HC?'
Vasai resident Raniya D'Souza lost her father, Manuel (36), when she was just six and a half. Manuel, a chemical engineer and the sole breadwinner, was killed in the Matunga blast. Raniya is grateful to Western Railway for having granted her a job after graduation. Her younger brother, who was only two and a half at the time, does not have any memories of their father.
Hansraj Kanojia, who lost a leg, demanded reinvestigation. 'If they are being set free today and go on to commit the same crime again, who will take responsibility? The case should be taken to the SC.'

Three men damage 15 vehicles with stones & sticks in Dhankawdi
1 2 Pune: Three men damaged 18 vehicles — 15 autorickshaws, two cars and a school van — with stones and sticks between 12.35am and 1am on Wednesday at Dhankawdi, and threatened residents with dire consequences if anyone intervened in their act of vandalism, claiming themselves to be local "Bhais" (strongmen). Sumit Rangnekar (42), a resident of the area, lodged a complaint with the Sahakarnagar police later in the morning. The trio damaged the windshield of his car. Deputy commissioner of police (Zone II) Milind Mohite told TOI, "The reason behind the vandalism is not known yet. Our team is studying the CCTV footage of the area, which shows the three men riding on a motorcycle and damaging the vehicles parked on a road. They have been riding triple-seat." DCP Mohite said, "We suspect that the case of vehicle vandalism is connected to another case of house ransacking in the area. A man celebrated his birthday with his second wife and two sons, and three sons of his earlier wife came to his house and ransacked it. The three men were seen leaving the same area on their motorcycle where the ransacked house is located. We are yet to arrive at any conclusion, though." Sangli contractor found dead; kin say he was under financial stress due to unpaid govt bills & debts
Kolhapur: A 35-year-old govt contractor from Tandulwadi village in Sangli's Islampur taluka was found dead on his farm on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Harshal Patil, who worked on pipe-laying and tank-contruction projects of the Jal Jeevan Mission (a rural water supply scheme). Harshal's cousin Akshay told the police that the contractor was under immense financial strain because of bills of Rs 1.4 crore pending clearance with govt, and debt of Rs 65 lakh with banks and private lenders. Many contractors across the state are awaiting govt bill payments. On July 4, the contractors held a statewide strike demanding immediate clearance of dues. Since Jan 2025, contractors have also held at least five protests in different districts. Milind Bhosale, the state president of the contractors' association, said he has written at least 25 letters to govt to hold a meeting over Rs 90,000 crore dues. "Across the state, govt's Jal Jeevan Mission department alone has pending bills of Rs 12,000 crore. The public works department also has Rs 46,000 crore dues. In March, we met PWD minister Shivendraraje Bhosale. There are pending bills of Rs 8,500 crore with the rural department and Rs 20,000 crore with the water resources department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like $30K Goes a Long Way in This Clementi Condo squarerooms Read More Undo We met Girish Mahajan, who assured us of a meeting with CM Devendra Fadnavis during the assembly session, but the session has ended, and there is no word from govt's side yet," he said. Sangli ZP chief executive officer Trupti Dhodmise told TOI: "The deceased contractor was not registered with us. Some big contractor may have leased out works to him, which we need to find out." On Tuesday, at 7pm, Harshal Patil left home. When he did not return even late in the night, his relatives went looking for him in Satara and Pune. They also registered a missing complaint at the Kurlap police station on Tuesday night. However, on Wednesday afternoon, Harshal's family members found him dead on the farm. Assistant inspector Vikram Patil said, "We have not found any suicide note. We are, however, getting the statements of the deceased man's relatives. We have registered the death as a suicide." Akshay said Harshal did not want his father, who is a farmer, to know about his financial troubles. "Harshal was of a quiet nature. He used to tell such things to our common friends," said another relative. Harshal is survived by his wife, parents, two younger brothers and a four-year-old daughter. His family was financially dependent on him. Jayant Patil, senior NCP (SP) politician and local MLA, said, "Fed up with the govt's false promises of employment, the children of ordinary farmers had turned to contracting. Govt has dashed the dreams of these youths who were striving to build their world through hard work. State govt is distributing contracts to win elections despite having no funds in the treasury. Today, contractors across the state are forced to beg and protest at the govt's doorstep to recover their pending dues. This is not the situation of just one department, but of all departments. Contractor don't just support their households; many workers' families also depend on them, but govt seems to have no regard for this. Just as we see farmer suicides, I fear a wave of contractor suicides may begin."

Police peg Ahilyanagar financial fraud at Rs400cr with 3,000 losing investments
Nashik: At least 3,000 people have approached the Ahilyanagar police with complaints of losing close to Rs 400 crore to a man who allegedly collected the amounts with a promise of high returns on investments, initial probe by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) revealed. The Ahilyanagar police have arrested the man. District superintendent of police Somnath Gharge has suspended four policemen accused of taking Rs 1.5 crore from the man for not taking action against him for the alleged fraud. The matter came to light when two FIRs were registed — one related to a cheating case of Rs 8 lakh by the Rahata police on July 4, and another of over Rs 1.6 crore on July 6 by the Shirdi police — against Bhupendra Savle, the prime accused, and six others others under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act, 1999. In June, a case was registered against Savle in Nandurbar district in another cheating case. He was arrested and was in Nandurbar district jail. The Ahilyanagar police took Bhupendra's custody from the Nandurbar district jail. The six other accused were absconding, a senior Ahilyanagar police officer said. "After the cases were registered in Rahata and Shirdi, several investors started approaching us. Based on their statements, we estimate at least 3,000 people must have been duped of around Rs 400 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo Savle would initially pay returns to the investors, but subsequently failed. We will take all measures to recover the investors' money," Gharge told TOI. Investigation revealed that Savle had started an investment firm, called 'Grow More Investment Finance', in Shirdi about a year-and-a-half ago. Four to five members of his family would visit villages around Rahata town in Ahilyanagar, encouraging people to invest in the firm for good returns. Four people, who worked with the Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan, would also recommend investment in the firm. The police said they were currently on the run. "One person worked in the Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan as a clerk. After an FIR was registered against him, he was suspended from the service. There were three more temporary workers with the Sansthan, whose names were mentioned in the FIRs; their services have also been terminated," Goraksha Gadilkar, chief executive officer of the Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust, told TOI. An Ahilyanagar police officer said the complainant, who filed an FIR on July 4, told them that Bhupendra had assured a return of Rs 60,000 per month as against an investment of Rs 5 lakh for a year. However, the complainant claimed that he received an instalment of Rs 60,000 only for one month, after which Bhupendra started promising future dates for payments and eventually began avoiding him. The complainant in the FIR registered on July 6 also told the police that Bhupendra had paid the promised return against his for a month. The Nandurbar police had received a similar complaint in June against Bhupendra and arrested him from Ajmer, Rajasthan. Inspector Hemant Patil of the Nandurbar police said, "We traced Bhupendra to Ajmer after an FIR was registered about a month back." During questioning after his arrest, Bhupendra told the police that he had paid Rs 1.5 crore to four policemen who were threatening to file a case against him, claiming that he was running an investment firm without necessary permissions. The alleged payment to the policemen took place months before the first cheating case was registered against Bhupendra. SP Gharge confirmed that Bhupendra had electronically transferred Rs 1.5 crore to a bank account belonging to a relative of one of the four policemen. Based on Bhupendra's statement, the four policemen, including a PSI, were suspended pending inquiry on Monday.
