Become a Master of Evil With Darth Vader's Actual Lightsaber (if You Have $3 Million)

io9 has covered a few notable Star Wars auctions lately, as rare toys and highly collectible props have come to market in surprisingly robust amounts. But maybe the most exciting example has just emerged: Darth Vader's lightsaber. The actual, authentic, screen-matched hilt used by David Prowse and his stunt double in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As your mind reels at the possibility of owning such a prize, consider that it's estimated to command $1 million at the lowest estimate and $3 million at the highest… and maybe more.
Propstore's press release touting the sale notes that back in 2022, it sold a screen-matched miniature of a Star Wars X-wing fighter for over $2.3 million, but 'Vader's lightsaber has the potential to surpass that figure.'
If any Star Wars prop is going to rake in that much dough, it's gotta be this one. The press release stresses that this is the very weapon deployed in Darth Vader's climactic battles with Luke Skywalker, used on-set by Prowse and stunt performer Bob Anderson.
Here are additional details on the piece: 'It is constructed from a vintage British press camera flash handle that was transformed into Vader's infamous weapon through the fitting of dressing components such as plastic grips, calculator bubbles, and cosmetic wiring. This specific prop was further modified with a custom blade-mounting system that facilitated the installation of a wooden rod; the rod served as the blade during the choreographed fight scenes and made the physical, on-camera dueling possible. It also later served as a guide for visual effects artists to add the hand-animated glow for the final shots.'
What's more, 'this is believed to be the only hero lightsaber prop from the original Star Wars trilogy with verifiable screen use ever to be offered at public auction and is widely considered one of the most sought-after items in Star Wars collecting.'
Propstore's Entertainment Memorabilia Auction takes place this September in Los Angeles, after several of the biggest items—including Indiana Jones' bullwhip and belt from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Sauron's helmet from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring—complete a press tour to London, Beverly Hills, and New York. You can find out how to bid here.

Going back to a 70s sound, Styx as progressive as ever on new album

They are one of the longest-running classic rock bands and have countless hit songs. And yet to this day, Styx can still be misunderstood. Thanks to such classics as the ballad "Babe" or the soft folk-rock number "Boat On A River" which only made the charts in Europe, Styx is often considered to be a soft-rock group. This, even though they were one of the first successful progressive-rock bands in the United States. Now, on their 18th album titled "Circling From Above," this progressive style is once again clearly in evidence. A broad musical palette "I think that Styx, almost notoriously, were never critics' darlings. This is long before I was in the band," says Lawrence Gowan, who has been a singer and keyboard player for Styx since 1999. "They had a very wide palette that they drew from," the 68-year-old musician says. "They could be very much a pop band. They could be a heavy rock band, and they could also be a progressive band. There were so many ways that you could relate to them that maybe one of those elements might be not what your taste is." Yet all the criticism notwithstanding, Styx has since the 1970s succeeded in filling large concert halls with regular tours. But most recently they have once again been extremely productive in the recording studio. "Circling From Above" is their third album in eight years. This is important both for the band and the group's fans, Gowan argues. "You're proving to yourselves and to your audience that you're still viable, that you still have thoughts, musical thoughts and lyrical thoughts that are occurring to you that you feel are relevant to 2025. That's very important," he says. Song texts are a matter of interpretation On the latest album, the subject matter is the conflict between technology and nature, artificial intelligence and a bit of science fiction. Styx is never outright political—who can blame them in these turbulent times?—but they are also not completely apolitical, says Scotland-born Gowan. Listeners can interpret the songs for themselves. "I think our intention is basically to say something specific in an unspecific way," he says, adding about this approach: "It's the best." Musically, "Circling From Above" is once again a versatile work with polyphonic vocals, classic synthesizers and complex arrangements thanks to the influences of the various songwriters and singers in the group. The intro is inevitably reminiscent of Pink Floyd, but Gowan also said he was influenced by Genesis. The aim was to make a modern classic rock album in the style of the 70s. Styx succeeded in this. Highlights include the melodic rock number "It's Clear" and the folk-rock song "Blue Eyed Raven" sung by Tommy Shaw to the accompaniment of Spanish guitars and mandolins. Music that unfolds slowly The 71-year-old Shaw's voice still sounds like it did in the 70s, when he joined the band in his early 20s and immediately shaped Styx's sound with hits such as "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" and "Too Much Time on My Hands". Such catchy songs are not immediately recognizable on "Circling From Above". But the more you listen to the album, which almost seems like a concept album, the more the music unfolds. However, Styx won't have too much space for the new songs on the upcoming US concert tour. Because they will first perform the eight-song classic album "The Grand Illusion" from 1977 in full. Princess Anne's 75th Birthday Is Being Celebrated with a Royal First

NEED TO KNOW Princess Anne turns 75 on August 15, and the occasion is being celebrated with the first U.K. coin made in her honor King Charles' sister is featured on the coin with her official coat of arms The Princess Royal has often been called the "hardest-working royal" and continues to be a patron of over 300 causesPrincess Anne turns 75 on August 15, and she's getting a royal-worthy present. The Princess Royal is set to be celebrated with the first U.K. coin made in her honor, depicting her portrait — by royal family favorite John Swannell — in which she wears the Aquamarine Pineflower Tiara. The £5 piece also includes Princess Anne's official coat of arms. The coat of arms features three lions in the first and fourth quadrants representing England, a rampant lion in the second quadrant for Scotland and a stringed argent, or harp, in the third quadrant for Ireland. The face of the coin reads, "The Princess Royal - Celebrating 75 Years - Duty and Devotion." The Royal Mint revealed the design on July 18 via social media, writing, "Join us as we celebrate Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal as she marks her milestone 75th birthday with the first U.K. coin made in her honour, featuring her official Coat of Arms and an official portrait taken by John Swannell." View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Royal Mint (@royalmintuk) The second-born child and only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Anne has always distinguished herself within the royal family. She survived an infamous kidnapping attempt in 1974 and became the first British royal to compete in the Olympics in 1976 as an equestrian. Princess Anne married Captain Mark Phillips in 1973, and they share two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall. The couple declined royal titles for their children, stating they wanted them to have as normal lives as possible. "I think it was probably easier for them, and I think most people would argue that there are downsides to having titles," Princess Anne told Vanity Fair in 2020. "So I think that was probably the right thing to do." Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more! In 1987, the Queen gave her the title of Princess Royal, a lifetime title. She is only the seventh Princess Royal to hold the honor since it was introduced in the 17th century. Anne and Mark divorced in 1992, and that same year, she married Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. As a working royal, Anne has followed in her mother's footsteps in terms of taking on a wide range of duties. She has frequently been called the "hardest working royal" and still serves as a patron of over 300 charities, organizations and military regiments on behalf of her older brother, King Charles. Despite her royal poise and dedication to the crown, Princess Anne has proven she can still be a cheeky younger sister to the reigning monarch. While hosting a forum for over 100 organizations at Buckingham Palace last month, the Princess Royal expressed her gratitude before adding a quick jab at her older brother. "I'm not here because this was my choice," Anne told the crowd. "You very kindly asked me to become patron of your organizations, so it's an honor for me to have all of you here." She added with a grin, "I would just like to make the point that we are very fortunate that His Majesty has allowed us to use Buckingham Palace for this event tonight — and I need to say that, it does help."
