Iraq and OPEC+ members plan to raise oil output in July

Iraqi News2 days ago

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Eight OPEC+ member countries, including Iraq, met virtually on Saturday to review global market dynamics and outlook.
The eight OPEC+ countries, which previously announced further voluntary adjustments in April and November 2023, are Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, the UAE, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman, according to OPEC+.
The eight member countries plan to implement an output modification of 411,000 barrels per day in July 2025, in accordance with the decision made in December 2024. This decision allows for a gradual and flexible return to the previously agreed voluntary adjustments of 2.2 million barrels per day, starting in April 2025.
The planned gradual increases may be postponed or reversed if market conditions fluctuate. This flexibility will enable the organization to maintain its commitment to oil market stability.
The eight OPEC+ countries also stated that this strategy will allow member countries to hasten their compensation.
The eight countries reaffirmed their commitment to achieving full compliance with the Declaration of Cooperation, including the extra optional output adjustments that were agreed to be reviewed by the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee (JMMC) at its 53rd meeting in April 2024.
OPEC+ members reiterated their plan to completely compensate for any overproduction volume since January 2024. They will meet monthly to discuss market circumstances, compliance, and compensation, with their next meeting to be held on July 6, 2025, to decide on August production levels.

Iraq advances major rail rehabilitation & Development Road project

Baghdad ( – Iraq's Ministry of Transport is making significant strides in rehabilitating its national railway network and advancing the strategic Development Road project, spokesperson Maytham Al-Safi announced. These efforts mark a new phase for Iraq's transport sector. Al-Safi highlighted the completion and reopening of 12 key railway lines, some after decades of disuse, including the Qayyarah refinery line in Mosul and the Baghdad-Fallujah passenger line. New projects are also underway, such as the Basra-Shalamcheh rail link with Spanish firm Imathia Construcción, vital for passenger transport. Additionally, 15 locomotives were rehabilitated in 2024. Regarding the ambitious Development Road, Al-Safi confirmed consultancy contracts have been signed with firms like BTP Engineering Consultants and Oliver Wyman for financial advisory. The project's route through 10 governorates has been approved, and cadastral maps for southern sections delivered. Full project details for the Development Road are expected by the end of 2025, preparing it for presentation to major international companies. These initiatives aim to modernize Iraq's transport infrastructure and boost regional connectivity.

Iraq signs $200 million deal with British firm to build baby formula plant

Baghdad ( – The Iraq Development Fund and Britain-based Agrium Capital signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday to set up the first modern baby formula plant in Iraq. During a ceremony held in Baghdad to sign the MoU, director of the Iraq Development Fund, Mohammed Al-Najjar, stated that the step is critical for the future of Iraqi youth, as Iraq sees an annual growth in the number of births that exceeds one million children, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported. Many imported brands of baby formula have little nutritional content; thus, this initiative is essential for the health of Iraqi infants and future generations, according to Al-Najjar. The Iraqi official explained that the plant will be built in Iraq and will use locally produced raw materials, such as milk, to manufacture premium branded baby formula with excellent nutritional content. Al-Najjar illustrated that Iraq not only relies on imported infant formula but also lacks a comprehensive mechanism for verifying its quality. Having a facility inside the country allows Iraqis to derive economic benefits from the country's cattle while also ensuring excellent quality control. Agrium Capital works on projects in many countries. The firm employs roughly 3,000 people and has considerable experience in producing infant formula, thanks to its various specialized plants across the world. With a capital investment of more than $200 million, the factory is intended to be extremely sophisticated. It is expected to have a manufacturing capacity of up to 25,000 tons, which is sufficient to meet 80 to 85 percent of the Iraqi market's requirements.

Iraq's foreign reserves surpass $100 billion

Baghdad ( – The director of the Investment Department in the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI), Mohammed Younis, revealed on Monday that foreign reserves surpassed $100 billion. In a statement to the state-run news agency (INA), Younis explained that the country has a large reserve of gold, exceeding 163 tons. Iraq's foreign reserves are managed in accordance with thoroughly planned policies based on highly secure standards and invested in safe financial products that yield appropriate returns, according to Younis. The CBI disclosed last month that its official reserves fell by more than 11 trillion Iraqi dinars ($8.39 billion) in a single year. According to the CBI's most recent report on financial and monetary indicators in Iraq for February 2025, the bank's official reserves reached 127.20 trillion Iraqi dinars ($97.12 billion) in February, a decrease of 8.21 percent compared to the same period in 2024, when reserves reached 138.570 trillion Iraqi dinars ($105.8 billion). Earlier in May, the CBI reported a drop in its net foreign reserves along with a modest decrease in its domestic debt for January 2025. The CBI's net foreign reserves in January 2025 were 128.97 trillion Iraqi dinars ($98.5 billion). This figure represents a decrease of 1.41 percent compared to December 2024, when the CBI's foreign reserves were equivalent to 130.18 trillion Iraqi dinars ($99.44 billion). Foreign reserves give extensive coverage of the monetary base, as well as financial indicators such as trade and foreign obligations. Iraq, the world's fifth-largest oil producer, can rapidly and effectively boost its foreign exchange reserves thanks to steady international financial flows.
