5 Jimmy O. Yang movies and shows to watch if you aren't going to his Hong Kong stand-up show

Time Out20-05-2025

How did the scramble for Jimmy O. Yang tickets go for you? If you managed to grab tickets to see the Hong Kong-American comedian's first Asian show, then good for you! If, however, you're part of the many fans who were left disappointed, then at least we're in the same boat. Read on for a list of movies and TV shows to watch starring O. Yang – at least you'll still get some chuckles this way!
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Arguably the one movie that put Jimmy O. Yang on most people's radars. This romcom box office hit put Singapore on everyone's travel bucket list, and was the first film out of a major Hollywood studio to feature a majority cast of Chinese descent. For those who haven't yet seen it (where have you been hiding?) the film follows Rachel Chu (played by Constance Wu) who meets her boyfriend Nick's (Henry Golding) family, only to find out that they're wealthy enough to be modern-day Singaporean royalty. Jimmy O. Yang stars as Bernard Tai, Nick's obnoxious friend.
Love Hard (2021)
Christmastime is full of cheesy movies, and this one should be on your list. A portmanteau of two of the most-loved Christmas movies – Love Actually and Die Hard – Love Hard follows Natalie (played by Nina Dobrev) who travels to surprise her online crush for Christmas, only to find she has been catfished. Josh is actually Jimmy O. Yang, using photos of his hunky friend Tag (Darren Barnet), but he asks Natalie to pretend to be his girlfriend for the holidays in return for setting her up with Tag. Obviously, misunderstandings and hilarity ensue, wrapped up with a sweet ending.
The Monkey King (2023)
There have been many adaptations of the classic Chinese story Journey to the West, but this is a new animated rendition for Netflix that was selected as the closing film at the 22nd New York Asian Film Festival, and also features a host of Asian-American actors in its cast. O. Yang voices the titular character of the Monkey King, who sets out on a riotous journey to prove his worth, challenge the gods, and gain immortality. A fun action-packed romp that delves into the back story of one of the most well-known characters in Chinese culture.
The Opening Act (2020)
This movie is probably the closest you'll get to seeing O. Yang's comedy show from home, since he stars as Will Chu, a young man who wants to become a stand-up comedian. He later has the opportunity to emcee a comedy show and open for his stand-up hero Billy G (played by Cedric the Entertainer), and has to decide whether to continue his safe life path or throw caution to the wind and pursue his passion. The cast of The Opening Act features plenty of other American comedians and comedic actors such as Ken Jeong, Alex Moffat, Russell Peters, Iliza Shlesinger, Bill Burr, and more.
Interior Chinatown (2024)
This Hulu comedy-drama series is based on Charles Yu's novel of the same name, and follows Willis Wu, a waiter at a Chinese restaurant named the Golden Palace. Unbeknownst to him, he is actually just a background character in a fictional police crime drama, literally labelled sad things as 'Generic Asian Man' or 'Background Oriental Male'. But when Wu decides to investigate his brother's disappearance, he starts to uncover secrets and understand the machinations behind his fake Chinatown. Interior Chinatown also sees O. Yang reuniting with his Crazy Rich Asians costar Ronny Chieng, who plays Fatty Choi, Wu's best friend.

Netflix star left in agony with broken leg after terrifying bike accident

NETFLIX and Skins star Sebastian de Souza has shared photos from his hospital bed after getting into a serious bike accident. The 32-year-old actor – who has appeared in The Life List, Medici, Normal People and The Great – posted his update via his Instagram account. 7 7 Despite the nasty injury, breaking his leg, Sebastian made light of the situation, posing in his bed and later down the pub with a pint, while still in his medical gown. He wrote: 'New Hair! New Normal! Dear Souzles, forgive the radio silence! Three weeks ago I broke my leg falling off my bike.' He credited 'very very kind people' who helped get him to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, as well as the team who looked after him once at A&E. 'You know who you are and I will never be able to repay you,' he commented. Praising the 'extraordinary team', he said: 'the gorgeous paramedics, doctors, nurses, domestic and administrative staff, all of whom made me feel so welcome and comfortable and safe. 'As it turned out, I had a tibial plateau fracture (more commonly known as bike leg) and needed an operation.' 'St Mary's is one of the best trauma centres on planet earth and so, naturally, there were lots of poor people with injuries far graver than mine queuing up for operations that needed doing quickly, which meant my mangled knee would have to wait a little bit before getting patched up,' he continued. 'And so it was that I ended up spending the most wonderful, inspiring, insightful, love-filled fortnight on St Mary's Valentine Ellis and Zachary Cope wards, waiting for my surgery!' Sebastian noted: 'I have never been treated with such kindness, care, respect, sensitivity and love, nor have I ever seen such professionalism and compassion shown so consistently by anyone to everyone, ever.' 'Thank God for @nhsengland @nhsenglandldn,' he said. 'As far as I'm concerned the NHS is the greatest institution ever invented and should be supported, protected and celebrated at all costs. Forever.' 7 7 Apologising for the long message, Sebastian went on to praise his family and friends for supporting him 'through this fascinating new chapter'. Friends and fans were quick to send the actor their well wishes, with Sarah Parish joking: 'Darling!!! You poor love. I hope you gave your best Leslie Phillips from 'Carry on Nurse'' Another added: 'You 'll bounce back in no time Sending you lots of love' While a fan account for The Life List wrote: 'My sincerest wishes for a speedy recovery to you, beloved Sebastian!' 7 7 7

EXCLUSIVE Rickey Smiley reveals he has no issue with 'offending people' as he details list of taboo topics in comedy special

Rickey Smiley is back - and has declared that he is funnier than ever before. 'I haven't done a special in 12 years, so I'm really excited about it,' he told Smiley - whose new special Fool-ish is now available to stream on Hulu - describes his latest project as 'funny, animated, with a lot of energy.' '[It's] really physical,' he quips. 'Something that I think everybody would enjoy.' Smiley, 56, says 'life has brought a lot of changes' since his last special, something which he delves into in Fool-ish. Joking that he is now 'older, and has a beard,' he also spoke about the changes having grown children - and recently discovering he is the biological father to six-year-old twin girls - has had on his comedy. 'I talk about that in the special as well,' he assures fans. 'It's a great special to be in your 40s and 50s, [and for] people in their 20s and 30s or whatever.' 'I think I'm funnier now, than I was before,' he declared. 'Because at this age, you say whatever on your mind and you don't care who gets mad.' 'When you have more life behind you than in front of you, you don't care,' he laughed. Smiley, who lost his 32-year-old son Brandon to an accidental overdose in January 2023, said performing his show felt like they were on stage together. 'My son was a performer, he was funny. He had his own style, and uniqueness on stage,' he reflected. 'I'm just glad that we were able to share and do the same thing,' he said passionately. For Smiley, who has been performing in comedy shows since the 1980s, there were no nerves when it came to curating the show. 'I'd done so many shows and comedy clubs, three shows Saturday, two shows Friday - do the morning show every single morning,' he listed. He joked it was like exercising the comedy muscles in your brain, and had 'a lot of fun' coming up with what to include in the special. 'I've been performing for years, and if you figure out if you're going to do a special, you go ahead and let's put a special set together,' he explained. Smiley, who lost his 32-year-old son Brandon (pictured) to an accidental overdose in January 2023, said performing his show felt like they were on stage together Smiley says that means 'doing things that people will remember.' The comedian added there may be some humor that may offend people, he deems his content universally engaging. 'You say what needs to be said and it's funny and everybody relates to it, and you're only saying what everybody's thinking anyway, so we just bold enough to say it,' the comedian shared. He revealed his potentially taboo topics include 'talking about little people' and his favorite TV show - My 600 Pound Life. 'People might get offended,' he admitted. 'But hey, it's funny, they're going to watch it.'
