Search called off for crew of Houthi-hit ship, maritime agencies say

ATHENS - Maritime agencies Diaplous and Ambrey said on July 13 that they had ended their search for the remaining crew of the Eternity C cargo ship that was
attacked by Yemen's Houthi militants last week .
The decision was made at the request of the vessel's owner, both agencies said.
The Liberia-flagged, Greek-operated Eternity C sank on the morning of July 9 following attacks over two consecutive days, according to sources at security companies involved in the rescue operation.
Ten of the ship's complement of 22 crew and three guards
were rescued . The remaining 15 are considered missing, including five who are believed to be dead, maritime security sources said. The Houthis said they had rescued some of the crew.
The crew included 21 Filipinos and one Russian. Three armed guards were also on board, including one Greek and one Indian, who were both rescued.
'The decision to end the search has been taken by the vessel's owner reluctantly but it believes that, in all the circumstances, the priority must now be to get the 10 souls safely recovered alive ashore,' maritime risk management firm Diaplous and British security firm Ambrey said in a joint statement.
The Houthis also claimed responsibility for a similar assault last Sunday targeting another ship, the Magic Seas. All crew from the Magic Seas were rescued before it sank.

The strikes on the two ships marked a resumption of a campaign by the Iran-aligned fighters who attacked more than 100 ships from November 2023 to December 2024 in what they said was solidarity with the Palestinians.

The International Federation of American Football (IFAF), in partnership with the National Football League (NFL), announced on Monday that the men's and women's medal games are scheduled for Friday evening, July 21, and Saturday afternoon, July 22, at BMO Stadium near downtown Los Angeles. The announcement comes as senior IFAF and NFL delegations visit Los Angeles for the first official meetings with Games organizers, marking exactly three years to the day before the LA28 Opening Ceremony. "Flag football will definitely be a hot ticket at the Games," IFAF President Pierre Trochet told Reuters on Monday. "We're going to be at a great stadium right in the heart of the city and we're going to have fantastic players on the field with NFL players available." Flag football is a non-contact variation of American football in which players wear flags attached to their waists. Instead of tackling, defensive players must remove a flag from the ball carrier to end a play. The sport is played on a smaller field with fewer players per side. UK retail spending bounced back in June, trade body says

The British Retail Consortium - whose members are mostly larger stores - said spending was 3.1 per cent higher in cash terms than a year earlier, up from a 1.0 per cent annual increase in May and the second-biggest rise this year. 'The soaring temperatures increased sales of electric fans while sports and leisure equipment was boosted by both the weather and the start of Wimbledon (tennis tournament),' BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said. England experienced its hottest June since detailed records began in 1884, while average temperatures across the whole of the United Kingdom were the second-highest on record. June's spending growth will bring some cheer for retailers after May's official data - which covers a broader range of stores than the BRC figures - showed the biggest monthly drop in sales volumes since December 2023. Official data published last week showed the economy as a whole shrank unexpectedly in May, adding to pressures on finance minister Rachel Reeves. The BRC said higher retail spending partly reflected higher food prices. Spending at supermarkets rose by an annual 4.1 per cent compared with a 2.2 per cent rise for non-food stores.
