A vessel said to be Greek-operated, Liberia-flagged Eternity C is seen sinking in a footage released by Yemen's Houthis, in the Red Sea, on July 9, 2025.
ATHENS - Maritime agencies Diaplous and Ambrey said on July 13 that they had ended their search for the remaining crew of the Eternity C cargo ship that was
attacked by Yemen's Houthi militants last week .
The decision was made at the request of the vessel's owner, both agencies said.
The Liberia-flagged, Greek-operated Eternity C sank on the morning of July 9 following attacks over two consecutive days, according to sources at security companies involved in the rescue operation.
Ten of the ship's complement of 22 crew and three guards
were rescued . The remaining 15 are considered missing, including five who are believed to be dead, maritime security sources said. The Houthis said they had rescued some of the crew.
The crew included 21 Filipinos and one Russian. Three armed guards were also on board, including one Greek and one Indian, who were both rescued.
'The decision to end the search has been taken by the vessel's owner reluctantly but it believes that, in all the circumstances, the priority must now be to get the 10 souls safely recovered alive ashore,' maritime risk management firm Diaplous and British security firm Ambrey said in a joint statement.
The Houthis also claimed responsibility for a similar assault last Sunday targeting another ship, the Magic Seas. All crew from the Magic Seas were rescued before it sank.

Australia PM Albanese to discuss trade, security in meeting with China's Xi

Find out what's new on ST website and app. BEIJING - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang in Beijing on Tuesday, where he said resources trade, energy transition and security tensions are key topics for discussion. Albanese is due to meet Xi ahead of an annual leaders dialogue with Li, and later attend a business roundtable at the Great Hall of the People. Albanese said on Monday he looked forward to a "constructive dialogue" with the Chinese leaders. Australia, which regards the United States its major security ally, has pursued a China policy of "cooperate where we can, disagree where we must" under Albanese. Australia has expressed concern at China's military build-up and the jailing of an Australian writer, while Beijing has criticised Canberra's increased screening of foreign investment in critical minerals and Albanese's pledge to return a Chinese-leased port to Australian ownership. Chinese state media outlet Xinhua said the relationship between the two countries, which have complementary economies, was steadily improving. Australia's exports to China, its largest trading partner, span agriculture and energy but are dominated by iron ore, and Albanese has traveled with executives from mining giants Rio Tinto, BHP, and Fortescue, who met with Chinese steel industry officials on Monday, as part of a six-day visit. Flag football to make primetime Olympic debut at LA28

Find out what's new on ST website and app. LOS ANGELES - Flag football will take center stage during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, after organizers confirmed the sport's medal matches will be held in primetime slots in its first-ever Olympic appearance. The International Federation of American Football (IFAF), in partnership with the National Football League (NFL), announced on Monday that the men's and women's medal games are scheduled for Friday evening, July 21, and Saturday afternoon, July 22, at BMO Stadium near downtown Los Angeles. The announcement comes as senior IFAF and NFL delegations visit Los Angeles for the first official meetings with Games organizers, marking exactly three years to the day before the LA28 Opening Ceremony. "Flag football will definitely be a hot ticket at the Games," IFAF President Pierre Trochet told Reuters on Monday. "We're going to be at a great stadium right in the heart of the city and we're going to have fantastic players on the field with NFL players available." Flag football is a non-contact variation of American football in which players wear flags attached to their waists. Instead of tackling, defensive players must remove a flag from the ball carrier to end a play. The sport is played on a smaller field with fewer players per side. The inclusion of flag football in LA28 follows a vote by NFL owners allowing NFL players to participate in the Olympic competition. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Organizers hope to capture the excitement of "Friday Night Lights," a cherished American tradition, and generate iconic moments for the sport's Olympic launch. "We could not dream of a better setup to start our debut in the Olympic movement and Olympic journey," he said. The IFAF delegation, including managing director Andy Fuller and senior NFL executives, is set to tour Exposition Park and other venues over a three-day visit. The group will also meet with key LA28 organizing committee members and attend the launch of a new NFL flag football brand campaign, which features Olympic gymnastics champion Jordan Chiles and flag football athletes from Australia and the U.S. REUTERS

UK retail spending bounced back in June, trade body says

Find out what's new on ST website and app. LONDON - British shoppers spent more freely last month as unusually hot weather boosted demand for fans and summer clothing after weak sales growth in May, though part of the increase reflected higher food prices, industry data showed on July 15. The British Retail Consortium - whose members are mostly larger stores - said spending was 3.1 per cent higher in cash terms than a year earlier, up from a 1.0 per cent annual increase in May and the second-biggest rise this year. 'The soaring temperatures increased sales of electric fans while sports and leisure equipment was boosted by both the weather and the start of Wimbledon (tennis tournament),' BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said. England experienced its hottest June since detailed records began in 1884, while average temperatures across the whole of the United Kingdom were the second-highest on record. June's spending growth will bring some cheer for retailers after May's official data - which covers a broader range of stores than the BRC figures - showed the biggest monthly drop in sales volumes since December 2023. Official data published last week showed the economy as a whole shrank unexpectedly in May, adding to pressures on finance minister Rachel Reeves. The BRC said higher retail spending partly reflected higher food prices. Spending at supermarkets rose by an annual 4.1 per cent compared with a 2.2 per cent rise for non-food stores. Singapore Man charged over distributing nearly 3 tonnes of vapes in one day in Bishan, Ubi Avenue 3 Singapore Man allegedly attacks woman with knife at Kallang Wave Mall, to be charged with attempted murder Singapore Ex-cop charged after he allegedly went on MHA portal, unlawfully shared info with man Food prices rose 3.7 per cent in the year to June, the biggest increase since the 12 months to March 2024, in contrast to a 1.2 per cent drop in non-food prices. 'Sales growth continues to be predominately driven by inflation with volumes under sustained pressure,' said Ms Sarah Bradbury, chief executive of the Institute of Grocery Distribution, which provides data to the BRC. Separate figures from Barclays showed that overall consumer spending dropped by 0.1 per cent year-on-year in June compared with a 1.0 per cent rise in May. The bank's debit and credit card data showed weaker retail spending growth than the BRC numbers. Bright spots included purchases of furniture - reflecting a surge in property sales earlier this year - and sales of sunscreen and hay fever medication. 'Consumers are remaining cautious and maintaining savings buffers,' Barclays' chief UK economist Jack Meaning said. 'We expect this to lead to limited GDP growth for the remainder of this year, before falling interest rates and a stronger sense of certainty drive a return to growth next year.' REUTERS
