Pierre Poilievre's parliamentary comeback rides on by-election in River-Crowfoot

Time of India15 hours ago
Conservative Leader
Pierre Poilievre
is expected to secure a seat in the
House of Commons
today after a
by-election
in Alberta's
Battle River-Crowfoot
riding, following the resignation of former MP Damien Kurek. Kurek, who won re-election in April with more than 80 percent of the vote, stepped aside to allow Poilievre to return to
Parliament
after losing his previous seat in Carleton earlier this year.
While victory for Poilievre is widely anticipated in this conservative stronghold, the move has sparked debate over whether a national party leader can adequately represent a riding he has never lived in. Critics argue the strategy prioritizes political optics over local interests, dubbing Poilievre a 'parachute candidate.'
Independent candidate Bonnie Critchley, who resides in Tofield, north of Camrose, has run in protest of what she describes as a stunt undermining
local democracy

Supporters, however, suggest that Poilievre's national profile could bring attention to local issues that backbench MPs historically have been unable to highlight. Residents have expressed mixed reactions as some are enthusiastic about having a party leader as their MP, while others remain skeptical of his ability to devote time to the riding amid leadership duties and parliamentary responsibilities.
The Battle River-Crowfoot riding is Canada's third-largest by area at over 52,000 square kilometers, encompassing
First Nations
communities, oil and gas development, agricultural regions, and Canadian Forces Base Wainwright. Managing such a geographically and socially diverse riding poses challenges even for experienced MPs, a concern for those watching Poilievre's potential tenure.
Live Events
Poilievre's victory will not only return him to Parliament but also influence his standing within the
Conservative Party
ahead of a leadership review scheduled for January 2026, after the party failed to win the April federal election despite leading in early polls throughout 2024.

LoP Saikia urges Shah to review BSF's border monitoring along B'desh

1 2 Guwahati: Assam leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia has expressed doubts over the effectiveness of the Border Security Force (BSF) deployment along the India-Bangladesh border and has urged Union home minister Amit Shah to review and initiate effective border management. His statement came amid state govt acknowledging "pushback" operations undertaken by Assam Police along the Bangladesh border to deport "undocumented Bangladeshi nationals". In a letter sent to Shah on Saturday, Saikia highlighted the recurring "pushback" operations being conducted by the Assam Police since May 2025. Saikia said state govt, on multiple occasions, acknowledged such operations and deportations of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals, which he said "raises critical questions about the efficacy of our border management framework and the current coordination mechanisms". "According to official statements, a new strategy of pushback was announced on May 10-2025, followed by intensive operations from May 23-2025, where over fifty individuals were apprehended. The subsequent operations on May 31, June 8, June 27, July 6, and Aug 3 have led to the repatriation of over three hundred individuals. These recurring operations, despite the deployment of the BSF across the 267.5 km stretch of the Assam-Bangladesh border, suggest that infiltration continues to be a serious challenge," Saikia alleged. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo He added that the situation raises several concerns, including the "effectiveness of BSF" deployment and need for careful assessment of resource allocation in challenging geographical terrain. Saikia said the consistent involvement of Assam Police in direct pushbacks points to coordination gaps between central and state security agencies. Moreover, the senior Congress leader alleged that the conduct of state-level pushbacks, in some cases reportedly without Foreigners Tribunal processes, may create legal ambiguities and have possible diplomatic implications with Bangladesh. Saikia sought the home ministry's intervention to ensure a robust and well-coordinated approach. "A comprehensive review of BSF deployment and strategies, an enhanced coordination protocol between BSF and Assam Police, and a focus on technology-based border surveillance and detection mechanisms would greatly strengthen operational effectiveness. Additionally, proactive diplomatic engagement with Bangladesh to address the root causes of infiltration is essential to maintain bilateral trust," he wrote. Saikia suggested that clear and uniform guidelines regarding jurisdiction and standard operating procedures for handling infiltrators would help align state-level actions with national policy. SAD rebel faction seeks reopening of Kartarpur Corridor

1 2 Amritsar: On the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, Harpreet Singh, president of the reorganised Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), invoked the painful legacy of Partition, calling it a "religious injustice" that continues to haunt Sikhs. Addressing a gathering, Harpreet Singh said Punjab and Bengal bore the brunt of India's freedom struggle, only to be brutally divided in 1947. "While Delhi celebrated, Punjab burned. The British departure unleashed a wave of hatred that claimed nearly a million lives. Children were butchered, and elders and women, unable to bear the horror, took their own lives," he said. He lamented that Sikhs were forced to abandon their sacred gurdwaras in Pakistan and resettle in Punjab in India. "We left behind our soul," he said, referring to revered shrines such as Sri Nankana Sahib, Gurdwara Panja Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib, Dera Sahib in Lahore, and Sacha Sauda. "Even today, Sikhs cannot freely visit these sites. The Kartarpur Corridor gave us hope, but it too became a victim of politics and diplomatic tensions. " Drawing a comparison, Harpreet Singh said, "Muslims can go for Hajj without visa denials or border restrictions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo But a Sikh must beg for a visa to bow before Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthplace. This is religious injustice on a global scale." He also spoke of elderly Sikhs who died with unfulfilled dreams of revisiting their childhood homes across the border, and similarly, elders in Pakistan who longed to return to ancestral villages in India. "Those responsible for this pain will never find peace—not even after death. The souls of the 10 lakh martyrs will not rest until justice is done," he said. Appeal to reopen Kartarpur Corridor ahead of Jyoti Jot Diwas In a related statement, officiating Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj urged the central government to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor ahead of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Jyoti Jot Diwas. He recalled the horrors of 1947, when Punjab witnessed massacres and displacement. "Sikhs on the western side of Punjab lost their fertile lands and over 200 sacred gurdwaras, including Sri Nankana Sahib. This grief is embedded in our daily prayers," he said. The corridor, opened during the 550th Prakash Gurpurb of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, had enabled emotional reunions at Kartarpur Sahib. However, recent Indo-Pak tensions led to its closure. "With Jyoti Jot Diwas approaching, reopening the corridor would allow the sangat to pay homage at this sacred site. We urge the government to act swiftly," he said.
