Arne Slot says Liverpool 'are better at creating and getting promising situations than last season' following Community Shield defeat
Despite his side losing their advantage twice in the fixture and being unsuccessful on the day, Arne Slot is still full of belief for the season ahead.
'I don't think there was a main issue unless you mention the penalties, of course that doesn't help but I think in general it was a game where twice we went 1-0 up and in my opinion we controlled the game until it was 2-2,' he said.
'I think all pre-season we saw how we were able to create more and we were more comfortable on the ball. We created more opportunities, more chances, we donated more. We are better in creating and getting promising situations than we were last season, in my opinion. An important thing about last season is we won by one goal, today we scored twice against Palace – so that's a positive.'
Prior to kick off, both teams paid respects to Diogo Jota and André Silva with a minutes silence. Unfortunately a minority of Crystal Palace fans did not adhere to the silence, but Slot was hesitant to make a quick judgement on the incident.
'I'm a positive person and I try to have faith in the world, I don't think there was any bad intent with the fan,' he said. 'He could have been excited about his team and not realised the minutes silence.'
Hugo Ekitite found the net for the first time in a Liverpool shirt, and earned some praise from his boss.
'It's always nice to score a goal, not just for him but also for Germany football when you start your career in a new club,' Slot said. 'It would've been nicer to win the game of football, I think that's more important than scoring but he had a good impact.
'He had a good game today, that's for sure.'
Liverpool will return to action when they host the Premier League curtain-raiser against Bournemouth on Friday August 15th.

Ederson training ground status revealed amid Galatasaray exit talk
Manchester City have continued to integrate Ederson into their first-team training sessions despite ongoing talk around a potential swoop from Galatasaray. The 31-year-old's future at the Etihad Stadium has been a topic of speculation since he failed to engineer a transfer to the Saudi Pro League last summer, with Manchester City understood to have demanded £50 million for the six-time Premier League winner in 2024. City have overhauled their goalkeeping department this summer following the appointment of Hugo Viana as director of football, with James Trafford returning to his boyhood club for a deal worth £27 million and Marcus Bettinelli replacing Scott Carson as third-choice goalkeeper. Ederson was in and out of Manchester City's starting XI last season owing to dips in form at various stages of the 2024-25 campaign, with Stefan Ortega Moreno often stepping in for the Brazil international. However, as he enters the final year of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium, Ederson has attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe as Manchester City await a resolution on their first-choice goalkeeper's future ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline. Pep Guardiola is believed to be considering Ederson part of his plans for the upcoming campaign, with Ederson also clarifying in July that his head remains at Manchester City amid strong interest from Turkey and Saudi Arabia. However, it has been reported that the former Benfica man has agreed personal terms to move to Galatasaray should City allow a move. Sources at the Etihad Stadium have indicated that City do not wish to sell Ederson but will reluctantly sanction a transfer for the right price. It remains to be seen how the coming weeks play out for Manchester City's goalkeeping department, which could witness the superstar addition of Gianluigi Donnarumma should Ederson secure his desired move away from England. However, Ederson has trained with the Manchester City first-team squad as normal ahead of their 2025-26 Premier League opener against Wolves at the Molineux Stadium on Saturday, which is likely to see the Brazilian start in goal ahead of Trafford. City are understood to have agreed personal terms with Donnarumma and will step up their pursuit of the 26-year-old Italy international should Ederson express a desire to leave, with Ortega Moreno also expected to complete a permanent transfer in the coming weeks. The Blues have agreed a £30 million deal for James McAtee to join Nottingham Forest, with Jack Grealish also moving to Everton on a season-long loan as Viana and co trim Guardiola's bloated first-team squad before the transfer deadline. Having made six new signings this summer, Manchester City and Pep Guardiola will be relishing the challenging of reclaiming the Premier League back from Liverpool and winning the competition for a fifth time in six seasons.

Tennis duo delighted to win national doubles title at Wimbledon
Northampton's Will Heathfield and Wellingborough's Connor Bush were delighted to lift silverware on the manicured lawns of Wimbledon as they enjoyed an unforgettable experience at SW19. Heathfield, 26, and Bush, 28, featured in the national finals at Play Your Way to Wimbledon, powered by Vodafone, which is the UK's largest individual mass participation tennis competition and is delivered by Vodafone in partnership with the LTA and the All England Club. Thousands of players took part in the qualifying stages this year, leading to county and regional finals in June and July, with the winners progressing to the national finals on Wimbledon's Aorangi Courts last week. The pair claimed victory in the men's doubles final to win the competition and revealed it was an experience they will never forget. Heathfield said: "I don't think it's really sunk in yet. We were just happy to be here and play, so to win it is just a cherry on top of the cake. 'When it sinks in, I will probably feel a lot better about it but at the moment I'm just in shock. I've been to Wimbledon to watch before but never played here so I really enjoyed it. 'It's a really special opportunity. You don't get these opportunities very often so you have to make the most of it and getting to the final allowed us to play more games on the grass. It felt like our game improved every time we played a match.' Bush added: 'It's great to be here and play on a great court. I was here last year and I got to the group stages and got knocked out in the last game so it was great to be back again.' This year's tournament delivered over 10,000 playing opportunities with thousands of singles and doubles players taking part at 800 venues, leading to county and area finals in June and July, with the winners progressing to the national finals on the All England Club's Aorangi Courts from 3 – 9 August 2025. The competition aims to broaden playing opportunities and to inspire people of all ages and abilities to play tennis and follow in the footsteps of their tennis heroes by competing for a chance to play on Wimbledon's iconic courts. In addition to 14 and under singles, 18 and under doubles and adult doubles draws, the categories also included wheelchair (adult and juniors), learning disability and visually impaired competitions. The national finals also saw the return of popular para-standing and deaf tennis exhibition matches held during the week. World No.1 wheelchair doubles partners and Vodafone ambassadors Alfie Hewett OBE and Gordon Reid OBE were in attendance to cheer on the players at SW19 and offer their experience and advice. 'We would have loved to have had something like this when we were younger and playing'' said Hewett. 'Play your Way to Wimbledon is a massive event for someone to pick up a racket for the first time or start playing again if they haven't for a while. 'It's about being active at grassroots level, making friends and new tennis partners and that is the beauty of events like this.' Reid added: 'We want tennis to be available and accessible to everybody and get as many people as possible enjoying the sport. 'This event encapsulates that perfectly and we're proud to be a part of it.'
