Proposal to increase of elected reps in Sarawak timely, says academician

Dr Jayum Jawan
KUCHING (July 8): The increase in the number of elected people's representatives in Sarawak is timely based on the need to review representation in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), says an academician.
This is usually facilitated by the need to study constituency size and population increase, says Datuk Prof Dr Jayum Jawan, a fellow of Academy of Sciences Malaysia cum adjunct professor of the Institute of Borneo Studies of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).
'Sarawak has been grossly misrepresented. We have a rural constituency that is as huge as the state of Pahang and yet, it is represented by a single member Parliament.
'Suggestions from Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang might be a little too late.
'He was reported to have suggested that at least eight state seats and one parliamentary seat should come from the Tamin-Selanggau area.
'This could be political rhetoric because if he really felt so, he should have moved the suggestion through his party, PRS (Parti Rakyat Sarawak), and have that brought to the attention of the GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak, the state's ruling coalition),' he said in a statement yesterday.
Jayum also acknowledged the questioning by members of the Opposition over the motive of increasing the number of DUN Sarawak seats by 15.
'The drawing of the constituencies is claimed (by the Opposition) to be 'unfair', 'unnecessary' and 'politically motivated'.
'The vote disparities between constituencies in Sarawak were compared to those in Australia in arguing this point.
'But that same argument is weak because certain constituencies in Rajang River Basin are huge and yet, each has only one representative.
'Some urban areas such as Kuching and Sibu have several seats, both state and Parliament.'
On Monday, DUN Sarawak passed the Composition of Membership Bill 2025 on a special one-day sitting to approve the size increase of the DUN by 17 seats, from the present 82 to 99.
The last redelineation exercise in Sarawak was held by the Election Commission (EC) in 2015, after the DUN approved the size increase by 11 seats to 82 in 2014.

Dozens of opposition figures arrested in Turkey

Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested in March and subsequently imprisoned. (EPA Images pic) ISTANBUL : Turkish police arrested 40 people today in the opposition stronghold of Istanbul, including the mayor of the central district of Beyoglu and several of his close advisers, Turkish media reported. The latest wave of arrests over 'corruption' allegations is part of a months-long crackdown targeting the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, considered the biggest political rival to president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was arrested in March and subsequently imprisoned. His arrest sparked unprecedented protests in the country not seen in more than a decade. In addition to Imamoglu, nine of Istanbul's 26 CHP district mayors have been arrested and imprisoned since October, most of them on corruption charges, accusations they deny. According to analysts, the government is attempting to undermine the CHP, which emerged as the clear winner in local elections in the spring of 2024 at the expense of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party.

Premier: Sarawak mulls blended finance facility to fund energy transition

He said this would enhance the bankability of these projects and unlock broader participation from the private sector and development banks. 'Let me be clear — realising this vision will require deep collaboration. We call upon development partners, private investors and financial institutions to join us in shaping a resilient, inclusive and investable energy transition for Sarawak,' he said. He said this during the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability's Public Industry Engagement Day and the launching ceremony of the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here yesterday. Abang Johari said that to fully unlock SET-P's potential, Sarawak needed to first strengthen its short-term investment landscape. 'Energy transition opportunities in Sarawak can be broadly categorised into three categories.. 'Firstly, commercially-viable projects with market-rate returns include utility-scale solar, hydropower, grid modernisation and much of our natural gas infrastructure. These investments are generally bankable and capable of attracting private capital without significant intervention,' he said. He said the second category were public-good initiatives with no direct financial returns, which includes critical enablers such as workforce upskilling, public awareness programmes and sustainable urban transport systems. 'While they do not yield commercial returns, they are foundational to ensuring a just and inclusive energy transition,' he added. Abang Johari said the third category was emerging solutions with below-market returns, which encompass 'nascent but strategically vital technologies' such as clean hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), energy efficiency and low-carbon transport. 'Despite their long-term potential, these initiatives currently struggle to attract private financing due to higher risk profiles and uncertain returns, particularly in emerging markets such as Sarawak,' said Abang Johari. He said today's event was a critical step in fostering the collective ownership and shared responsibility needed for effective implementation. 'By working together, we can develop the enabling infrastructure, drive innovation through research and development and cultivate a highly skilled green workforce prepared to lead Sarawak into a resilient, low-carbon energy future,' he said. Also present were State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi; and Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni. File motion against PM if you must, but stop making excuses, PH Youth tells Opposition

PETALING JAYA: Angkatan Muda Harapan (AMH) has challenged the Opposition to immediately table a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister in the Dewan Rakyat. Pakatan Harapan's Youth wing said the Opposition should stop making excuses and putting on an act. "If they do not dare to table the motion, or fail to pass it, they should accept the outcome. "They should then play their role in providing checks and balances constructively and responsibly," it said in a statement on Friday (Aug 8). The movement also expressed full support for the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) presented by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last week. "It is a national roadmap that emphasises value-based economic development, institutional reforms, and fair distribution for all Malaysians. "AMH urges all MPs to debate the 13MP in a mature, professional and fact-based manner, and to put forward constructive criticism and suggestions. "Comparing the plan solely based on its thickness without examining its contents is nothing more than cheap politics that does not benefit the country," it said. AMH also urged Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to issue an open apology to the entire disabled (OKU) community over his recent remarks, which it considered insensitive and shameful. "AMH strongly condemns his statement insulting the OKU community in his response to critics. "His remarks send the message that anyone who disagrees with his views deserves to be issued an OKU card. "Using the OKU community as material for political jokes is a despicable and highly irresponsible form of discrimination," it said. AMH added that it would travel nationwide to explain the government's reform agenda to the public through a series of tours, forums and dialogues, stressing the need for the government to stay connected to the people. It also pledged to push for the abolition of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU) through its AUKU Abolition Committee led by AMH chief Woo Kah Leong, and expressed solidarity with PKR youth deputy chief Nabil Halimi, who was sued for RM1mil by PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari. "AMH is also committed to empowering young people, but hopes that the mechanism for implementing the age limit of 30 for youth will be improved in line with the needs of youth associations. "AMH is concerned about the continuity of youth leadership and hopes that the policy will take into account socio-economic realities, the process of leadership capacity transition, and the inclusive involvement of all stakeholders, especially young people," it said.
