NCAA Coaching Carousel: Iona Names NBA Assistant Dan Geriot New Coach
After firing former men's basketball coach Tobin Anderson, Iona wasted no time in naming his replacement.
Iona appointed Dan Geriot after he spent the last nine seasons as an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Pelicans. In addition, Iona is announcing its intentions to hire the first-ever general manager for the program in the upcoming days.
"The landscape of college basketball has changed dramatically over the last couple of years. In order to sustain the success Iona basketball has achieved over several decades, we need a different orientation and structure for the program," said Seamus Carey, Ph.D., Iona president. "Dan Geriot's experience fits the needs of the program well and we are confident that under his guidance, our student-athletes will grow and succeed both on and off the court."
"Dan's background in player development and coaching at a high level makes him a great fit for Iona," said Matthew Glovaski, director of Athletics. "He has a vision for the future of our program and an understanding of what it takes to compete at a high level. We are excited to have him on board and eager to see what he brings to our team."

Geriot was in his 10th NBA season and first with the Pelicans in 2024-25 after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach and director of player development with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was responsible for assisting Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, scouting opponents, developing game plans, and focusing on individual development for frontcourt players.
Over the course of nine seasons with the Cavs, Geriot took on increasing responsibility in coaching roles, including assistant coach (2019-2021), head coach of the G League's Canton Charge (2021-22), assistant/player development coach (2018-19), assistant video coordinator/coaching assistant (2016-18), and seasonal video coordinator during the 2015-16 championship season.
Before his time with the Cavaliers, Geriot coached at the collegiate level as an assistant coach at Campbell University from 2013-2015 and Princeton University from 2011-2013, under head coach Mitch Henderson. During his time on Division I coaching staffs, he contributed to recruiting, scouting, and player skill development.
Geriot's playing career at the University of Richmond from 2006-2011 was marked by his leadership and standout performances. He helped lead the Spiders to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 run in 2011. Over the course of his career, he averaged 10.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 266 assists, finishing with 1,386 points and ranking 17th on Richmond's all-time scoring list. He played professionally in Belgium for Verviers during the 2011-12 season before transitioning to coaching.

CLEVELAND -- Larry Nance Jr. is going to shed some light on why so many NBA players have become big fans of international soccer. The Cleveland Cavaliers forward has teamed up with the Men in Blazers Media Network to launch a digital show called 'Switch the Play,' a weekly program that will feature those NBA players who are soccer aficionados and discuss happenings in the game. The ties between soccer and the NBA have never seemed to run so deep. Many of basketball's top stars — Victor Wembanyama, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, Luka Doncic, James Harden, Joel Embiid and more — make no secret of their fascination with soccer. Wembanyama was on the field for a Paris Saint Germain-Manchester City game in Paris last winter when he and the San Antonio Spurs were there for a pair of games against the Indiana Pacers. The Spurs center also went viral this summer for taking part in pickup soccer games around the world. The fandom goes both ways: Soccer icon Lionel Messi and other Inter Miami stars were at a Miami Heat game in 2024, Real Madrid stars Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe are regulars at NBA games and Butler said last season he's lost count of how many jerseys he's exchanged with soccer standouts at NBA games. The NBA even modeled its NBA Cup in-season tournament in part around what has worked in European soccer regarding in-season trophy play. 'This show will give stars from around the league the opportunity to let fans hear them talk about their soccer fandom, parallels in the two games, and how we see it as professional athletes,' Nance said. Nance played soccer until he was 16 and is now part owner of Premier League club Leeds United — becoming an investor in 2023 along with Indiana guard T.J. McConnell. Now 33, he is entering his 11th NBA season with career averages of 7.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Nance signed with Cleveland as a free agent in July. It's his second stint with the Cavs; he was previously with the club from 2018 through 2021. ___
