Hunt sees progress as Durban City extend unbeaten run
Image: BAckpagepix
Three matches into his stint as head coach of Durban City FC, Gavin Hunt already feels the team is showing signs of improvement based on their performance last week. Two wins and a draw make up his three-match record.
Even though Durban claimed victory last week against Chippa and drew with Golden Arrows on Tuesday night, Hunt believes his side produced the better football and were unfortunate to walk away with just a point.
Durban looked more composed against an attacking Golden Arrows outfit, spending more time on the ball and passing with patience – signs of cool heads, something Hunt also acknowledged when asked about it.

In midfield, Haashim Domingo, Kyle Jurgens and Samkelo Maseko looked more adventurous, pushing the ball forward rather than back-tracking. Durban maintained the positive intent from the previous week, but with more structure in their attacking play.
The Boys in Blue should have held onto their 1-0 lead going into half-time, but conceded when Junior Dion found the net just before the whistle.
The second half opened with a flurry of Arrows attacks, none of which were converted. In the stands, an avid Durban City supporter, widely known as 'Dlamini', worked tirelessly to hype up the crowd and keep the drums rolling.
That energy reverberated onto the pitch, with Durban pressing forward deep into the second half, though they were unable to find the final pass or free-kick delivery to secure a second goal.

All Blacks coach Robertson expecting 'fiery' clash with Springboks in Auckland
All Blacks coach Scott Robertson expects a fiery contest when the Springboks return to their strengths at Eden Park in September. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix All Blacks coach Scott Robertson says the Springboks will return to their famed strengths against Australia on Saturday after running themselves into the ground at Ellis Park in a 38–22 loss to the Wallabies. Robertson pointed out that the Boks' adventurous approach opened them up to errors, allowing Australia back into the game after South Africa had raced to an early 22–0 lead. Further, he is under no illusion about the style of play the Boks will adopt when they tackle the All Blacks in a much-anticipated Rugby Championship clash at Eden Park on 6 September. Next Stay Close ✕ Robertson told reporters that a 'fiery' encounter is guaranteed when the Boks attempt to end the New Zealanders' 31-year winning streak at the Auckland fortress. The Springboks have won just once at Eden Park — back in 1937 when Philip Nel's team secured a series win at the ground. Robertson, like his countryman Joe Schmidt, the Wallabies coach, said the scoreline was an exaggeration of the perceived Australian dominance. 'It was a game of a bounce of a ball and a pass and a couple of little moments,' Robertson said. 'South Africa played beautifully for a period of time, and then it just turned, didn't it? And it just shows, like I have said before, with discipline and accuracy, you can force errors, and things can change quickly.' Back in the late 1990s, Robertson and Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus opposed each other as openside flanks in a Tri-Nations game. They have had a mutual respect ever since. Robertson feels that the loss at Ellis Park will direct Erasmus back to the Springbok DNA that has served them so well. 'Does it change the way we're going to play the Boks? Look, we know how they're going to play. They're going to play to their strengths. They'll go back to them. That is my opinion, anyway. It's just their DNA. But it's about how you stop them, while also playing your own game.' The All Blacks beat Argentina last week and face them again on Saturday before the countdown to Eden Park begins. 'It'll be a hell of a fiery Test,' the All Blacks coach smiled. 'How good is Test footy? Everyone's talking about it and there's some great footy being played.'

Themba Zwane sidelined: Sundowns and Bafana Bafana rocked by injury setback
Themba Zwane recieves medical attention on the pitch during Mamelodi Sundowns' MTN8 semi-final against Orlando Pirates. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Image: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has provided an update on Themba Zwane's injury, and it's not news the club's fans want to hear. Mshishi was stretchered off the field in last weekend's MTN8 semi-final first-leg clash against Orlando Pirates, leaving the club's fans worried that their talisman might be set for another lengthy period on the sidelines. The 36-year-old missed a large portion of last season after injuring his Achilles tendon in October while on national team duty with Bafana Bafana. Beyond his technical ability, Zwane's leadership on the pitch and experience in big matches have made him indispensable for both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. Next Stay Close ✕ He only returned to action towards the end of last season. He was looking to pick up where he left off and play a key role for both Sundowns and Bafana. But, according to Cardoso, Zwane will be out of action for a while. "Unfortunately, Themba will be out for, I believe, maybe around two months," said Sundowns' Cardoso after their match against Magesi FC on Wednesday. "But he will come back stronger, I believe for sure, and we are doing everything to ensure his recovery is as quick as possible,' he said. "Let's hope we get it as short as possible." The news of Zwane's injury will come as a blow to Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, who is expected to name his team for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria next month. Zwane's absence will leave a huge void for both Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, with the veteran playmaker's experience and creativity sorely missed. Fans and teammates alike will be hoping for a smooth recovery, while his return could prove pivotal in Sundowns' domestic campaign and South Africa's World Cup qualifying push. IOL Sport

Williams accuses Erasmus of ‘bullying' after barbed social media post
Matt Williams has accused Rassie Erasmus, pictured, of 'bullying' after the Springbok boss mocked his Scotland coaching record on social media. Photo: Ayanda Ndamane Independent Media Image: Ayanda Ndamane Independent Media Springbok critic Matt Williams has claimed that Rassie Erasmus' recent social media post highlighting his poor record as an international coach amounted to 'bullying.' Australian-born Williams, a former coach of New South Wales in Super Rugby and of the Scotland national team, has a long history of criticising Erasmus' Springboks. Still, Erasmus, something of a social media king, is known to give as good as he gets. Williams' main objection to the Boks centres on their 'misuse of substitutes with their Bomb Squad.' He has argued that the tactic is 'discriminatory against backs' and even 'contributed to the career-ending injury to Bok prop Steven Kitshoff.' A fortnight ago, Williams inflamed tensions further when he compared the quality of rugby on the recent British and Irish Lions tour to Australia with the Lions tour of South Africa four years ago. "If Ireland had have been playing this way under Schmidt, they very well would have made a RWC Final" Matt Williams reflects on what Joe Schmidt has brought to Australian Rugby since 2024. | #Wallabies Off The Ball Breakfast LIVE 7:30am w/ @UPMCInIreland | #GetBackInAction — Off The Ball (@offtheball) August 19, 2025 Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ 'The tour to South Africa was one of the worst ever,' Williams said on the Off the Ball podcast. 'The worst games of international rugby I've ever seen. "The way both management teams conducted themselves was disgraceful. Rassie was running on the field as a water carrier; there was a leaked video criticising referees … the style of rugby was an abomination. 'All they did was kick across the field and chase it. It was not played in a good spirit. It was aggressive, I have no problem with aggression, but it wasn't in the spirit of rugby. It tarnished the image of the game.' Williams, who has been a pundit for several Irish media platforms, added that the 'disgrace' of that Lions tour to South Africa had been rectified by the 'excellent' standard of rugby served up by the Lions and the Wallabies in Australia. Erasmus's response — posted on X — was uncompromising. He shared a screenshot of Williams' poor record as Scotland coach. The text read: 'Matt Williams had a 17.65% win percentage during his tenure coaching Scotland. "He coached the team in 17 matches, winning only three of them. Two of those wins were against Tier 2 nations, Japan and Samoa, according to Wikipedia.' Erasmus's caption was barbed: 'Heal, Sir Matt.' Williams replied: 'Hi Rassie, playing the man and not the ball again? Always the sign of a weak argument.' On Tuesday, following the Boks' shock 38-22 defeat to the Wallabies at Ellis Park, Williams spoke again on Off the Ball: 'Really, what Rassie was doing was just bullying me. Just trying to say: 'Well, your opinion doesn't count.' "It didn't address the issue. Surely the best coach in the world has got something better to do than listen to what I'm saying.'
