Backing for £577 payrise for Sandwell councillors
A proposal to increase the basic pay for councillors in Sandwell has been approved.The basic allowance for all 72 Sandwell councillors will rise by £577 to £12,129 the first time it has risen since 2022. A report by the independent remuneration panel (IRP) – the body tasked with setting councillor allowances – recommended the increase.Councillor Paul Moore, deputy leader and cabinet member for finance, said Sandwell's allowance was the lowest in the West Midlands and still £600 behind Solihull and £1,000 behind allowances paid to councillors in Walsall and Wolverhampton.
"I would stress that this report is independent and Sandwell's member allowance is less generous than those adopted by neighbouring authorities and in no way can be considered excessive," he said at the annual council meeting on 13 May.The move was approved by councillors with Conservative councillors Amrita Dunn and Les Trumpeter and Green councillor John Tipper voting against.
'Changing committee structure'
The IRP had recommended three years ago that councillor pay should increase but when it was put to a vote a few months later, councillors went against the proposals and instead agreed to "freeze" the majority of allowances.The panel had also again recommended that the council adopts yearly inflationary increases of up to 4%.In 2022, a pay award of £1,925 was offered to most local government staff across the UK, including those in councils and schools and while turning down the chance to increase pay, councillors also then voted to ignore the panel's recommendation and turn down set yearly inflationary rises.Sandwell Council is changing its committee structure which means the IRP, which also calculates how much councillors with "special responsibilities" such as the leader and deputy leader as well as chairs and vice chairs of committees should also be paid, will be meeting again to decide on changes to those amounts following the restructure.The leader of the Labour-run council councillor Kerrie Carmichael receives two-and-a-half times the basic allowance for the role – which was £28,584 in 2023/24.Cabinet members receive £17,150 extra each, the chair of the council's budget scrutiny committee and the chairs of the planning and licensing committees each receiv£11,433 extra while the chairs of other scrutiny committees net a further £9,519.

Fran Kirby has become the second England player to retire just weeks before Sarina Wiegman's side defend their European Championship title in Switzerland. Having represented England at four major tournaments, including starting every game of the Euros triumph in 2022, Kirby joins Mary Earps in bowing out of international football. 'After being in the England team since I was 21, it's time to close that chapter of my life,' wrote the 31-year-old Brighton midfielder. 'I didn't ever want this day to come, but I cannot tell you how proud I am it happened. 'It's been the biggest honour to represent my country, one that I had only dreamt about as a young girl. I've played with incredible players, worked with some incredible managers, played in some amazing tournaments and have some irreplaceable memories.' In an interview with the BBC about her retirement, Kirby explained that she had been mulling retirement for more than a year and knew that this summer's Euros would be her last major tournament for England. She added: 'The plan was to retire after the Euros but after speaking to Sarina I'm not going to make the squad. It was like a dagger to my heart but also a weight off my shoulders. It was emotional for both of us but we both respected what each person was saying.' Reacting to the news on Tuesday night, Wiegman said: 'First of all I love working with her. I think she has had an incredible career, which is still going on. She's an amazing player, she's an incredible person too. She did everything to make the squad. She has always been ready to play, ready to perform, helping others, whatever I asked her to do. 'Over time Fran and I have had several conversations. She has been unlucky with injuries too, she always fought back and still had some opportunities to play. I told her she was most likely not going to make the squad, we had these honest conversations. I think she's an inspiration to a lot of people and an example.' Kirby started every game in 2022, represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics after making her international debut in 2014, and finishes her career with 77 caps and 19 goals. She added: 'My mum had a dream of me representing my country, and I'm so proud I was able to do that and play in front of you all. I will never, ever forget the noise when my name is read out at a stadium. I was first selected when I was playing in WSL2, I played a part in the game-changing World Cup, winning bronze in 2015, creating some memories of a lifetime. 'Starting in every game and winning the Euros in 2022 was a dream come true, to be a part of change in women's football was one of the best experiences I could have ever imagined. Thank you.'

LOVE Island star Kyle Ashman was sensationally axed from the show last night over a machete attack. ITV chiefs scrapped the 23-year-old from the line up, plunging the show into chaos ahead of Monday's launch. 3 3 Eyebrows were raised after the cast member was removed from the show at the final hour. Unlike most of Love Island's line-ups, Kyle wasn't going into the villa with a social media packed with model shots. He has just one snap online, showing off his rippling six-pack as he poses on a rooftop. The mysterious 23-year-old water operative, from Stafford, previously described his flirting style as traditional and laid-back. He said: "I just go with it, find something to compliment a girl on and go from there." The chopped contestant said he was looking for "someone that's fun, confident and just themselves". Not much else is known about Kyle's private life. His flight back home from Majorca came after masked thugs stormed a wake in Stafford and hacked at a dad with a blade in February. Ashman, 23, was one of two quizzed but released with no further action. Sources said the channel was unaware of the incident and he was not flagged as part of contestant checks. The victim, 38, nearly lost his arm. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and kept in for around two weeks. Another mourner was glassed, one struck with a metal pole, and two people run over by a car during 15 minutes of terror at a social club in Stafford. Ashman, who lives in the town, was one of two men to be nicked on suspicion of affray and bailed. Police confirmed yesterday that after the matter had been investigated the pair were released with no further action only last month. A source said: 'This was a horrific attack which could have been even worse. 'Ashman may have signed up to one of the biggest shows on TV with this hanging over his head.' It is not suggested that Ashman, whose job involves laying and repairing water pipes, was involved in the attack. Last night he insisted he was not a violent person. Confirming his show exit, an ITV spokesman said: 'For personal reasons, Kyle will not be entering the Love Island Villa as planned.' The mass brawl broke out at The White Eagle Club on February 28. Sources said three balaclava-clad thugs armed with machetes and metal poles stormed the venue and attacked the dad over an alleged £3,000 debt. They attacked him with a blade and left him with a deep gash on his arm — with witnesses wrapping towels over it to stem the bleed. Pals say he has suffered tendon damage and is unable to drive due to his injuries. Witnesses said the mob made off in a white Vauxhall Astra waiting outside. Around 70 mourners, some elderly and some children, had gathered to pay their respects to local Stanley Reid. Our source continued: 'This seemed to be a targeted attack — they knew who they were looking for and where he was. "People wrapped a towel around the man's injury while waiting for emergency services. "Children were taken into a room and locked in there to keep them away from the violence. 'People were screaming and crying in fear. They had gathered to pay final farewells to a man who was really well-respected within the local community. 'They could have killed someone that night. They are nothing but scumbags. They ruined what was a lovely send-off for a good person.' Staffordshire Police said yesterday: 'We were called to a social club on Riverway, Stafford, at 7.40pm on Friday, February 28 following reports that someone had been glassed outside and a fight was taking place. Some of the men involved were wearing masks and were carrying weapons. 'Two men went to hospital after suffering injuries at the scene. Both have since been discharged. 'A man and a woman suffered minor injuries at the scene but did not want any medical treatment. 'Officers have reviewed CCTV footage and have been actively carrying out enquiries to find out more about what happened. 'A 22-year-old man, from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of wounding and affray. "Another man, also 22 and from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of affray. 'Both were questioned in custody and bailed with conditions while our enquiries continue.' A force spokeswoman later confirmed that both suspects had been released with no further action last month. Ashman said last night: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' A show source said: 'ITV were entirely unaware of Kyle's past and, as he was not charged, it was not flagged as part of Love Island's stringent DBS checks. 'It's only right he can now return home to the UK to share his side of the story and therefore bosses took the decision that it was best for him not to enter the villa.' Watch: Driver drags police officers down road
A mother dragged two police officers along the road when she drove off after giving them a false name. Lauren Baird, 43, was jailed after she put the lives of the constables in danger when she fled at speed in Aviemore, Scotland. Inverness Sheriff Court was told the officers challenged her about the inaccurate information she gave at 10.35pm on July 10, 2023. Baird accelerated away and the two victims were fortunate not to have gone under the car on the B9152 road between Kincraig and Rothiemurchus. Sheriff Sara Matheson was shown dashcam footage of one officer detaching himself after a few feet and the other only managing to free herself several yards along the road. She was left having to use crutches and has not returned to duty. A tearful Baird was jailed for 18 months and banned from driving for 43 months. Sheriff Matheson told Baird, who had admitted culpable and reckless conduct to the danger of life, attempting to pervert the course of justice by giving false details and attempting to conceal her vehicle and driving without a licence or insurance: 'This was appalling behaviour. 'It put two officers' lives in danger. It was pure luck their injuries weren't a lot worse. But it has had a significant psychological effect on them.' Defending, Natalie Paterson said that her client 'didn't appreciate the terrible consequences her actions had caused. She panicked when she was stopped by the police, which is a decision she regrets.' Fiscal depute Susan Love told the court that police had difficulty in obtaining Baird's true details in a half hour conversation during which she showed the officers a photograph she claimed was her, but clearly was not. The court heard that the one true thing she said was that she was staying at the nearby Coylumbridge Hotel, but when she was told she was being arrested, she drove off at speed. Ms Love added: 'It was fortunate that the officers did not go under the wheels of her car. ''They were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment to grazing, bruises, head swelling, an injured knee and a staved finger.'' When their police colleagues checked the hotel soon after the incident, they found her there. Her car had been concealed in a forest road close to the property.
