‘Shiksha Doot' among two killed by Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur

In a fresh wave of violence in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, two men, including a 'Shiksha Doot' (Shiksha Doot in Chhattisgarh refers to teachers working in remote and Maoist-affected areas), were found murdered in the forests of Pilur village on Tuesday.
One of the victims has been identified as Vinod Made, a local education worker who had reportedly been abducted by Maoists on Monday evening. His body, along with that of another unidentified individual, was discovered near the Farasgarh police station area, police sources said.
The police forces have moved to the village in search of Maoists.
Locals allege that the killings were carried out on suspicion of police informant activity, though official confirmation from authorities is still awaited.
According to eyewitness accounts and local media reports, Naxalites left behind pamphlets near the bodies accusing the victims of leaking information to security forces.
The incident has triggered renewed fear in the region, which has long been a hotbed of Maoist insurgency.
This latest attack follows a string of similar killings in Bijapur over the past fortnight, where six individuals, including two students, were executed by Maoists on suspicion of being informers.
The Bastar region, encompassing Bijapur and surrounding districts, has witnessed over 1,800 deaths attributed to Maoist violence since the formation of Chhattisgarh state in 2000.
Security forces have launched a search operation in the area, and the state government has reiterated its commitment to eliminating Naxalism by March 2026, a deadline set by Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this year.
Earlier on June 17, three villagers, including a 13-year-old schoolboy and a 20-year-old college student, were strangled to death by Naxalites in Peddakorma village of Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh. The victims were identified as Anil Madvi, a Class 7 student and Soma Modiyam, who had passed Class 12 and had joined college.
Since the formation of Chhattisgarh state in 2000, Naxalites have killed at least 1,821 people across Bastar's seven districts, with Bijapur recording the highest number of fatalities.
Victims have included civilians, surrendered cadres, and elected representatives.

Amid sanctions threats over Russian oil, Hardeep Puri clarifies: ‘EU buys in one afternoon what India buys in a quarter'

Union Oil Minister Hardeep Puri on Thursday slammed the European Union on threatning sanctions on countries, including India, for purchasing Russian oil amid its war with Ukraine. Speaking at the Urja Varta annual conference of the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), Puri addressed concerns over Donald Trump and NATO's warning of sanctions on countries buying oil from Russia. He claimed that the European Union, a group of states threatening the sanctions, is the largest buyer of Russia's LNG exports, followed by China and Japan. 'In terms of LNG or natural gas, the EU was the largest buyer, EU is purchasing 51 per cent of Russia's LNG exports, followed by China 21 per cent and Japan 18 per cent,' Puri said. 'In terms of pipeline gas, the EU was the largest buyer purchasing 37 per cent of Russia's pipeline gas, followed by China 30 per cent and Turkey 27 per cent,' he added. Recalling an old conversation with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar back in 2022, Hardeep Puri addressed a mixup that came across during that time. 'When my colleague, Mr. Jaishankar, when this whole process had started, when he was going for a discussion in the United States, he asked me over the phone casually, 'what happens if I am asked about Russian purchases?'' Puri said. The oil minister clarified that Jaishankar had probably misheard what he said. 'I said, 'friend, you tell them that they buy more in one afternoon — this is early days — than I buy in a quarter.' ' he said. 'I think the telephone line must not have been absolutely clear. So he ended up saying, 'I believe you buy more in one afternoon than I buy in a month.' Though, I meant in a quarter,' Puri added. Jaishankar had in 2022 inaccurately claimed that India buys in a month the amount of oil Europe buys in an afternoon. 'If you are looking at energy purchases from Russia, I would suggest that your attention should be focused on Europe…We do buy some energy which is necessary for our energy security. But I suspect, looking at the figures, probably our total purchases for the month would be less than what Europe does in an afternoon,' he had said.

Five Maoists, including minor, arrested in Chhattisgarh's Sukma

Raipur: In a major success for anti-Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh, security forces arrested five Maoists, including a minor, in a joint action near the Chintalnar police station area of Sukma district. The operation, carried out by personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Bastar Fighters, and local police, led to the recovery of a significant cache of explosives. Among the seized items were 20 gelatin sticks, eight detonators, 10 non-electric detonators, and approximately three meters of cordex wire. According to Sukma SP Kiran Chavan, the arrested individuals were active militia members from the Jagargunda-Pamed area committee and had been involved in a firing incident targeting a police patrol party on November 24, 2024. All five had serious criminal cases registered against them at the Chintalnar police station. Following their arrest on July 16, four were sent to judicial custody while the minor was placed in a juvenile home. This development comes amid an intensified crackdown on Maoist insurgency across Bastar, following Union Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement to eradicate Naxalism from India by March 2026. Maoist organisations themselves have acknowledged the loss of 357 cadres in the past year, including 136 women fighters, in a booklet listing names of those killed in encounters. The government's dual approach -- combining aggressive security operations with rehabilitation efforts -- has led to over 1,400 Maoist surrenders since December 2023. Many former cadres have cited ideological disillusionment and internal discrimination as reasons for laying down arms. Just last week, 23 Maoists with a combined bounty of Rs 1.18 crore surrendered in Sukma, including senior members of the PLGA battalion. Officials said the latest arrests highlight the growing effectiveness of coordinated intelligence and field-level action. With sustained pressure and expanding development initiatives in remote tribal regions, authorities aim to further dismantle the insurgency and reintegrate former combatants into civil society.
