Dave Portnoy lashes out at Stephen A Smith with savage dig over controversial Caitlin Clark brawl take

Daily Mail4 hours ago

Barstool Sports chief Dave Portnoy took a brutal shot at Stephen A. Smith over the sports media personality's controversial take on Caitlin Clark.
Clark and the WNBA were once again thrust into the spotlight Tuesday night when the Indiana Fever superstar found herself at the center of a number of on-court skirmishes.
In a tense clash against the Sun, Clark was jabbed in the eye by Connecticut's Jacy Sheldon, who had previously been caught in a heated exchange with the Fever guard, before being slammed to the floor by Marina Mabrey in a violent moment which sparked outrage online.
However, Smith suggested Clark wasn't entirely innocent in the shocking on-court outburst, which is just the latest in a number directed at the Iowa product.
'Clearly, when it comes to Caitlin Clark, there's some resentment, as I've articulated before. What people are missing, Monica, is that I have no problem with it whatsoever,' Smith told Monica McNutt during Wednesday's episode of 'First Take'.
'Yes, there's resentment... this is much ado about nothing! In the heat of competition, tempers flare! Last time I checked, women got tempers just like men do. It ain't a problem! It ain't a problem at all! It ain't no big deal at all! I love it, personally.'
I'll take things that never happened but ESPN always pretends did for 100 Alex. Less solitaire. More facts @1stephenasmith. https://t.co/hQx8lcurgZ — Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) June 18, 2025
Dave Portnoy (R) called out Stephen A. Smith (L) for his take on the Caitlin Clark brawl
The Indiana Fever star was poked in the eye before being shoved to the ground by her rivals
'Caitlin Clark being that golden goose, that rising tide that's lifting all boats, I stand by my past proclamations that there's resentment towards her because of that. But I want to take it a step further: There's also resentment towards her because she instigates resentment towards her sometimes.'
But a furious Portnoy, who had expressed his outrage at Mabry Tuesday night, took issue with Smith's version of events as he used a 'Jeopardy!' reference to shut down the ESPN analyst.
'I'll take things that never happened but ESPN always pretends did for 100 Alex. Less solitaire. More facts @1stephenasmith,' Portnoy wrote on X in response to a clip of Smith's take.
The American businessman further rubbed salt in the wound by taking a dig at Smith's courtside game of solitaire.
Smith, who earlier this year signed a $100million ESPN contract, was caught playing the card game on his phone during the NBA Finals, where he was working for the network last week.
Clark had been prodded in the eye by Sheldon during the second quarter of the Fever's 88-71 win. When the Indiana superstar reacted angrily to being struck by Sheldon, the latter's teammate, Mabrey, raced over and slammed her to the floor in a violent moment which sparked outrage online.
Somehow she avoided an ejection from the game despite the shove being unprovoked, much to the dismay of WNBA fans - including Portnoy.
The Barstool founder called for 'jealous loser' Mabrey to be kicked out of the league over her attack on Clark.

Portnoy has called for Connecticut Sun star Mabrey to be banned from the WNBA
'Marina Mabrey is a jealous loser punk,' Portnoy wrote on X Tuesday night. 'Asks to be traded on every single team she's on until she's on worst team in the league and completely irrelevant unless she's cheap shorting Caitlin. Go play in rec league where nobody gives a s*** about you.'
'Imagine not kicking Marina Mabrey out after she assaults the face of the league? Just a common tech? Sick league @WNBA Also shouldn't have been a tech on Caitlin since that girl got in her face after gouging her eyes.'
The Barstool founder's outrage didn't end there, as he later posted a long rant, further coming to Clark's aid.
Portnoy called out the league's commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, WNBA referees, and some of the franchise owners for letting the league get to a place where players putting their hands on Clark as much as they have has become the norm.
Partway through his lengthy rant, Portnoy once again turned his focus to the Sun player, adding: 'Then bang, Marina Mabrey... who if you don't know who that is, she's been on 32 different teams in two years, she cries, whines, leaves one team, goes to another, demands a trade... she's an irrelevant journeyman. She runs up to Caitlin after the whistle and f***ing slams into her and knocks her down. An obvious ejection!
'Marina Mabrey look in the mirror. The reason that you have any money before the end of your career is number two two. Nobody even cared who you were until she got into the league. So cheap shot her like that, what are you? Dumb?
'More importantly, the league, the refs, you're going to let people take cheap shots like that over and over and over at the face of your league? The future of your league? The most important player in your league? How do you not eject her?'
The WNBA came out Wednesday and admitted that Mabrey should have faced harsher punishment for her part in the on-court skirmish.
Mabrey's technical has been upgraded to a flagrant 2, which would have brought about an ejection had it been dished out on the night.

Jordan Spieth reveals very relatable way he recovered from brutal US Open

Oakmont Country Club was the stuff of nightmares last week, leaving several of golf's biggest star's shell-shocked by the end of a particularly brutal US Open. And Jordan Spieth was no exception. Like many, the three-time major winner was seemingly left scarred by the savage conditions in Pennsylvania over the weekend. Following a frustrating US Open, the 31-year-old father-of-two sought comfort in an unlikely place. Endearing himself further to the amateur golfer, Spieth admitted that he recovered from the traumatic major by drowning his sorrows in beer and wings. 'I had a few beers. I was waiting on [Scottie] Scheffler to get done, but he was after the [rain] delay, so I went to Buffalo Wild Wings,' the world No 44 said Wednesday ahead of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. 'I didn't exactly eat or drink the way I normally do there… Sometimes post-US Open, I just need to throw a few back. How did @JordanSpieth unwind after Oakmont? He crushed beers and wings... — Jamie Kennedy (@jamierkennedy) June 18, 2025 The world No 44 revealed he drowned his sorrows in beer and Buffalo wings on Sunday 'By yesterday, I was good. I'm still young enough where that doesn't really bother me the next day.' Oakmont Country Club isn't for the faint of heart and after grinding it out across the challenging US Open setup, Spieth can be forgiven for his chosen method of destressing. Spieth finished tied for 23rd at this year's US Open, marking his eighth top-25 finish in 15 starts this season. He set up a chance at a run at his second US Open victory with an opening even-par round but watched his hopes slip away over the following three rounds. Failing to stay under-par - or even - for the remainder of the tournament, he finished at eight-over for the championship. 'I feel like, off of last week, it was a pretty tough walk -- this is my 10th out of 12 weeks as well, so my legs were a little clumsy the last two days,' Spieth said. 'I woke up this morning and feel ready and fresh, and that's kind of what you're looking for. If you can get there by Wednesday morning or sooner after hitting a couple training sessions and kind of getting everything on the recovery side going, then we're good to go.' Spieth will tee it up at TPC River Highlands, where he previously won in an electric playoff over Daniel Berger in 2017, in the hope of bouncing back from Oakland's brutality this week. He will head out alongside Luke Clanton at 1:55pm ET Thursday. Clanton only turned professional earlier this month after the NCAA golf championship. After rising to world No 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking last August, the 21-year-old made his PGA Tour debut at the RBC Canadian Open.

NBA star Zach Edey charged with reckless driving after cops allegedly caught him at 101mph

NBA player Zach Edey has been charged with reckless driving after cops allegedly caught him speeding at 101mph. The Memphis Grizzlies center was caught by police while driving through a 55mph zone on May 1. Fox 59 reported that an Indiana State Trooper pulled Edey, 23, over at 7:03pm and issued him a citation. Edey, driving a Kia Sorento, reportedly told the officers that he was only travelling at that speed because he was trying to pass another vehicle. The former Purdue standout is said to be due in Tippecanoe Superior 6 court on Monday to face a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. The incident occurred in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. That is where Purdue is based and Edey spent four seasons. Purdue's men's basketball team posted a photo of Edey in Mackey on May 6 where he could be seen alongside other players and alumni. Earlier this month it emerged Edey could miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA season after he underwent surgery on his left ankle. Edey needed the procedure to repair and restabilize his ankle after spraining it again during offseason training. The Grizzlies said the 7-foot-3 Canadian would be evaluated again in four months, which is less than two weeks before the 2025-26 season opens October 21. The two-time national player of the year at Purdue missed 12 games early in the season because of a sprained left ankle. He went on to play in 66 games, making 55 starts, and averaged 9.2 points and a rookie-leading 8.3 rebounds. He was voted to the All-Rookie first team.

NFL sideline reporter Laura Okmin announces shock exit from Fox

NFL sideline reporter Laura Okmin has announced she is leaving Fox. Okmin has become one of the most recognizable faces on the sidelines of NFL games after two decades with the network. She told Front Office Sports on Wednesday that she wasn't forced out by Fox, but rather rejected their offer of a new contract. Okmin said: 'They sent me the contract. I printed it out. I sat there. It was just my voice saying, "It's time, this is it". 'I'm happy to say [my boss] was very surprised. I would have been very disappointed if there was any other reaction.' Okmin spent last season working in a team alongside play-by-play commentator Kevin Kugler and analyst Daryl Johnston. She joined Fox in 2002 and, over her 23 years in the NFL, became the third-longest tenured sideline reporter in league history. Away from her NFL duties Okmin launched GALvanize, a mentorship space for women in sports media. After working on the sidelines for such a long time, she now wants to switch her focus to her new passion of guiding the next generation of female reporters. 'Honestly, it's a tough job having to justify your job for 20 years. Having to fight for your job and having to justify it,' she added. 'It feels like there's a bit of dog years with that job.'
