N. Korea's Mount Kumgang likely to win UNESCO World Heritage status after 4-year bid
Mount Kumgang has long been regarded as one of Korea's most scenic mountains for its breathtaking beauty that changes with the seasons.
The International Council on Monuments and Sites and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which serve as advisory bodies to the World Heritage Committee, have recommended the inclusion of Mount Kumgang on the UNESCO World Heritage list, according to UNESCO.
The official name submitted by North Korea is Mt. Kumgang - Diamond Mountain from the Sea.
On UNESCO's website, the mountain is described as "a strikingly beautiful mountain with numerous peaks and curious rocks amounting to some 12,000, waterfalls and pools formed by crystal-like clear waters flowing from hundreds of gorges, as well as with the seascape stretched along the coastline."
"Mt. Kumgang is permeated with numerous legends and cultural relics handed down through generations," it added.
North Korea submitted its application for World Heritage inscription in 2021, but the site's review was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The evaluation resumed this year.
North Korea is said to have initially applied for the site to be recognized as both a cultural and natural heritage site, but the advisory bodies recommended it be listed as a cultural landscape.
If inscribed, it will become North Korea's third World Cultural Heritage site, following the Complex of Koguryo Tombs inscribed in 2004 and the Historic Monuments and Sites in Kaesong in 2013.
In 2014, North Korea also had "Arirang, lyrical folk song in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea" inscribed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. (Yonhap)

Korea urges measles vaccination before overseas travel as imported cases rise
Amid a sharp rise in imported cases of measles recently, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has urged travelers to ensure they are fully vaccinated against the infectious disease before going abroad. According to KDCA data released Wednesday, 68 cases of measles had been confirmed in Korea as of Aug. 9, since the government began to closely observe outbreak cases in December 2024. The number of cases observed most recently was a 1.4-fold increase from the number of cases recorded over the same period a year prior. Of the total number of cases, 49 — 72.1 percent — were infections contracted overseas and detected after entry. A majority of the cases, adding up to 42 in total, were found to be contracted from Vietnam, followed by South Africa, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Italy and Mongolia. The nineteen other domestic cases were also linked to these imported infections, with transmission occurring in households and medical facilities with measles patients. Adults made up a majority of the cases, with 77.9 percent of patients aged 19 or older. Notably, 54.4 percent were either unvaccinated against measles or were unsure of their vaccination status. Citing data from the World Health Organization, the KDCA said some 360,000 measles cases were reported globally in 2024, with outbreaks still continuing to be observed into this year in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia — regions all frequented by Korean travelers. According to the agency, lower vaccination rates for measles worldwide have fueled the resurgence. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, measles vaccinations were disrupted due to a strain in the health care system as well as lockdowns that made it difficult for some families to access vaccination services. In 2023, the global rate of the second-dose measles vaccination — which is crucial for full immunity — was 74 percent, below the WHO-recommended 95 percent. To stay safe from measles infections, the KDCA has advised travelers to measles-affected countries to complete the two-dose measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. Those developing a fever or a rash within three weeks of returning to South Korea from a measles-affected country should wear a mask, minimize contact with others and inform medical authorities of recent travel before seeking care. Extra caution is urged for households with infants too young for vaccination, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.

Korean Air to debut premium economy next month
Korean Air, the country's flag carrier, announced Tuesday the introduction of a new cabin tier -- Premium Class -- positioned between business and economy class, as part of a fleet-wide cabin interior upgrade to modernize its aircraft and improve the passenger experience. The new 40-seat cabin will debut across 11 retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, with operations on medium-haul routes set to begin in mid-September. The project is a 300 billion won ($216 million) company-wide initiative that began in 2018 but was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the flag carrier. It is aimed not only at introducing a new cabin class but also at updating interiors across all travel classes. 'We will do our utmost to ensure that as many travelers as possible can experience the enhanced comfort of the newly reimagined Boeing 777-300ER and our new Premium Class product,' a Korean Air official said. 'We also plan to continue offering tailored services to meet the evolving needs of our passengers.' Each Premium Class cabin includes 40 seats arranged in a 2-4-2 seat configuration, offering seats around 1.5 times wider than those in economy. Fares are around 110 percent higher than those of standard economy. The class also features upgraded headrests and side-mounted privacy shields designed to provide a more comfortable and private in-flight experience. Korean Air stated that Premium Class passengers will enjoy many of the same benefits offered in the 777-300ER's business-tier cabin, Prestige Class, including enhanced in-flight entertainment with high-resolution screens, elevated meal and beverage service and access to premium ground services. Alongside the launch of Premium Class, the full-scale interior renovation introduces a new 1-2-1 configuration in Prestige Class, while economy class has been outfitted with a 3-4-3 layout. In-flight Wi-Fi will be available across all cabin classes.

US to require up to $15,000 bonds for some tourists
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The US could require bonds of up to $15,000 for some tourist and business visas under a pilot program launching in two weeks, a government notice said on Monday, an effort that aims to crack down on visitors who overstay their visas. The program gives US consular officers the discretion to impose bonds on visitors from countries with high rates of visa overstays, according to a Federal Register notice. Bonds could also be applied to people coming from countries where screening and vetting information is deemed insufficient, the notice said. President Donald Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a focus of his presidency, boosting resources to secure the border and arresting people in the US illegally. He issued a travel ban in June that fully or partially blocks citizens of 19 nations from entering the US on national security grounds. Trump's immigration policies have led some visitors to skip travel to the United States. Transatlantic airfares dropped to rates last seen before the COVID-19 pandemic in May and travel from Canada and Mexico to the US fell by 20 percent year-over-year. Effective Aug. 20, the new visa program will last for approximately a year, the government notice said. Consular officers will have three options for visa applicants subjected to the bonds: $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000, but will generally be expected to require at least $10,000, it said. The funds will be returned to travelers if they depart in accordance with the terms of their visas, the notice said. A similar pilot program was launched in November 2020 during the last months of Trump's first term in office, but it was not fully implemented due to the drop in global travel associated with the pandemic, the notice said. A State Department spokesperson listed the criteria that will be used to identify the countries that will be affected, adding that the country list may be updated. "Countries will be identified based on high overstay rates, screening and vetting deficiencies, concerns regarding acquisition of citizenship by investment without a residency requirement, and foreign policy considerations," the spokesperson said. The State Department was unable to estimate the number of visa applicants who could be affected by the change. Many of the countries targeted by Trump's travel ban also have high rates of visa overstays, including Chad, Eritrea, Haiti, Myanmar and Yemen. US Travel Association, which represents major tourism-related companies, estimated the "scope of the visa bond pilot program appears to be limited, with an estimated 2,000 applicants affected, most likely from only a few countries with relatively low travel volume to the United States." Numerous countries in Africa, including Burundi, Djibouti and Togo also had high overstay rates, according to US Customs and Border Protection data from fiscal year 2023. A provision in a sweeping spending package passed in the Republican-controlled US Congress in July also created a $250 "visa integrity fee" for anyone approved for a non-immigrant visa that could potentially be reimbursable for those who comply with visa rules. The $250 fee goes into effect on Oct. 1. US Travel said that fee could hinder travel and said "if implemented, the US will have one of, if not the highest, visitor visa fees in the world." "They are both causing disease, death and disability today in tens of thousands of people, and these harms will become more severe in the years ahead as the planet continues to warm and plastic production continues to increase," he said.
