State govt employees, pensioners to get benefits of AB-PMJAY

Gujarat government on Wednesday decided to cover all its employees and pensioners under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), a scheme, which provides medical insurance of Rs 10 lakh for the entire family of a card-holder.
The decision in this regard was taken by the state cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, in a meeting Wednesday. The employees and pensioners will be able to draw benefits of the AB-PMJAY, under a new scheme floated by the state government — Gujarat Karmayogi Swasthya Suraksha Yojana — stated an official release. It will cover 4.2 lakh employees and 2.2 lakh pensioners of the state government, and cause a financial burdern of Rs 303 crore on the state government, it added.
A government release stated that employees and pensioners, who cannot draw the benefits of AB-PMJAY scheme, will be eligible for medical facilities they were already getting. Also, they will continue to get a monthly medical allowance of Rs 1,000.
The scheme will not be applicable to fix-pay employees of the state government as they get benefits under Karmayogi Card, and pensioners above the age of 70 since they are covered under the Vay Vandana scheme.

Coimbatore: A special court for the trial of cases registered under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on Tuesday sentenced a 42-year-old man to 16 years of rigorous imprisonment and double life imprisonment for raping a 62-year-old SC woman in 2022. The court ordered the man to serve the 16 years of imprisonment first and then serve the life imprisonment. M Velusamy, 42, a daily wage labourer from a village near Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district who belongs to a non-dalit community, was arrested for raping a 62-year-old dalit woman in the village on June 26, 2022. The woman's husband died seven years ago. She went out in search of fodder for her goats when Velusamy forcibly took her to under a bridge and raped her. She lost two teeth while attempting to resist the sexual assault and sustained minor injuries. The woman managed to walk to a nearby bus stop, where she fainted. Later, she was admitted to a primary health centre (PHC) and was given immediate medical attention. She was shifted to district headquarters hospital in Pollachi. Former Perur all-women police inspector S Amutha recorded the statements of the rape survivor. The case trial was held at the special court. On Tuesday, the court found Velusamy guilty. The court awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, another seven years under the SC/ST Act and two years for criminal intimidation. The court also awarded double life imprisonment to Velusamy for raping the elderly woman. He was ordered to undergo the two life terms concurrently, after serving the 16 years of rigorous imprisonment for other offences consecutively. The court imposed a fine of Rs 32,000 on him.

The Goa government, in a new strategy against vector-borne diseases dengue and malaria, is planning to use drones to identify mosquito-breeding sites and take measures to control them. Two high-risk sites—one urban and one rural—will be identified in North Goa and South Goa for the research study, which is planned to be scaled up to cover the state, depending on the outcomes.'This will help us reach overhead tanks of buildings and roof gutters where there is water leakage and stagnation (leading to breeding of mosquitoes). Customs officers on Monday arrested a foreign national at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai for allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine worth nearly Rs 52 crore into India. The accused's plan surprised Customs officers who found that he had concealed the contraband in an ortho waist belt and calf supporters. The accused was subsequently arrested for allegedly smuggling commercial quantity drugs, under the stringent Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances NDPS Act. According to the Customs department, its officers from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) had received specific intelligence. Following this, the officers on Monday intercepted the suspect at the airport. During search, AIU officers recovered four packets containing white powder, which the passenger had concealed in an ortho waist belt and calf supporters worn by him. Upon testing the recovered substance using a narcotics field testing kit, the samples tested positive for cocaine, a Customs officer said. Around 5,194 grams of cocaine valued at Rs 51.94 crore were seized. The passenger was subsequently arrested under provisions of the NDPS Act. Investigators are trying to obtain details about the foreign-based handlers and associates and also local contact who were supposed to collect the contraband from the accusded. Customs officers are also checking the foreigner's travel history to check if he had smuggled narcotics or any other banned or restricted items to India in the past. And also what amount the passenger was offered in lieu for acting as a carrier, sources said. The passenger if found guilty can face a prison sentence of 20 years as seizure of cocaine beyond 100 grams falls in the category of commercial quantity that attracts harsh punishment under the provisions of NDPS Act.
