On Thursday, May 8, when Cardinal Robert Prevost stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and introduced himself as
Pope Leo XIV
, the world witnessed a historic first—the election of a U.S.-born pope. But it didn't take long for fans of a different kind of devotion to take notice. As word of the Chicago-native pope spread, so did chatter about another Windy City legend:
Michael Jordan

Pope Leo XIV
is not only the first American to lead the
Catholic Church
but also a proud Chicago native. Greeting the crowd at St. Peter's Basilica that evening, the 69-year-old offered blessings of peace, while back home,
Chicago sports
fans began connecting the newest pope to the city's most iconic athlete.
Former NFL quarterback
Robert Griffin III
added fuel to the fun with a viral post on X: 'The new Pope is from Chicago. He definitely believes Michael Jordan is the GOAT.' The post resonated widely, injecting the age-old Michael Jordan vs.

debate with a holy twist.

The pope spent much of the 1980s living and working in Chicago, just as
Michael Jordan
began his meteoric rise with the
Chicago Bulls
. Although Pope Leo XIV relocated to Peru during the 1990s, as Jordan led the team through two historic three-peats, he remained closely tied to the city that raised both a basketball legend and a pope.
The Windy City connection took an amusing turn the next day when a post went viral claiming that a
stained-glass window
had been added to St. Peter's Basilica—one depicting Michael Jordan mid-dunk. Though entirely fake, the image spread like wildfire, with many fans simply amused by the idea, given the Pope's strong Chicago roots.
Naturally, there is no such window. Vatican decor remains devoted to sacred tradition, not slam dunks. Still, the hoax captured the joy and whimsy sparked by the election of a pope with such a familiar and relatable origin story.

Pope Leo XIV's ascent marks a new chapter for the Catholic Church, but for Chicago natives and basketball fans, it's also a nostalgic nod to the golden era of the Bulls. Whether or not he ever shares his thoughts on the Bulls, Michael Jordan, or the infamous MJ vs. LeBron debate, the new pope has already left a cultural imprint, one that bridges faith and fandom. In the city that gave the world both Michael Jordan and now a pope, greatness clearly takes many forms.

French Open 2025: Coco Gauff Scripts History, Becomes Youngest American To...

In an engrossing championship clash between the top two players, No. 2 seed Coco Gauff pulled off a three-set comeback against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to win her first French singles title and second Grand Slam singles title on Saturday. After narrowly losing a mesmerizing, back-and-forth first set, Gauff rebounded spectacularly to register 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 win over Sabalenka after 2 hours and 38 minutes. Three years after her runner-up showing at 2022 Roland Garros, Gauff now adds the French Open crown to her 2023 US Open title. "I honestly didn't think I could do it," said Gauff said during the trophy presentation. Notably, Gauff is the first American in a decade to triumph in Paris, since Serena Williams won her third French Open title in 2015. At 21 years old, Gauff also became the youngest American to win the Roland Garros title since Serena Williams' first French Open title in 2002. Meanwhile Sabalenka nearly became the only active woman to have won singles titles at three of the four Grand Slam events, but she was outfoxed by Gauff. Gauff had seven fewer winners than Sabalenka in the final -- but 40 fewer unforced errors. "This hurts so much. Congratulations to Coco - she was a better player than me," said Sabalenka. After picking up 2,000 points for winning her second Slam title, Gauff will rise from No. 5 to No. 2 in the Race to the WTA Finals Riyadh. She will also maintain her career-high World No. 2 spot in the PIF WTA Rankings. On the other hand, Sabalenka falls to 3-3 in Grand Slam finals, but she will still remain No. 1 in both the WTA Rankings and the Race to the WTA Finals Riyadh by large margins.

Who is Coco Gauff, the 21-year-old American tennis star, who has defeated the world No. 1

Credit: X/@rolandgarros Coco Gauff pulled off a sensational comeback to defeat world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the French Open final on Saturday, securing her second Grand Slam singles title. With this win, the 21-year-old American tennis star has once again proven she's not just a rising talent — she's a force to be reckoned with. But beyond the court, Gauff's life is a mix of ambition, balance, and growing influence. — Phil_Lewis_ (@Phil_Lewis_) The making of a star Gauff burst into the global spotlight in 2019 at just 15 years old when she defeated her idol Venus Williams in the first round at Wimbledon. That victory sparked a meteoric rise. Her first Grand Slam win came at the 2023 U.S. Open, and her second — the French Open triumph this weekend — solidifies her place among the sport's elite. Raised in Delray Beach, Florida, Coco comes from an athletic family: her father played college basketball, and her mother was a track and field star. That discipline shaped her into a focused competitor with a maturity well beyond her years. Brains and Balance Even while building a professional tennis career, Gauff has kept education in focus. She completed high school in 2022 through online classes and has continued her learning journey through college-level courses remotely. Her parents have emphasized that education remains a cornerstone, and Coco has echoed that belief in interviews, often saying she wants to be more than just a tennis player. Forbes lists the upper figure, while most financial outlets place it closer to $10–$12 million. Her earnings are driven largely by more than $15 million in career prize money, including payouts from the 2023 U.S. Open and 2025 French Open wins, as well as a portfolio of lucrative endorsements. Gauff's brand partnerships are a who's who of global names: New Balance (where she has her own apparel line and an upcoming signature shoe), Barilla, Rolex, Head, Bose, and UPS. Her collaboration with New Balance is especially significant, positioning her not just as an athlete but as a marketable icon in fashion and lifestyle. Source: X/@_MissLeandra Love life and lifestyle While Gauff keeps her private life largely out of the spotlight, in a 2024 interview with the People she confirmed being in a relationship with someone who comes from a non-tennis background. Despite her rising fame, Gauff remains grounded. She travels with her family when possible, enjoys watching anime, and is known to unplug from social media when the pressure of competition builds. At 21, Coco Gauff has already accomplished more than most athletes twice her age. With two Grand Slam titles under her belt and a steady climb in the WTA rankings, she's poised for a dominant run. But it's not just her skill that sets her apart — it's her poise, her perspective, and her ability to inspire.

Bengaluru stampede: How further disaster was thwarted on top tiers of Chinnaswamy Stadium

1 2 Bengaluru: While pain, anguish and trauma unfolded outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium Wednesday, a potential disaster was averted by the skin of the teeth inside the stadium — thanks to the swift response of alert private security personnel and police officers. By 5pm on that fateful day, as it became clear certain stands, particularly Stand 13, were overcrowded, D Bhaskar, the managing director of Supreme Care Services, a private security agency deployed by event partner DNA, could sense trouble. "Stand 13 looked dangerous. People were jumping from the upper tier to the lower level to get a better view," Bhaskar recalled. "Some even used pillars and fences to climb down. It was a crowd unlike what we usually see during IPL matches — much more aggressive and unruly." Bhaskar, drawing on his army training and two years' experience of handling RCB match security, read the situation fast enough to realise it was spiralling out of control. "Several stands were operating at over 120% capacity. Those spectators who stood up were blocking the views of those behind, which led to pushing and jostling," he said. "I feared people could fall off the upper stands straight to the ground." Bhaskar immediately approached a senior police officer at the venue. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Obtén audífonos premium sin pagar absolutamente nada Top Audifonos Undo "I must thank him — he acted without any delay. Five police officers from the VIP area were immediately told to control the situation on the upper stands. They moved to the upper tiers and cleared out those threatening to act dangerously," Bhaskar said. Warnings on loudspeaker Meanwhile, Bhaskar's team comprising former army personnel, used walkie-talkies and loudspeakers to warn the spectators. "We told the crowd that they were under surveillance and strict action would be taken against any unruly conduct, which instilled some fear and helped calm the situation."
