3 care workers charged with fraud of vulnerable woman
Three care workers are facing fraud charges after allegedly removing "large sums of money" from the bank account of a vulnerable woman they were assigned to care for.
Amherst police say the victim, who has ALS — a neurodegenerative condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord — is unable to move and needs several hours of care each day.
Cpl. Tom Wood of Amherst Police says the three care workers had access to the woman's bank account as part of their duties.
The 13-month investigation found that the workers allegedly removed the money to cover the hours they had worked, but there were discrepancies between those reported hours and the actual hours they worked.
The victim contacted police in November 2023 to report that a large amount of money was missing from her account. Wood said the amount totalled about $40,000.
Wood would not disclose the name of the agency the women worked for.
Each of the three workers has been charged with fraud over $5,000. They are slated to appear in court next month.

"Detectives continue to investigate this matter, and physical searches will continue as needed as information is provided." Police say investigators "have conducted several enquiries during their investigations, including multiple searches of Good Night Scrub National Park, forensic examinations of a Gin Gin property and vehicle." Wood was initially released on Thursday, June 5, with no charges filed, according to ABC News and Bishop was last seen leaving a property in Gin Gin, where she lived with two housemates, in a grey Hyundai, according to Wood spoke with The Daily Mail this week and said Bishop was experiencing 'heightened emotions' prior to her trip to visit her boyfriend, adding that she 'smashed' a TV prior to her disappearance. 'She does have a temper but she is not a bad kid, she is actually a great kid,' Wood told the outlet. "She is kind and smart and has good manners but she was living with us because she couldn't live at home anymore.' Wood told the outlet he and Bromley drove Bishop to the airport but then ended up stopping the car on Airport Drive, just over half a mile from the terminal in order to "give her five minutes - give her her own space to do what she needed to do" to get ready for the flight. The 34-year-old man told The Daily Mail that Bishop was allegedly gone by the time he and Bromley returned to the car and they assumed she had gotten on her flight. "It was maybe five minutes, maybe it was three minutes or maybe it was eight but that's about how long we were gone," Wood claimed in the interview. Police said the missing teen was spotted 'carrying luggage' that morning on Airport Drive, but 'did not check in for a flight and has not been seen or heard from since.' In a previous update, police revealed that some items had been 'located during the search and have been seized for forensic examination' that they believed were 'linked to the investigation.'Meanwhile, Bishop's mother, Kylie Johnson, has posted multiple updates on Facebook amid her daughter's disappearance. She also read an official family statement in a video recently released by police, PEOPLE previously reported. 'Hi, I'm Kylie. I'm Pheobe's mom. Our lives have been changed for the worse after the sudden disappearance of my daughter, who was last seen on May 15,' Johnson said in the video, which was posted on a crime watch Facebook group for the Queensland area on Saturday, May 31. Sebastian man struck, killed by Brightline train; police investigation underway
SEBASTIAN − Police are investigating the death of a Sebastian man who they said was struck by a Brightline passenger train late June 4. The 69-year-old man was struck by a northbound Brightline train while he was on train tracks about a quarter mile north of the Main Street crossing at roughly 11:30 p.m., said Deputy Chief Timothy Wood with Sebastian Police Department. Database: Brightline train incidents on the Treasure Coast Wood said he was a local resident, however, police were not releasing his identity as of June 5. The man was the only person hit and was said to be on foot at the time. Whether the man was struck while crossing, or intentionally on the tracks, remains under investigation, along with if there was any evidence of possible intoxication, Wood said. Man arrested on suspicion of murder after 16-year-old hit by car on pavement
A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a teenager who was an 'entirely innocent bystander' was hit by a car which appeared to mount the pavement, police have said. Graphic CCTV footage of the incident in the Darnall area of Sheffield appears to show the car veer into the opposite carriageway before hitting the 16-year-old at speed. South Yorkshire Police said on Thursday that a man had been arrested in Kent on suspicion of murder. Three people – a 45-year-old woman and two men aged 26 and 46 – have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, the force said. All four remain in custody. Detectives said they believe a grey Audi drove towards three electric bikes, colliding with one rider, who suffered serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening. The Audi then collided with the teenager and failed to stop at the scene, officers said. Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood said: 'This is a tragic incident in which an entirely innocent bystander, who was going about his daily business, has sadly lost his life. 'Our thoughts are with the boy's loved ones and we remain focused on securing justice for them.' Mr Wood said: 'We know that this incident will have caused concern in the local community, and we have a team of detectives working at pace to piece together the circumstances which unfolded. 'We're aware of footage being shared online and I'd like to reiterate our message to the public to withhold from speculating or circulating videos which may cause distress to the boy's family. Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood said: 'This is a tragic incident in which an entirely innocent bystander, who was going about his daily business, has sadly lost his life. 'If you have any footage, imagery or information that may help our investigation then please share this directly with us, it may form an important part of our inquiries. 'We are also keen to hear from the riders of two electric bikes who were in the area at the time of the incident.' Officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Staniforth Road shortly after 4.50pm on Wednesday. Mojid Khan said the boy came to rest at the gates of his Staniforth Road wholesale catering business, and his staff were the first on the scene after hearing the collision. He said he arrived half an hour later and was shocked to see what his CCTV system had recorded. Mr Khan said on Thursday: 'When it happens on your doorstep, literally, it does affect you. It's quite horrific to see how it happens.' He said: 'I think it's a local lad that's passed away and another local lad that got injured on a motorbike. It's shocking for us as a community. 'The disturbing thing is that this is not the first time that this has happened. It seems every few months something like this is going on. 'I think that's a matter for our politicians to do something about.' He said: 'Tomorrow is our Eid festival. That's going to hit them (the boy's family) even harder. 'It should be a happy day. I'm really sad for the family. Their loss is going to be that much greater tomorrow.' Mr Khan said people used the road outside his business 'like a racetrack', and there were increasing problems with quad bikes and scooters. 'I have children in this area who go to school, who go to work, and other family members going to the local shops,' he said. 'It's quite distressing and disturbing to know this kind of thing is happening on a regular basis.' Mr Khan said it was a close-knit community, in which he had worked since 1978, but speeding motorists and gang problems had begun to blight the area in recent years. People began to lay flowers outside Mr Khan's business as the large police presence in the area dispersed on Thursday. Debris from the collision could still be seen in the road, at the junction between Staniforth Road and Barnardiston Road.
