Girlfriend of Raptors top pick steals the show at NBA Draft

Yahoo4 hours ago

A basketball star from South Carolina made a lot of new fans in Canada on Wednesday night at the NBA Draft – and it wasn't even the player that the Toronto Raptors selected.
While Collin Murray-Boyles made headlines of his own as the ninth-overall pick by the NBA's lone Canadian team, it was his girlfriend, Chloe Kitts, who had hoops fans going wild on social media.
Like Murray-Boyles, Kitts also is a college basketball star for the Gamecocks and helped the team win the NCAA championship in 2023.
After NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced Murray-Boyles as the Raptors' pick – and the 20-year-old appeared to utter an F-bomb, which he later explained – he began to hug family members seated at his table before eventually embracing his girlfriend.
Kitts, who stunned in an elegant, low-cut red dress, became an instant sensation online among those who were unaware of her own sizable social-media following.
'Canada, get ready to learn Chloe Kitts,' one user posted on X.
'Teaching the Raptors media room about Chloe Kitts as a WNBA prospect, love spreading the good word of wbb,' WNBA reporter Chelsea Leite wrote.
Kitts boasts more than 255,000 followers on Instagram, which is roughly 10 times more than boyfriend Murray-Boyles.
She has shared to her account many snaps from game action as well as fun times with friends and several visits to the beach.
On Thursday morning, Kitts posted a goofy photo from the night before in which she is sticking out her tongue while wearing a Raptors hat with the caption reading: 'Good morning' alongside a dinosaur emoji.
And Toronto hoops fans may have a chance to see even more of Kitts – and not just while cheering on her boyfriend during his rookie season this fall.
Kitts has just one year remaining of college eligibility before she can enter next year's WNBA draft. Perhaps fittingly, the Toronto Tempo expansion team will be entering the league next year and could have the chance to reunite the couple north of the border.
Kitts should be in demand in the draft, too.
The 6-foot-7 forward has been a key contributor to a Gamecocks team that has become a powerhouse in women's college ball. She earned second-team All-SEC honors in his sophomore year after making the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2023.
Murray-Boyles was beyond complimentary of Kitts and the impact she has had on him.
'She's amazing for me. She knows the sacrifices that this comes with being a basketball player, especially professional basketball player. So she understands that, and she fully embraces it. She never takes anything for granted, never takes my time for granted,' he said during a post-draft conference press from New York.
'I never take her for granted, as well. Enjoying each other's company as much as possible. She's been really good for me.'
The newest Raptor also praised the on-court ability Kitts and the South Carolina's women's team.
'How they play is something that I like to watch. How fast they go is almost relatable to how fast the NBA goes and how fast paced it is,' he said. 'I watch (coach) Dawn Staley a lot and see what she does, and that will be what it is for me at the next level.'
Collin Murray-Boyles 'thankful' after Raptors take him with 9th pick in NBA Draft
Toronto Raptors will have plenty of options with ninth pick in NBA draft
As for Murray-Boyles, he was quick to clear up any misconception about his reaction to being drafted by the Raptors.
During the broadcast of the draft, he appeared to mouth an expletive and shook his head in a scene that reminded some long-time Canadian basketball fans of the obvious displeasure star guard Steve Francis showed years ago when taken by the Vancouver Grizzlies.
Murray-Boyles quickly clarified that he had a great workout with the Raptors and the reaction was simply shock.
'Just disbelief. Toronto is the first team that I worked out for,' Murray-Boyles said. 'What I said was not a bad thing. Just very thankful. That was a surreal moment. This organization has a good history.
'It was a crazy moment. Obviously thankful for the opportunity that they're giving me. And I'm taking it full on and ready to do whatever it takes and whatever they need me to do.'

Pierre LeBrun's Expected 'Sweet Spot' for Maple Leafs-John Tavares Agreement

Pierre LeBrun's Expected 'Sweet Spot' for Maple Leafs-John Tavares Agreement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Veteran forward John Tavares made it clear at season's end he wants to remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but one week from the opening of NHL free agency, no extension has been signed. Advertisement The veteran just completed the final season of the seven-year, $77 million contract he signed in 2018 and remains in daily discussions with Leafs general manager Brad Treliving and agent Pat Brisson. According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, while discussions are still ongoing on a daily basis, the sides have yet to reach an agreement on terms and compensation. 'I think both sides probably would have been surprised a month ago if you would have told them they still hadn't had an extension done one week away from July 1,' Pierre LeBrun said. 'But I will also say this: it's not like they've hit a wall in talks. The dialogue continues almost daily.' Tavares is reportedly not expected to chase the highest offer available on the open market. Advertisement Daily Faceoff projects Tavares to sign a three-year, $23.7 million contract this offseason with a cap hit of $7.9 million per season. Instead of getting there, it's believed that Tavares would be willing to take less than his true market value to stay in Toronto, where he lives year-round with his wife and children. Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares (91) has expressed interest in staying with the E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images 'I believe that if the Leafs put $20 million over four years in front of John Tavares, that he would sign it,' LeBrun said. 'Neither side is there quite yet, but I think that ends up being the sweet spot if this gets done here in the next seven days.' Comparable deals signed of late include Matt Duchene's four-year, $4.5 million AAV contract with the Dallas Stars and Brock Nelson's $7.5 million AAV deal over three years with the Colorado Avalanche. Advertisement LeBrun noted that Tavares, who outproduced Nelson last season, isn't seeking top dollar but still hopes for fair value before July 1, thus the delay in an agreement with Toronto one week from the start of free agency. Maple Leafs Linked to Pending Free Agent Forwards from Two Canadian Teams

Maple Leafs Linked to Pending Free Agent Forwards from Two Canadian Teams originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With uncertainty hanging over Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner's future with the franchise, NHL insiders Greg Wyshynski and Kristen Shilton of ESPN proposed a solution to fill Marner's vacated role if he ends up leaving. Advertisement According to the two insiders, the Maple Leafs could be eyeing veteran free-agent forwards such as the Ottawa Senators' Claude Giroux and the Vancouver Canucks' Pius Suter. The Leafs enter the offseason with over $25.7 million in cap space and two major question marks in Marner and fellow unrestricted free agent John Tavares. "Sam Bennett appears determined to stay in Florida. Toews and Matt Duchene have signed elsewhere," the report reads. "Beyond Tavares, the Leafs are looking at Mikael Granlund, Pius Suter, or perhaps Claude Giroux." Giroux, 37 and a seven-time All-Star with 1,116 career points, is coming off a 50-point season and remains in contract talks with the Senators. Advertisement According to the Ottawa Citizen, there's mutual interest between player and team in a reunion this offseason. Shilton and Wyshynski also pointed to Suter as a fit for Toronto's third-line center role. The 29-year-old is coming off a career-high 46 points with Vancouver and is expected to earn a salary raise. View of a Toronto Maple Leafs has to make a decision about John Tavare and Mitch Kirouac-Imagn Images According to NHL insider Rick Dhaliwal, the Canucks might be open to bring the forward back to Vancouver next season. "I believe the Canucks have reconnected with Pius Suter's camp in the last 24 hours," Dhaliwal said. "I believe contract talks are back on." Daily Faceoff projects Suter to sign a four-year, $20 million contract this offseason, and the outlet has Giroux signing a two-year, $10.4 million contract. The Lakers are moving up in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft

Historically, second-round draft picks in the NBA don't amount to much. Sometimes, they can yield a rotation player, but that tends to be the exception rather than the rule. But over the past several years, the Los Angeles Lakers have found some diamonds in the rough in the second round. Players such as Ivica Zubac and Max Christie have panned out and become quite useful players in time. Advertisement The Lakers were going to have the No. 55 pick in the second round of this year's draft, which is taking place on Thursday. But they reportedly agreed to send that pick and some cash to the Chicago Bulls in order to acquire the No. 45 pick. According to the Los Angeles Times' Brad Turner, the team gave up $2.5 million to acquire the No. 45 pick. Unfortunately, that means it will be hard-capped at the second apron, at least for now. On draft day 2022, the Lakers executed a trade to acquire a second-round pick that became Christie, and three years earlier, they traded for Talen Horton-Tucker, who had been taken by the Orlando Magic in the second round, on draft day. They will be hoping to find another hidden gem this time around. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: The Lakers are moving up in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft
