Dimapur: In an effort to keep the Doyang dam reservoir in Wokha district pollution free and promote a healthier environment, the Doyang Land Owners Union, in collaboration with North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd, took up a cleanliness drive at Doyang reservoir, removing a large quantity of plastic waste, floating waste, and logs.
Neighbouring villages of the Doyang Hydro Electric Project (DHEP) and other bodies such as UBC Doyang, St Thomas Catholic church, Lotha Hoho Doyang, Esanphen village, Thillong village, Wondang village, and other concerned public, besides state police and central forces personnel, also took part in the initiative on Saturday.
The DHEP, located in the Doyang river, is the only major river dam in Nagaland.
John Zeliang, executive director and head of plant Doyang, who was present at the site, expressed his happiness that the Land Owners Union, churches and the public took the initiative to clean up the dam area.
"We cannot solve the environmental issue by money or technology alone. It requires the will of the people and participation of every individual," he said.
Stating that Doyang river gets a lot of floating debris coming from the catchment areas, he stressed that cleaning up Doyang reservoir alone will not work. "We have to do lifestyle changes in catchment areas to keep our areas, land, gardens and everything clean, especially those wastes which do not biodegrade," Zeliang added.

Doyang Land Owners Union president Roland Ezung appealed to the Nagaland govt to pay special attention for the sustenance of the DHEP, saying this is the only biggest and functional hydro electric project in the state.
On Aug 11, Wokha DC Vineet Kumar also announced to take up the second phase of Clean Doyang Mission. On June 7, 2024, the six-day first Clean Doyang Mission was initiated.

No change in budget for shoes for schoolkids

Mangaluru: Every academic year, govt distributes free shoes and socks to students in primary and secondary schools across the state, and over the years, the budget hasn't been revised. Parents and teachers have raised concerns about their quality as School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMCs) have to operate within the budget. In Karnataka, shoes and socks are supplied to nearly 40 lakh students. This year, Rs 111 crore was earmarked for this initiative. SDMCs are responsible for procuring these items, allocating a budget of Rs 265 per set for grades 1 to 5; Rs 295 for grades 6 to 8; and Rs 325 for grades 9 to 10. In coastal, Malnad, and some north Karnataka districts, chappals have been supplied instead of shoes due to monsoon that last for four months. The education dept has launched this programme in 2015-16 to encourage regular attendance and reduce dropout rates among students. "Over the years, the budget allocation for the purchase of the footwear has remained the same, but the price of the footwear has risen. We are trying our best to supply the best-quality footwear to our children after taking quotations from many vendors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Willenhall This Is the Most Affordable Private Medical Insurance Private Medical Plans Get Quote Undo Also, they are given after Sept when there is a decrease in rainfall," said an SDMC president. A schoolteacher also added that the footwear given to children does not last more than six months. A vendor said there are many conditions for procuring them, and one of them is the ISI mark. "When the SDMC is unable to procure the materials as per the budget allocation, they go for low-quality ones. As a result, the footwear provided to children becomes unusable after a few months. I try my best to supply material at the price and provide only ISI certified ones. We have sold goods to schools with no profit or at times incurring loss," the vendor shared. Mohidduin Kutty, president of SDMC coordination committee, said they ask for a minimum warranty of six months from the vendors for the material supplied. "Footwear supplied must be used only with the uniform. However, we have noticed that children use it during playtime as well, which cuts down its life," said Kutty. V Rashmi Mahesh, principal secretary to govt, department of school education and literacy, was unavailable for comments. Preparations begin for national tiger estimation in UP

Pilibhit: Preparations for the four-yearly national tiger estimation have begun in Uttar Pradesh. The exercise, conducted by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) every four years, is scheduled for 2026. According to H Rajamohan, the field director of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, the first meeting of field directors, divisional forest officers, and other senior officials will be held at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) on August 22 to discuss strategies for the survey. The country is divided into five landscapes for the estimation — Shivalik Hills & Gangetic Plains, Central India Highlands & Eastern Ghats, Western Ghats, North Eastern Hills & Brahmaputra Plains, and Sundarbans — covering 53 tiger reserves across 75,796 sq km. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand fall under the Shivalik Hills & Gangetic Plains landscape. In the last estimation (2022), India reported 3,682 tigers — an increase of 715 from 2018. Madhya Pradesh led with 785 tigers, followed by Karnataka with 563 and Uttarakhand with 560. Uttar Pradesh recorded 205 tigers. A MoEFCC report released in July 2023 highlighted Corbett Tiger Reserve as having the highest count at 260 tigers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Dudhwa Tiger Reserve reported 135 (up from 107 in 2018), while Pilibhit Tiger Reserve increased from 65 in 2018 to 71 in 2022. Rajamohan said training for forest officials from UP, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan will be held at Pilibhit Tiger Reserve from September 1 to 3. The sessions will explain all four phases of the estimation process and include field training on laying transect lines and collecting tiger signs such as scat, scratch marks, and pugmarks. The estimation at Dudhwa Tiger Reserve will cover 2,200 sq km, including Katarniaghat and Kishanpur wildlife sanctuaries, Dudhwa National Park, North and South Kheri forest divisions, and Shahjahanpur forest division. Phase III will require over 2,000 infrared camera traps and thousands of spare batteries to ensure uninterrupted functioning, Rajamohan added. Pilibhit Tiger Reserve's 730 sq km area will also be covered. Divisional Forest Officer Manish Singh said the reserve will be divided into 316 grids of 2x2 km each, with 114 transect lines laid to survey vegetation, herbivore species, and tiger signs.
