Green Mountain State Forest camping opens this weekend
MENDON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – Vermont's only national forest welcomes campers starting this Friday and into the long holiday weekend.
The Green Mountain National Forest announced that its many camp sites, which range from remote hike-in backcountry campgrounds to sites that are easily accessed by car, will be ready for the 2025 summer season starting May 23.
The weather forecast has temperatures at the popular Moosalamoo Campground in the upper 40s Friday and Saturday with likely rain showers, but things should warm up and clear out Sunday and especially Memorial Day.
Cool, cloudy weather continues Wednesday
Forest Service officials call special attention to the lack of potable water at Moosalamoo Campground, expected to last through the summer, and summer closures planned for the Texas Falls Observation Site and Picnic Area. Other construction projects will impact parking and facilities at different campgrounds, but prospective campers should consult the alerts page on the forest service website for up-to-date information.
The 408,419-acre Green Mountain State Forest was established in 1932 to try to protect some of Vermont's woodlands from logging, flooding, and wildfires. It is one of only two national forests in New England, with the other being the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire and Maine.

As expansion continues, summer drivers to see new looks at Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel
As the summer travel season picks up, visitors will have a much different view — and some different routes — at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel as a result of the ongoing expansion project. Traffic counts at the primary route between the Peninsula and South Hampton Roads have grown steadily ever since it opened in the 1950s. In 2011, for example, the state transportation department reported that on a daily basis, more than 44,000 vehicles used the artery each way, and projected that number to rise to about 56,000 by 2040. Last year, according to the department, roughly 100,000 vehicles used it daily during the tourism season, which begins on Memorial Day weekend. As the $4 billion project continues this summer, there will three primary traffic shifts that motorists will see, the two biggest of which will come in August. Early that month, motorists heading west on Interstate 64 between Willoughby Spit and the South Island and will be moved onto a temporary bridge to allow crews to demolish the existing bridge and continue construction of the new portion of the bridge, according to Ryan Banas, project director for the HRBT Expansion Project. In late August, eastbound I-64 traffic from the South Island to Willoughby Spit will be shifted onto the new eight-lane bridge which will allow for the demolition of portions of the existing eastbound structure and continue. However, only two of the future eight lanes will be open to traffic, Banas said. 'We'll only have two new lanes up there, it ultimately has the capacity for eight, but in our current staging of construction we're only going to have two new lanes up on that bridge,' Banas said. 'No additional capacity across the harbor until substantial completion, which for us is February 2027.' However, he added, opening this portion of the bridge to traffic will offer a great deal of shoulder width which will allow for easier management of incidents such as accidents and breakdowns — and therefore lessen congestion. 'By having those shoulders it allows us to get them out of an active lane and keep traffic moving through on the existing lanes that we have,' Banas said. 'I do think that will be very helpful for us in high volume situations where we don't have to worry about someone breaking down because they've been sitting in traffic because of congestion, and then that breakdown can just lead to even more exacerbated delays.' Starting around the end of this month, motorists on I-64 from Willoughby Spit down to Patrol Road will shift from the left edge of the eastbound roadway to the right edge, now only newly widened pavement, to allow crews to do more construction work in the median. As for the project's main feature, the new tunnels, the enormous tunnel drilling machine doing the bulk of the heavy lifting for the HRBT project, has completed 65% of the way through her second tunnel as of Friday. FAA caps flights at Newark Airport to cut delays through 2025
The Federal Aviation Administration finalized new air traffic restrictions at Newark Liberty International Airport, saying that arrivals and departures would be limited to 34 each per hour through Oct. 25, 2025. Arrivals and departures at EWR will be further reduced on weekends from Sept. 1 through the end of the year to accommodate airport construction. The FAA previously signaled it was planning to reduce traffic at Newark in response to weeks of delays caused by equipment outages and staffing issues that hampered the airport's capacity. "The confirmed reduced rates will maintain safety while alleviating excessive flight delays at the airport due to staffing and equipment challenges. The early completion of runway construction at the airport that added to the delays will also contribute to a more efficient operation," the FAA said in a statement. "Working with airlines and the airport, the limited arrival rate already paid dividends over the Memorial Day holiday with smooth travel into and out of Newark." United Airlines, which operates a major hub at Newark, touted the airport's on-time rate over the previous week. "Newark (EWR) is the most reliable airport in the New York City area this week," the airline said in a statement. United noted that 79% of its departures from Newark were on time between June 2 and June 5, while 88% of arrivals landed at Newark on time, and 90% of the airline's flights departing Newark arrived at their destinations on time. At a press conference announcing the early completion of a runway reconstruction project at the airport, alongside Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, United CEO Scott Kirby said that travelers in and out of Newark will be able to take advantage of great airfare deals this summer. "We did get well behind on bookings because of the perception issues around Newark recently, so that means more seats are available, which means the fares are better than they're probably going to ever be in the years to come, so now's the time to book your vacation if you want to go to Europe or you want to head across the country," he said.
