Stafford McDowall named to captain Scotland against the New Zealand Maori
McDowall played in all of Scotland's matches in the last Six Nations tournament in place of the injured Sione Tuipulotu.
Scrumhalf George Horne and backrower Josh Horne have been named as vice-captains. Horne is the most-capped player in the Scotland lineup with 35 caps.
McDowall will combine in midfield with Rory Hutchinson who was named in coach Gregor Townsend's squad in the absence of Matt Curry.
Fullback Ollie Smith will play his first match for Scotland since the 2023 World Cup. Backrower Alexander Masibaka and New Zealand-born flyhalf Fergus Burke have been named on the bench to make their first appearances for Scotland.
The match is not an official test.
Maori coach Ross Filipo has made a handful of changes to the side which beat a Japan XV 50-23 in Tokyo last weekend.
Crusaders lock Antonio Shalfoon will make his Maoris debut at lock while Chiefs center Daniel Rona joins the starting lineup at center. Blues back Corey Evans has been named on the bench.
Scotland will play Fiji in Suva on July 12.

Springboks dream comes true for Congolese refugee Tshituka
Democratic Republic of Congo-born Vincent Tshituka will make his Test debut for South Africa against Italy on Saturday. (Glyn KIRK) The remarkable rise of flanker Vincent Tshituka from a child refugee to the Springboks Test team will be completed on Saturday when he faces Italy in Pretoria. He fled to South Africa from the Democratic Republic of Congo with his family in 2002 to avoid politically-induced violence. Advertisement Later, while studying at the University of Johannesburg, he fell in love with rugby. It was an unusual choice given he came from a country where football is the dominant sport. Tshituka caught the eye of scouts from the Johannesburg-based Lions, one of the four major rugby franchises in South Africa, and quickly established himself in the matchday 23. In 2022 he moved to another of the 'big four', the Sharks in Durban, and became part of a Springbok-stacked pack. But to be eligible for the Springboks he had to become a South African citizen, which the 26-year-old achieved recently. He debuted for South Africa against the Barbarians last weekend and scored two tries in a 54-7 triumph. However, it was an exhibition match, so no caps were awarded. Advertisement But the clash with Italy is an official Test and no Springbok will be prouder than Tshituka when he runs on to the Loftus Versfeld pitch. "Playing for the Springboks in a Test is the greatest sporting honour available to me. I have dreamt for many years of wearing the green and gold," he told reporters. "Fleeing Congo was a traumatic experience, particularly for my wonderful parents. After arriving in South Africa, my father would go to rubbish dumps, find items of value, and sell them to feed us. "There was little money, but we survived because our parents displayed incredible love for their children. We owe them so much. But at university I made up for lost time and it is hard to describe exactly how I feel before facing the Italians. "The more difficult your background, the more you appreciate the opportunities life presents. Saturday is going to be an extraordinary special day for me and my family," he added. Tshituka is one of only three Springboks in the matchday 23 who were not part of the 2019 or 2023 Rugby World Cup-winning teams. The others are scrum-half Morne van den Berg and tighthead prop Wilco Louw as South Africa start a 13-Test schedule that ends in Wales in late November. 'Better again': Lions to step it up against Waratahs
Not content with two half-century scorelines, the British and Irish Lions are promising the NSW Waratahs no let-up. After piling on more than 50 points against both the Western Force and Queensland Reds, the rampant tourists tackle the Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday intent on shifting up yet another gear. With a huge squad of almost double the amount of players needed for the first Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane on July 19, the Lions hopefuls are hungry to impress coach Andy Farrell and push for a place in the match-day 23. "That's the ultimate goal, isn't it, for everyone here. They want to play in those Tests and the only way to do that is to play well in these in all these games leading up to it," said Irish lock Tadhg Beirne, who will captain the Lions at Allianz Stadium. "If you're not producing in these games, you're not giving yourself a fighting chance. "Everyone here wants to be in that 23 so everyone's going to put their best foot forward." That could spell trouble for the undermanned Waratahs, who are missing several Wallabies on duty for Sunday's season-opening international against Fiji in Newcastle. Bookmakers are giving the Tahs no hope, offering the hosts 40 points start in head-to-head betting. In a chilling warning to Dan McKellar's side, fellow Irish second-rower James Ryan says the Lions are out to improve on their eight-try victories over both the Force and Reds in the past week. "It's about just getting better again,' Ryan said on Friday. "We thought we took a step forward on Wednesday in terms of our performance, discipline and some of our defensive work was better against the Reds than maybe it was against the Force. "So we want to just push on the standard now again. You know the Tests are coming up in the next couple of weeks, so it's just about getting better tomorrow night. "That's the main thing." Captaining NSW in the absence of Wallabies star Jake Gordon, lock Hugh Sinclair says the Waratahs are embracing their big underdogs' tag. "We've been lucky that a lot of the (Waratahs) coaches and the players that we have have been involved in Test matches and they've spoken heavily throughout the week that it is a Test match," Sinclair said. "A lot of us haven't had those sort of weeks and those experiences, but we're treating it that way and we want to put in a performance. We don't want to get beaten by 50." "We've talked about the Olympics is every four years, but the Lions is every 12 years so many players don't get an opportunity to play against them, so we're extremely fortunate to be able to be in this position. "The boys are just excited." Win or lose, it will be the retiring Sinclair's last match for the Waratahs and says the honour ranks as the highlight of his career. "I actually played the curtain raiser in 2013 for Northern Suburbs at the old stadium so that was pretty cool. "To captain this state and to do it against the British and Irish Lions, it will be my greatest rugby memory for sure."
